Cacodemons couldn't wear pants even if they tried, they need their anus exposed in order to fart so that they can float. Why do you think cacos damage and block you despite being way below them? Those farts are so dense you can't move through them and damage you with intense stench.

So some of the heavy lifting for this was already done for me as I'm using these Doomslayer hands TypicalSF made. To make the custom hand I took a normal gloved Doomguy hand, grayscaled it, and then painted over it using the color shown here with Aseprite's color layer setting.

I've spent the past like half hour trying to do an exact replica of how I made the finger plates, but I haven't had much luck there. But what I essentially did was start with solid block colors, then doing basic shading to give it a rounded and shiny metal look, then I duplicated that layer and raised the dupe up and to the left of the original, fucking with the brightness and contrast to make the lower bits darker.

After that it was just blurring and blending shit to give it a shiny brushed metal look, then I pushed it through a limited color palette to help bring back some of that sharpness. Aseprite has a feature where you can force dithering on a whole image when you make it use a limited color palette.
I'm not a particularly good teacher, hopefully you can make use of this knowledge somehow.

As for the TypicalSF hands, I took this sheet here, and removed the hands I didn't need. After that, I grayscaled all of the armor bits to make it easier to work with, on this step I also added some other details like scratches, panels, extra rivets, and tried to give a leathery look to some parts of the gloves under the plating. Along with this I also adjusted the contrast on some parts of the gauntlets to make them pop out more. Finally I used the color layer effect on Aseprite again to paint over the hands.

playing Doom via GZDoom. turned off crouching, free aim and jump, no texture filtering either
difficulty is Hey, Not Too Rough. I wasn't sure which mode was normal, but I haven't died yet and I'm on E1M8: Phobos Anomaly, so maybe it's easy mode
got lost a few times so my times are probably shit, but it's still good fun. not sure if the automap thing is vanilla, where you can navigate just with the map open
either way it's a lot more enjoyable than Doom 64 so far, which is what I started with. the puzzles and keyhunting is nowhere near as bad. very rewarding to find secrets in this too

Played Quake 2 remaster that I picked up for a few bucks on Black Friday week. Despite being a linear game there's quite a few alternate paths that I can't tell if I made the wrong choice at first. Maybe I'm turtling but each level took me at least 30 minutes for better or worse. My only gripe so far is I couldn't get VRR working so maybe Kex engine fucked something up.

That's basically Easy, with "I'm Too Young To Die" being very easy (less damage taken, and more ammo from pickups).
Hurt Me Plenty is like Normal/Medium, with Ultra-Violence being Hard.
Nightmare is like like Bullshit Hard, because it was more added as a joke than as a serious difficulty (though if you're real good and can adapt to its various changes, it can be played).

You missed my point entirely by equating me to "good hope they starve to death now" anon. I was just pointing out the flaw in his logic where he cried about voice actors being egoistic and greedy because they wanna be paid for it. If they're so terrible, just go and find actors who would be willing to offer their locals for free or acceptable prize instead of further cementing the popularity of those who he deems "egoistic". While that approach could damage their income and character, at the end of a day it won't eraze any potential narcissism because, for example, their thought will go like "I'm ripped off because I'm great and popular".
>How is it a "terrible slippery slope", anyway!?
What I meant is how normalizing ripping off certain voice actors due to their controversial character or something like that. This leads a door open for further invasive tactics from modders and developers/publishers alike that will be fully opened eventually. It would be just a matter of time before it happens to "your boy/girl". Even if we fixate on "controversy" angle, nothing stops you to cancel someone to get a "free voice" card. One of the reasons why recent actor & writer strikes in Hollywood happened were because of AI and (in case of actors) losing control of their voice and appearance.
The thing about voice actor (and regular ones) and AI is how problematic mix of the two can get. Someone can just decide to take someone's voice without permission to utilize it in some porno mod without their consent... In fact, it's already happening and I know how pointless it is to have this type of argument on 4Chan of all places as I'll be called moralfag with this point completely dismissed because I'm "simping for voice actors".

every single quake map you've ever downloaded violates somebody's copyrights with their textures. most doom wads violate some music rights somewhere. unofficial patches crack copy protection and provide illegal downloads for soundtracks. modding in real weapons / cars / trademarks is an offense, and uncensoring red crosses is a war crime.
considering all of that, getting pissy about imitation VA is retarded. it's different with big corpos profiting from the "likeness", especially after an actor's death. but modding is free game. if you disagree, you're just a useful idiot bringing about everything-as-a-service.

I've been trying out Unreal Tournament 1999 with the Xvehicles mod recently and am loving it. The mod especially makes the game feel a lot like Command and Conquer Renegade - just glorious chaos with assholes rolling around in OP tanks and airstrikes from helicopters and Halo banshee rip-offs. Yeah, I'm having a great time even if it's impossible for anyone to score. The mod even comes with a few random levels like the one fun Halo multiplayer map "Blood Gulch". If you go through the effort of making a TC. If you replace everything but the engine, it's not a mod at that point. It's a new game.

Why shouldn't you charge for it? So long as you're not charging a ridiculous amount and you offer a shareware style free episode or something. I think it's great that modders now have a way to monetise their talents.

I mean, plenty of people have made games using the source engine and sold it, what's the difference?

As someone who is now spending 5+ years on a single project alone ( Golden Souls 3) and more than a decade on an entire trilogy + Simon's Destiny, GZPT and whatever else didn't not stick the landing for me and got cancelled, I really don't blame people for not wanting to do full TC projects.

Making a 32-level megawad is a LOT of work, making a gameplay mod is a LOT of work, even just making new textures or sprites for the characters (be frankensprited or completely new) is also a LOT of work.

Take these three elements together, that's how you make a TC, understand how hard it is, even if you have a team working with you, coordination is something to take into account, the fact that as a hobby people might not always be up for working on this kinda stuff everyday, things slow down etc.

Sure the HL community has a lot of big projects, but for 2 projects released, there's one hundred big projects started through the years that got cancelled or abandoned over the gargantuan amount of work and dedication they required.

It also makes sense that most of the big Doom projects are basically commercial games, we're going into the next age of Doom "modding" where Gzdoom (or even better, VKDoom ) are fully realized engines that, despite their quirks, can let you make a game from scratch with the right knowledge, it's no wonder that, if someone wants to make something big, they'll probably think of making an actual, commercially viable game rather than just a simple mod.

As for me, I still enjoy doing TCs, but after GS3 i'm either gonna join the commercial game crowd or stop making big projects altogether, for the same reasons i've explained before, it's a lot of work to make a TC and it takes a lot of time, patience, dedication and that has to go on for a long time, maybe possibly even a decade on working on the same thing.

GS3 will be my swan song and i will make sure it will be a good one.

Shareware episodes are always the most polished. They are there to sell the game after all.

That being said I absolutely loved the shit out of all 4 episodes when I played them as a kid. People often forget that the original episodes were made on 1993 (and 1995), and they were more than great back then. Doom 2's city maps were cool, Master Levels was a great expansion and Evilution was amazing wad. Now we've been spoiled with so much high quality wads that original content seems bleak in comparison.

So basically I like half life one, and I quite like quake but don't really play it. However I am looking for some comfy Christmas maps or mods for both. Would love to play some for that comfy Christmas vibe. Even some comfy 1.6 xmas_ maps but they are hard to find on live servers. Anyway lads I would love some help and recommendations. I can't play custom maps on quake because I am too retard but I hope to try again. Beat thing would be some half life one SP mods/maps that are festive.

Serious question.
Why does DOOM feel more "adrenalinic" than QUAKE?
Is it because in Doom is 1 vs many, while in Quake a lot of the enemies can be considered bullet sponges, effectively? Is it because the weapons in Quake don't feel as good as in Doom? (Shotguns can't really be compared at all.)
I always find myself going back to Doom, but I would love more options, a mix between the two games (I believe sprites are also one of the reasons) would be godlike.
What do you think?
I enjoy both games, don't get me wrong, but Doom has SOMETHING that Quake doesn't, and I can't quite put my finger on what that is

Having cannon fodder that folds like paper along with stronger, slower shotguns is definitely part of it. I'd also throw in:

-Sprite-based enemies can be packed tightly together instead of worrying about 3D collision boxes, allowing for more enemies in a space
-Sectors allowing for larger, performance-friendly areas compared to brushes, and works with the above reason
-Faster movement on average allowing for quick traversal of these areas, effortlessly augmented by straferunning on the fly so the player can weave around for whatever reason. Compare this to bhopping and rocket jumping, which either requires buildup or gives so much immediate speed that it's more used for escaping and speedrunning
-More diverse range of health pools, so the player has dramatic fights where fodder gets mowed down quickly with the elites still standing and fighting back

I don't think Quake's idea of having fewer enemies is inherently bad, but the enemies don't really play into it that well. And when I see level makers try doing bigger battles or slaughtermaps, it's usually giving the player a quad and having them spray nails at a group of baddies who are more busy bumping into each other.

I’m working on a megawad as well right now.

My process is:
>sketch out the maps on grid paper (pick out music simultaneously)
>Make in Doom Builder
>Apply custom textures where needed (this is gonna be alot for my project)
-Playtest and release

I can make a complete map sketch in about 5 hours. (Maps should only be about 10 mins on average to complete)

Texture art, I have no how long that will take.

Playtesting is going to have to be concurrent with map building. I’m very reluctant to rely on community playtesters.

This is all made worse by how I want there to be a legit narrative focus on my megawad (while still being mostly vanilla).

Its going to take about a year before I think I can present a beta version.

The work is fucking immense when you pile it on top of real life considerations. But this fucking game caught my soul, so its gonna be worth it.

Quake had to be more "hardware considerate" when Doom 2 was more of the opposite: Any "doom is hard to run" concerns were met with larger maps and enemy counts in the sequel.
Custom Quake mods/maps can overcome this "small and beefy roster" issue but at that point it's fair to compare it to Doom with modern mods. Much of what it arguably "has over Doom" (weapon balancing, switch speed, full aim shooting, movement mechanics) can be emulated and improved.

Doom wins for me but Quake isn't far behind. For what it's worth I find that Doom and both Quakes are better with their enemy and weapon rosters than the Build games, and I like all those too.

There's a cool cast in Duke Nukem 3D but I still find it the easiest build game. I also don't enjoy the spider mastermind much and battlelords feel like a worse version of them.
Blood, though my favorite, places all emphasis of difficulty on the hitscanny cultists. The expansions improve upon this by adding enemies that throw dynamite and enemies that shoot tesla, but these are also cultists.
Shadow Warrior has an enemy roster that feels the most varied in gameplay, most challenging, but like Blood most of it comes from a bunch of ninjas in different pants colors. The most dangerous (the shadow ninja) shows why it's a great idea that something as damaging as the cyberdemon is as big as it is and makes an aggro sound that's audible anywhere in the map.

Weapons are generally faster and punchier, and you can choose between three different starting weapons:
>Pistol: Shoots slow, hits hard
>SMG: Shoots fast and is generally a balanced choice
>Plasma SMG: Self recharging rapid fire energy gun, good for whipping out, spamming it, and then switching to another weapon

I can't really do any kind of modding for GoldSrc, but I gathered a few sound effects (mainly a few old Mel Blanc soundbytes, and some stock sounds I stole from a commercial stock sound website without paying). I tried to match the GLUGLUGLUG noise to the length of the HEV charger's sound, it's maybe a little exaggerated sounding, but considering that you'd be literally putting your mouth to the tap and then draining an entire beer keg in a matter of seconds, it feels fitting.

https://files.catbox.moe/kfjxue.zip
Maybe someone knows how to apply them.

This is mainly it IMO, Doom 2 used a lot more brown and tan textures in its levels than the first game did, which together with two sky textures which are pretty brown themselves, makes for a bit of visual monotony. This gets somewhat better with the hell levels, but there's quite a lot of brown and tan still.

I think just replacing the sky textures and then maybe swapping out some textures in some levels would do quite a lot for the feel of the game.

It does. Also, learn how to dynamite, it's very important that you do, especially for Well Done if you feel like giving it a shot again. Another thing that may help is making the most out of Invisibility and Shot Reflection powerups whenever you encounter them. Best of luck with trying to beat the game, anon. Ammo is scarce especially in E1 so I wouldn't fire both barrels at once unless I'm practically hugging the enemy and can get a full meatshot. Zombies which also have an audio cue for dying as opposed to just being downed (they make a much louder AAAAAAAUGH sound). Crouching and aiming upwards at them helps to keep the spread as tight as possible I find
Aim a little lower when you're throwing dynamite, using your video as reference you aimed between the clock and the cultists to throw your first one while I feel that looking right at them as you come up the stairs looks like it'd make up for the slight upwards angle it has as it leaves your hands
Just being nitpicky though, Blood is very fun when you tactically slice through cultists but there are a lot of encounters on Well Done which can feel pretty unfair without prior knowledge (despite what a certain content creator thinks that w.r.t. Blood & SW enemies) so I'd stick to LB for at least the first episode

Look at how smooth the cancelled reload you showed there is, with the same movement he shoves the shells in, he cocks the hammers. That's a trained movement, fast and smooth. It's cool and it's practical.
The other animation has him removing his dominant hand from the trigger in order to meat hand the hammers.

Been adding some extra details like spawning casings and shit for Doomslayer's guns so far. Also got the fear effect in, I'm not sure if I want to make it have a greater radius or not.
Also need to figure out how to best go about animation cancelling here. I might make it so you can cancel it, but you'll need to finish the reload when you come back to it. I know a common technique with Doomslayer in the past was to hold M1 and tap 3 to switch between the shotguns and tear shit up, but I'm not sure if I want to bring that back.

It doesn’t work like that. If anything load the original campaign through one of the expansions for improved AI.
If that’s too hard to figure out, then just play the game through the new port. If you go that route, you might want to find a mod that “uncensors” the red crosses.

What is the reason to hate Nightdive outside the meme contrarianism? They have made 10 great soulful remasters instead cheap cash grabs that give zero reasons to play originals outside of some mod compabilities. The only real fuck ups are Blood, Quake and Blade Runner. Blood because of Atari being a bunch of fags, Blade Runner because of tangled up source code (the whole project was a mistake) and Quake 1 for movement inconsistencies (the game howerer got some cool stuff too like the new expansion, models and light system, so I'm it glad exists). I have to say that I don't know about quality of Noctropolis or Forsaken, because I've never played them.

Nightdive is not perfect, but at least they seem to have some quality control and love for games that they remaster. There are lot of worse companies and worse ways to remaster a game. Kingpin Reloaded is good example of horrible "remaster". Even Nightdive's bad remasters are not that bad.

>Shadow Man
Ignoring the fact there (probably) is not even a working source port for this, the remaster adds so many QoL improvements, that it's almost a new much better game, and shitload of cut content including many weapons, monsters and few levels.
>Turok Trilogy
Good graphic improvements like ability to turn off the fog. And I see no reason why anyone would prefer to play Turok 3 on n64 emulator with all n64 restrictions like instantly disappearing corpses.
>Doom 64
Same reason as with Turok 3. Also extra maps on top of that.
>RotT
Original didn't have even have a bug free source port. It has huge amount of QoL improvements and content.

I agree with you on the lightning. On Q1 it was fine, but Q2 had too much bloom. This and the railgun nerf were only negative things for me on Q2R, but railgun nerf came from Bethesda's side. But tasteful enchanced models, ai improvements, co-op improvements, ground zero nerfs and added cut content like distruptor, and addition of n64 campaign won me over. I also really enjoyed the new expansion, but thanks from that go to Machine Games.

Yes the turret thing is kind of subjective option. For me, the existence of the original turrets destroyed the gz experience for me. The gameplay became slower, more dependant on saving and less arcadey because of stealth turrets that killed you before you were able to spot them. They had high hp, and yet they were numerous which meant that majority of combat was against this very unfun enemy. Giving them laser pointers to remove their stealthiness and nerfing them so that you kill them with one railgun or rocket instead of 3, made them less frustrating for me.

I don't know is there any mod that reverts the gz changes, but there at least were not any mods that nerfed the turrets.
