/vr/, let's talk about 8-bit Konami and how fucking awesome they were. Famicom, NES and MSX, it's all good. I don't think any company had as such an amazing record during a gen as Konami did through the 80's. I've even considered investing in an MSX2 just for Konami's output on it. And Wai Wai World 2 on the Famicom is an amazing 2-player game.

This game was my first encounter with the Konami code. I managed to type it in entirely by accident.
And I still didn't beat the game. Made it to what I have later learned to be the last boss though.

This game should get more love. People who don't know any better praise Contra as one of the hardest titles on the NES, when it's not even the hardest Konami game on the NES.

Coincidentally, I just downloaded Slamander (Famicom) to mess around with. Hopefully it's like Gradius I & II

The Gradius / Nemesis / Salamander / Life Force series is one of the most confusing series in terms of what games are official series releases or not, Like Salamander is considered its own series even though the main vehicle in both games is the Vic Viper and they use the same gameplay style and power-up system. The only thing that really separates them is that Salamander / Life Force has alternating top down levels.

Gradius and Salamander aren't 8 bit.

On the NES and MSX they are.

Is there a particular reason to play those versions instead of the arcade or X86000 ones?

What does it matter? They were released on 8-bit platforms, and Gradius 2 on the MSX is a completely different game then the arcade one. If you don't think there can't be discussion about a series on a particular platform just because there's a "superior" version on another platform, then I can direct you over here>>> /v/

Maybe you should have just answered his question rather than getting offended over nothing.

Was Jackal from Konami? It felt like the kind of ass-reaming Konami games used to give out on a regular basis.

A buddy of mine and I played it and the boss had the gall to pull a
>THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!
on us and obliterated our asses. Never did beat it by myself.

Also jesus fucking christ it took me years to beat Castlevania.

Salamander 1&2 arcade don't use Gradius powerups, they have pickups

The nes/fc version has its own levels, msx as well in addition to being balls-to-the-wall difficult

I think it's silly to restrict the discussion to 8 bit platforms, particularly if they aren't even the original.

Yes.

That's a good game, too. Surprisingly good and I always wondered why it never saw more games.

I grew up with a famiclon in the early 90s, I have my fondest memories with Konami classics like TwinBee and Circus Charlie

I set a collecting goal to own every konami game made for the NES and famicom, including FDS. It turned out to be about 80 games and cost me a small fortune. Konami truly was the king of the NES.

my first experience with cheat codes ever was in the arcade, on a nintendo playchoice 10. gradius literally tells you the cheat code on the upper monitor.

It didn't really matter to the operator if you cheated on a timer-based game so they probably figured people would find it more fun.

I love this fucking game. It took me forever to beat but it was never a chore.
