When did Nintendo establish a consistent color scheme for Mario?

Today he wears blue overalls, a red shirt underneath, and a red cap.

Back in the 80s, it seems like anything goes.

This is the modern color scheme.

What was the first game to use this and when did it become the standard?

>> No.10471343

The characters have been pretty consistent since Kotabe first drew them (1986).

1988, the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 3 basically established the blue overalls and red undershirt. In the US/ NA, Mario retained his red overalls until about 1990. Super Mari Land box art and Mario 3 box art were the first times Mario was seen with blue overalls.

Whoops, 1989, was the first time Mario had this colour scheme in the western box art with Super Mario Land.

Super Mario Bros 2 US box art from 1988. Even though Mario's sprite actually has blue overalls in the game. But this was localized during the development of Super Mario Bros 3 in Japan. The US marketing still went with the red overalls.

I dunno, Mario was pretty consistent throughout the SNES era.

I think Anon is referring to "Perfect Mario", which is basically the exact precise shape of Mario and his head in particular that's still used today. SM64 was a big step towards that exact look, especially in the promotional renders

Oh sure, I get what you are saying. Yeah, from the Mario 64 renders onwards, his design has been basically unchanged.

If you've ever played Overcooked! a plumbing game like that where Mario and Luigi have to go around a house maintaining the plumbing could be pretty fun. Add in Bowser and Wario deliberately sabotaging it by clogging toilets like assholes and it'd be a great party game.
