It's the best console.

>free DVD player included in an era when they cost almost as much as a PS2 ensuring wide adoption of both the format and console
>excellent library
>great graphics, 2D and 3D
>plays all PS1 games and speeds up CD access times and even improves graphics depending on the game
>received ports or emulations or remasters of practically every memorable classic 16-bit era rpg

There's no contest, it won.

They made like 120 million of these things, they'll be finding lnib lasers in 3000 years. At this point almost everybody using one probably has a hard drive or SSD or gets their games from their home server etc. anyway.

Oni was an experimental game that was drastically cut back because Bungie needed all hands on deck for Halo. What we got really only had the bare minimum of a complete game, the core gameplay works and the enemies work but everything related to the levels and presentation were clearly missing months of polish. Also the multiplayer just got cut completely along with tons of other stuff.

Fat PS2 has more points of failure and a lot more moving parts. PS2 slim is one of the best console refreshes in history. It runs much cooler, has a faster ethernet port (12.5mbps speeds), is completely silent, has no fans (which can fail), no mechanical cd drive (which can fail), and an external PSU (easily replaceable). Early PS2s did have a significant failure rate, mine died in 2003.

Nothing wrong with the PS2 fat and I think it's still aesthetically superior, but this is loser nostalgia whining to say it is superior in any way mechanically to a slim.

The boards are solid, I've never had one with a bad PSU either though I hear certain lots with certain PSUs can be a problem. All CD drives will fail sooner or later unless they're built like a tank, and the only console with a proper optical drive built for longevity are certain models of the CDi.

Everything else, without any exceptions whatsoever, used a flimsy plastic thin light mechanism where the only actual metal is perhaps a bit of rail for the optical sled, and the central spindle.

Only the high-end CDi's of all consoles will endure forever. They use the famous and indestructible, solid brass and steel, magnetic levitation Philips CDM mechanisms.

*EVERY* other optical-based console will wear out. And this extends to computer drives, home players, etc. too.

Pic related is a typical construction for any home console's optical drive. Some even omit the sheet metal chassis and opt for plastic throughout. Either way they've got nylon riding on steel and other nylon contacting less durable plastic gears. Complaining about this issue and saying it's particular to this or that console is henpecking at this point, and the PS2 never suffered any mass waves of RROD like SOME console makers. They're just toys that are wearing out.

No they weren't, it was the same mechanism as the first-gen mass market Sony DVD drives. Only a few manufacturers made DVD mechanisms, everybody else purchased theirs from one of the handful of mechanism makers and put them in their own products. To this day there is only one Blu-Ray mechanism manufacturer left, Samsung. Sony already stopped, they have enough warehoused for forever. Samsung halts production next year. Recently a company cloned the Philips CDM-1, but the bare mechanism is $1800. It's meant for high end CD players.
