That's dumb. There's 100 of them, for starters, and because the list is 10 per year there's a lot of "okay... for 1994" in there. I don't know why people like to make those huge list recommendations but it's not like anyone is going to go through and play all of them.

A better approach is to try to figure out what style someone likes (super detailed, old school, slaughterfest, on the easy side, atmospheric, hellish, etc.) and go from there. Or just stick with the standards like Scythe and AV.

AV is considered classic and although people here will argue over whether it still deserves its reputation, it's a fine collection of 32 maps.

It's also a good demo because 1) it's got a variety of mapping styles, so you can say "I want more like that castle map" or "more like that hell map", 2) the later maps show how bonkers the difficulty can get with custom maps in the Doom community, and 3) it doesn't rely on fancy sourceport effects.

If 3) is your thing, though, and you want to see all the fancy doo-das that GZDoom can do, play the Ultimate Torment and Torture.

Actually screw that, play Thunderpeak, it's a better example of insane detailing/custom effects and gets right to the point. UTNT can drag on a bit and doesn't really get crazy until the later maps.

Ok everyone, i got the top 100 WADS downloaded now. I cannot seem to get any of them to show up in my zdoom when it runs the list pop up that all my doom 1 2 plutonia evilution hexen and all that from that pack. Any suggestions?

>> No.1047375

>>1047363
The pop up list is only for IWADs, which are things like "Doom2.wad" that contain the base resources for the game.

There are multiple ways of playing a PWAD but the easiest is probably to drag the PWAD onto ZDoom.exe, then select the IWAD that it was designed to run with (most PWADs run with Doom 2).

For me, it's not so much the download size with megawads like this as it is the number of maps and the time investment. I mean, I guess you can noclip through a map to see if it's interesting before you play it, but there are still 32, and you never know if it's going to turn into a boring switchfest or arena battle halfway and just drag on.

I usually wait for some reviews to pick out certain maps as must-sees.

A dude from the Duke4.net forums posted what happens to be a Doom-clone made by a taiwanese company, it's called MARS 3D

It borrows some stuff from Doom, Duke Nukem and whatever the fuck else. Here's some gameplay

The game can be downloaded here

http://pastebin.com/M0nxuWbF

It's 39MB, it has a 490MB zipped .ISO image and it needs to be mounted to make the game work or some shit like that; naturally, I've been trying for the past two hours to get the resources, but no dice.

oh well it was a great 36 minutes of careful exploration. i got two secrets, a partial invis by the red door and a soulsphere i didn't need in the sewer system. i think i missed an early plasma gun though as the map was otherwise giving me a lot of ammunition for a gun i didn't have...

If you had to rank all of the Doom II monsters by their killing priority (i.e., how big a threat they are, and how much you should focus on dispatching them compared to other monsters), what would your list look like? Obviously things like location, cover, how many of a certain type of monster are around, etc. should factor in, but generally I think I'd rank it as so:

Cyberdemon
Arch-vile
Spider Mastermind
Revenant
Pain Elemental
Baron of Hell
Mancubus
Hell Knight
Chaingunner
Cacodemon
Lost Soul
Shotgun Guy
Imp
Zombieman

>how big a threat they are, and how much you should focus on dispatching them compared to other monsters

Eh, these are often two completely different metrics. Cyberdemons are definitely near the top for "threat to me" but I almost never give them top priority as a target. They take longer to kill and they can kill a LOT of other monsters if I can start infighting.

One of the reasons Doom is still fun to play is because the interplay of the monsters and the setups the mapper create can drastically change the threat/priority rankings.

But, as a general rule for what to kill first, for me it's something like:

Arch-Vile
.
.
Pain Elemental
Revenant
Mancubus
Chaingunner
Sargeant

Everything else is more or less equal or on a case-by-case basis. Barons marching in can be the worst in tight spaces, stray lost souls can be a surprisingly huge pain in open areas, etc. etc.

Anon working on >>1047079 here.

So I have finally decided I'll be doing 3 huge-ass maps.
The one I'm working on at the moment is called Adramelech. It'll feature mostly Chaingunners/Revenants/Mancubi/Cacodemons/Imps and some Cyberdemons (I already have an idea how the final showdown will play). These maps will be designed to be pretty long to complete.

The second one is called Belial. It'll take place in some sort of meat processing plant; a huge factory with flesh everywhere, huge machines and pools of blood. This one will rely more on hitscanners, probably with hordes of shotgun dudes/chaingunners. It will also use Hell Knights/Barons, Arachnotrons and probably several Spiderdemons.

The last one is called Legion and will take place in an entirely different place, some sort of brown castle with wooden walkways over a black void. It'll also feature fleshy bits and will rely more on classic, non-cybernetic demons. There will be no former human enemies in this one and it will also feature the monster I hate the most; the Arch-Vile.

first of all, you didn't answer the question.

secondly, it's not looking with the mouse, it's turning with the mouse. when you move the mouse your whole body turns, you're not just looking left and right.

see i can play the insufferable pedant game too, it's no fun for anyone.

i claim that the only people using mouselook to mean turning are pedants and people looking for arguments on anonymous image boards. i claim further that the vast majority of doom players who use the term mouselook use it to mean looking up and down, something the original game didn't have. there is no need for a term other than "using the mouse" for something the game had from day one.

>> No.1049575

Mouselook means holding down a button to look up and down with the mouse. Freelook is being able to look up and down without touching any buttons or keys. Because freelook is the default nowadays people tend to refer to it simply as mouselook and that is okay, though technically incorrect. Anybody who refers to mouse turning as mouselook is stupid and ugly.

So I was thinking about samsara survival, what happened yesterday when terminus lost one of his lives while being the last player remaining, and what it means is possible for a doomguy player.

What I'm referring to is what is possible in every game of survival invasion; if there is only one player remaining and they die, and the respawn happens to be located away from where the monsters were facing when the player died, then the player is respawned with none or very few monsters active.

Normally this is just kind of funny to look at and maybe gives the player a moment to gather ammo before firing and alerting all the monsters again.

However for a player playing doomguy the situation is very different. Because the fist does not alert monsters in samsara, and the berserk fist deals 120-240 damage (instead of the 20-200 in vanilla doom) per hit it means that it is very possible for a careful doom player to solo any amount of monsters by attacking them one at a time provided they are all in the same wave.

Just thought it was interesting and wanted to point it out.

100 for a baron
500 for a revenant
750 for a spider mastermind
1000 for a cyberdemon
bonuses:
pistol start: *1.5 to all
punch kill: *2 on that monster

3 lives, first 1up at 2.000 then every 5.000, one "hero point", you earn another one every 20.000 that you can trade for a mid-level savepoint or an extra live

Not that I'm complaining, since it's from a certain point understandable. You silly Americans and your imperial "a mile is how fast the king's horse can run in a minute"/"this is how many levels id software put in doom 2" measurement system.

Here in the EU we entertain no such folly; our naming system is concise and straightforward.

A wad with 5 levels or less is simply called a pwad. A pwad that contains at least 6 new levels but no more than 15 is called a decawad, a wad with at least 16 but no more than 25 is a dudecawad, a wad with at least 26 but no more than 35 is a tridecawad, and so forth. All hub levels are counted separately for the purposes of naming.

As for Conversions the naming is similar but the amounts are not rounded. A wad which replaces at least 10% of the game assets is called a decicon (con is a shortened version of conversion), one which replaces at least 20% of the game assests is a dudecicon, and so forth until 100% of the game assets are replaced at which point it's either called a "conversion" or an iwad, depending upon whether it requires another wad to run.

So for instance something could be described as a decicon tridecawad hub, and you would know immediately that it is a hub-style pwad containing 26-35 levels with 10-19% of the game assets replaced with player-created ones. Much better I think.

Your European methods feel unwieldy for casual conversation, and seem only suited to message boards. ("How many levels did this replace again... I can't remember if 40% of the assets were changed or 60%...")

I propose a simpler naming convention.

A wad containing less than 16 new maps is called a pwad, and one containing 16 or more is a megawad.

A wad containing any number of new assets is called a partial conversion. One containing over or near half new assets would be a conversion, and one that replaces all assets is a total conversion (some vanilla textures that would be redundant to recreate may be acceptable in this classification).

That leaves you with simpler terms like "partial conversion megawad" and "conversion pwad", and gives you some leeway for lax conversation.

there are plenty of maps that take well over an hour to finish, especially if you like to get 100%. admittedly none from the IWADs (except maybe TNT) but i'm thinking of things like MM28 or HR24 which both took way over an hour the first time i played them.

This has to be my favorite Doom wad, perhaps even better than the actual Doom levels. I really wish it wasn't so system resource expensive or such an engine limitation bordercrosser, because when I got to picture related, and spoiler alert Highway to Hell started playing, I knew I was in for a rough ride, but holy fuck my framerate declined so rapidly and I just try my best only to ultimately fail. I normally play on 320x200 resolution, but I increased it for the picture.

Question:

I have a Doomseeker server for my friends with the Zandronum engine.
Sometimes we want to play Brutal Doom (the .pk3 is in the \zandronum\skins directory) and sometimes not.

How can I turn the .pk3 on/off without having to move the file?

>> No.1053750

>>1053745
fuck with the autoloads in the .ini

thats what i do with gzdoom anyway.

or just make 2 separate installs of the game, doom ain't that big brah

>> No.1053759

>>1053745
>>1053750

Just solved it.

What I needed to do was to just add the .pk3 path to the "Additional WADS and files" field in the Create Server window in Doomseeker.

I had tried this before but I selected brightmaps.pk3 instead of brutalv018a.pk3 by accident and didn't realized it till now, so I thought it didn't work.

Thanks though.

tigrblod.wad was...interesting.

I thought the base gimmick was kind of fun, but it just felt like it dragged on, and I'm not sure if the latter part is me being a jackass or what.

Also cramming basically the entirety of Doom 2's bestiary in one level is kind of "what".

running through plutonia with this on currently. Up to map 4. Seems like some of the bugs are kinked out, the rev's splitting in half are absolutely horrifying. lost souls seem worse although that may be due to the sound effects. mancubi leaving flame trails is a neat idea but i see it completely ruining tougher wads(as if brutal doom didn't do that already.) The ironsight fix on the assault rifle is a godsend though.

So, I've been dicking around with Brutal Doom and Accessories to Murder a lot lately, and I decided to return to classic doom. It was an odd experience after so long of having not played it. WHAT? Aw hell no, Marty isn't a childish no-name busta, he seriously makes an effort into making things and putting them before release date, and even if he takes more than 1 month to put his stuff, he does and he delivers.

Same thing happens with MagSigma X, who mantains Project MSX, everyone kind of worried about him since he was off from the forums 1 week before the Beta release date, but a few days later he delivered his stuff.
