Metroidvanias are usually 1-3 big maps with no towns, no dialogue-only NPCs, no purchasable weapons or armor and only some have experience points or gold. In general, upgrades in Metroidvania only come after beating a boss.

first-person action rpgs
you got quite a few on computers in the 90s, the peak as it were, then almost none at all on any other /vr/ consoles
you got like shining in the darkness...
and thats pretty much all i can think of lol

just found a cool one on GBA
mazes of fate
1st person dungeon crawling and puzzles, with some shining in the darkness kind of overworld where you like go to bars/towns and chat with characters to get quests
seems pretty cool so far for some GBA game made by a no-name argentinaian studio. you can even make your own custom class. i just went with the default rogue

some pretty cool music too
just a shame it has to come out of a GBA
