Was Sega America really the victim of its own success? Or has pop history ruined the truth again?

Weaboos love to say the American division killed Sega. But Sega was most popular in America and Europe, not Japan. And who's idea was it to make the Saturn mostly geared towards arcade style game fans primarily, the thing that has a bigger audience in Japan? Probably Sega of Japan. Who's idea was it to put the Dreamcast out in between the 5th and 6th gens making it so a lot of kids dependent on parents wouldn't get it? Probably Sega of Japan.

From what I read, Sega of America wanted a new console with the same cpu as Genesis became of muh easy to develop.

I've thought this too, so at least it's good to know I'm not alone in my insanity. Does anyone know of a good source for things like this?

Over the years, the facade of "SoA good, SoJ bad!" really fell apart. Nothing but biased, one-sided interviews with people like Kalinske, full of lies.
Sega's console were made by japanese. Sega's iconic games that are still beloved today are japanese.
Kalinske took the smart decision to bundle Sonic 1 with the Genesis, ok, that's cool... still doesn't make up for all the other bad decisions SoA had, and still couldn't produce any really good game on par with SoJ.
Sega had success in USA thanks to Sonic being a good game, not thanks to Kalinske being a good marketer.

SoA because 32x shaking consumer confidence
SoJ because weak Saturn 3D
They both fucked up.

It's not true. Sega was more popular in Japan and their real moneymaker was Virtua Fighter and Daytona in the 90's. Yu Suzuki himself has said that whatever budget Shenmue accrued was paid for in full by Virtua Fighter 3 alone. SoA was just a marketing arm, nothing more. The Sonic fascination is one of Barbie hysteria. In reality the division never did very much other than launch a couple successful marketing campaigns. The magic (and money) was always in Japan. If you want an actual source look at their financial records and inform yourself.

Why do we need a thread about Sega's death every day? There was a huge document leak just this year that showed pretty much ever area of Sega was making bad decisions and then worse ones to try and fix them.

>Sega had success in USA thanks to Sonic being a good game, not thanks to Kalinske being a good marketer.
Then why is Sonic one of the icons of gaming mascots in America, while in Japan he's not nearly as popular? Nintendo had a stranglehold over console market in Japan, in the US it was mixed and in the UK, it seems Sega was more popular than Nintendo at least back in the early 90s. Sega had successful arcade games yes, but this obviously didn't translate to console sales otherwise Saturn would have been a lot bigger.

The Console Wars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_Wars_(film)) documentary goes over the rise and fall of Sega especially America vs Japan divisions which was pretty interesting. From what I can remember, basically Sega Japan was jealous of Sega America's continued success which caused a cascade of 'selfish' decision leading to Sega's console market demise. They interview mostly Sega America employees, so most likely biased though. As the movie name implies, they go over Sega's battle with Nintendo as well. Overall, a solid watch for gaming fans.
