Lets talk about the SMLand games.

Man they are fucking weird compared to other Mario games, but they are really fun

God, I miss that level of weirdness. It's fucking depressing how unique those games still are, all these years later. Can-can, weird hopping bug things, exploding turtles, sphinxes, jiang shi, and the first and only time Wario has been a boss in a Mario game, and he was gigantic and looked demented as fuck.

>tfw every Mario game from now on will look and sound like New Super Mario Bros until the end of time

Those were the only Mario games I played as a child. I had a GB Pocket but no Nintendo home console, so 'regular' Mario games just seem weird and cutesy to me

Last week I found my old gray box gameboy with SML2 in it. I started running through the game and, without conscious thought, my muscle memory guided me into several secret areas. Felt great to know that the knowledge was still in my head somewhere. It felt like I was meeting an old freind I hadn't seen in years.

Not officially. Nintendo Power comics introduced Wario as Mario's childhood friend who developed a complex from always losing to Mario in games of pretend.

My fanon is that they are cousins.

Thes games had some truly unique levels, bosses and enemies. I love the open world on Mario Land 2. I love how unlike in Mario World you had an open world where you could complete the zones in any order you pleased.

I always found SML2 to have a really fucking eerie feeling to it.
I recently played it again because I got it for free on the 3DS, and I still feel the same way.
Dunno why. Maybe it's the Totaka song or something.

Much like with Link's Awakening vs. the 'Big' 2D Zeldas, Mario Land 2, for all its technical limitations, turned imagination (And a mild creep factor) up to 11, presumably because being a basically experimental title on the 'Small' console left the team with a great deal more of creativity than it'd otherwise get from Miyamoto & co., and consequently became a much better game for it.

Prolly the best 2D Mario, and with the exception of SMW2: Yoshi's Island, no other Mario game has shown anywhere near the same creativity.

OTOH, while SML 1 has some interesting ideas, by and large I'm kinda meh about it. Then again, suicide-bomber turtles... Would that kind of thing even fly today?

I don't care for SML1. I played it once or twice, but the physics are too wonky and I can't get past some of the bizarre enemies.

Now, SML2 is much better. It has that offness, but it doesn't detract from the game and gives it that strangeness in a good way, as well as feeling like a Mario game.

If Luigi can remove the bucket, and Mario can move his body freely with it on, why can't Mario remove the bucket himself? Or, better yet, why can't the fairy remove the bucket for him at the start of the level?

Mario Land 2 is my favorite 2D Mario game. I don't even like the others that much (more of a Mega Man/Donkey Kong guy). But Land 2 is great.

>> No.1046106

I love Mario Land 2. I absolutely love the zone themes in the game: The space zone, the halloween zone, the micro zone, even the mario zone. I can't think of any other Mario game that had so many unique and fun levels.

I didn't play it until it was re-released as a player's choice title, and strangely, I found the local K-mart selling them for $5 right after it was just re-released.

Despite that, I have to say I don't think any other vidya commercial is as memorable to me as the one for ML2. Though Air Fortress and Super Mario Kart come close

Totaka is the master of riding the line between unsettling and catchy music. I don't think I've heard a single composition of his I didn't like

>> No.1046645

Super Mario Land 2 was so odd because the team working on it really wanted to make a different game but were forced to make it Mario

The slower pace and emphasis on exploration was the result, and so was Wario himself. Even though he was the villain, they literally came up with a fat shitty ugly Mario as a jab at being forced to make a Mario title.

Then they had the last laugh when Wario got his own spinoff, where he got to be even MORE slow and deliberate and explore even more in search of piles of treasure.

Best part about Wario Land 1 is how even the music emphasizes the whole thing. There's a vaguely Mario-game feel to it, but it's just off, the main theme sounds a little annoying and fat and plodding just like Wario himself

The majority of remixes of Gameboy tracks I hear have really poor instrument choices that usually remove the feel of the original entirely, taking away the eerie trills or jarring crunchy impact of the system's feel, but this is actually nice... Sounds like a proper update. If a bit sparse. Might actually need some more bass.

SML1 is not bad for what it is. An attempt to bring SMB1 to the Game Boy while still bringing some new stuff to the table.

What I like about it to this day is its tiny-ass sprites. Some Game Boy games try to cram sprites that are way too big on to that tiny screen and feel cramped and claustrophobic as a result. SML1 has sprites precisely big enough and detailed enough for you to quickly tell you what you need to know about what you're looking at, and no bigger.

The game's title in Japan even implies the "super mario land" title is secondary, the main game title in Japan is The 6 golden coins, while in america it was just a sub-title.
They used "Super Mario Land 2" in the same way they used SML3 on Wario Land, or SMW2 on Yoshi's Island... except this one was still a Mario game.

I remember playing it when I was 9. Bought my first gameboy with Morta Kombat 2 and this game. I already had a Game Gear with some Sonic games and other platformers, but SML2 blew my fucking mind away. It was the first handheld game to make me feel totally immersed in it. I guess it's because it had a save function, and lots of secrets to discover, all the other handheld games I had played before it were mainly games without save or too many secrets, just pure arcadey portable fun, but SML2 was like an actual, wacky SMW in handheld version, it really was great.

Sadly, I lost the gameboy and the games on the same trip I got them... fucking hated me for that, and I never played SML2 again ever since, I'm waiting to some day find a decently priced copy, or maybe I'll just end up emulatin it on some nostalgic night.
