While not as many as now, they certainly had options at the time if they only wanted to pick Mario universe originals. Likewise, they had the Mario USA cast and if they wanted to, they could have probably worked in some not specifically Mario series, but very Mario in tone characters like Bubbles from CluClu Land, the Ice Climbers or Alice from Ballon Kid.

I did. Back when the game first came out, I eventually settled on Bowser and Peach because Bowser had good physical attack and didn't rely on FP, and Peach was a great healer that could heal the whole group.
