I’ve been on a metroidvania-style castlevania kick lately. Played sotn. Then aria of sorrow. Now I’m doing dawn of sorrow with a hack that replaces the cringey anime portraits.

It's mostly because I started with the Classicvanias last year. CV always had a presence in the 90's and the 2000's but I never started playing them until recently. That said it does look a lot better than the other games I've played including Rondo

It looks better but is a very different kind of game. Don't expect classicvania platforming in it, and also while there's many bosses none is really fin to fight, unlike classicvanias.

SotN is not that good. It's extremely gimmicky, poorly balanced and full of unnecessary jank. It becomes quickly apparent that the game wasn't well-thought out in general. It throws in so many disjointed mechanics that don't mesh together at all.

Most classicvanias are undeniably better games. Even the later metroidvanias like AoS and PoR improved on SotN in every way from level design to pacing to balancing to QoL, you name it.
SotN is not even a top 5 Castlevania game if we're being honest about it.

Who are your favourite Castlevania protagonists for classic and metroidvania? For metroidvania it's Alucard and Soma Cruz for classic it's John Morris and Richter Belmont for me.

Holy fuck I forgot how bad the Dawn of Sorrow art was. Hell, I forgot how most of that game went by the end. Is it just me or is Castlevania the best franchise with the biggest justification for hacks? Seems like nearly every game has some localization nonsense or busted mechanic.

I'm playing with the "definitive+" hack. Core gameplay is still the same. It just removes touchscreen stuff and changes the portraits. Plus minor re-balancing that I don't really give a shit about. I'm tempted to start over with a "no health items allowed" patch, since I don't have the self control to not trivialise the game with health potions.
