After finally learning to like Sonic's gameplay, I've been on a huge Genesis kick. I'm really getting addicted to Sonic's gameplay and now I'm working through a bunch of games. Nearly beat Streets of Rage 1 and that game is tight. Tried Golden Axe and don't like it as much because it feels so cheap. I beat Beyond Oasis and thought it was okay. It feels fun exploring the library since I never had one as a kid. Love the music on the Genesis.

Hell yeah my man.

Also agree on Golden Axe, despite the community hype, I can't really get into any of them. I think it's just because it's a first party IP so it gets more recognition, but there's a lot to love in the library in every genre, which makes it so fun to explore.

I've been going through the SEGA CD library for the past few years but stopped for a while to work on some other stuff. Easily my favorite system of all time, though. Would be nice if it got even half the amount of attention Saturn gets, especially considering it actually feels like a Genesis successor

Same, it's actually really fucking good. That CD audio alone would be a huge boost even if they added nothing else, but when you DO get more, it really elevates the system and has its own unique personality and charm.

Just walking around a video store the other day though, noticed they were selling a Sega CD. Too bad that wanted like $229 for it, lamao

I bought a Genesis but I haven't gotten that much enjoyment out of it. Here's what I've liked so far;
Flicky, so good I made a thread about it the other day
Midnight Resistance, great run-n-gun like Contra
Subterrania, seems good but it's very hard
Decap-Attack, pretty good platformer
Other than that I've tried a lot of games I just straight up disliked. I'm still looking for something else as good as Flicky, though.

The shmup library on Genesis is fucking fantastic. I think it's officially tied with the PC Engine in my mind. I'm diving into Eliminate Down for the first time. Got about half the game roughly down and I'm just having a fucking blast learning this one. One of the BEST horizontals I've ever played. Easily up there with first R Type and Gradius for me. It doesn't beat the presentation of Thunder Force IV, but in terms of level design, I might like it a little more.

The adjustable speed is so well done. At parts you zip around the screen like you're playing a Toaplan game or a PC Engine caravan shooter. Other times you can slow it right down for some focused Gradius/Salamnder style micrododging. Great weapon system too where you have three weapons, but no weapons feels redundant or shitty like in a Compile game. Every weapon has areas where they shine and the puzzle aspect of what works best where is just... *chefs kiss*

You're spot fucking on with that. PC Engine/TurboGrafx is as much a shmup/anime machine as the Neo Geo is a fighting machine, yet even still the Genesis gives it a run for its money in that department. Its fluid fast-paced action really lent itself to so much good shit.

Pic related is unironically one of my favorite games on the Genesis.
Rings of Power.
It was done by Naughty Dog no less. There's a lot to complain about this game such as the difficulty. This game is so hard that the instruction manual comes with a COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH inside.
Still this game was impressive in it's scope at the time, especially for Genesis RPGs. The world map is huge and you can get lost easily. It's dripping with charm and soul. I highly recommend it, but be warned: it is very very difficult. Don't feel bad about using a guide.

You're not wrong, in fact a handful of them are not even in English. The ratio of good to bad games however is higher than one would expect. It's sort of a quality vs. quantity thing. SEGA CD and TurboGrafx-CD respectively both almost feel like their own console gen to me, like there was a half generation between Gen 4 and Gen 5. And imo a lot of those games exceed the quality of both, especially in SEGA's case.

Just last night I played Target Earth for the first time. It was really cool. Never was a Sega guy, not even due to console wars drama just because I grew up with Nintendo and Sony consoles, but the Genesis has a really unique feeling to its games that I really like. Wish modern consoles were so different and everyone didn't try to do the photoreal boring bullshit third person shooter with waist high cover and forced walk n' talks.
Anyway, Target Earth is really difficult, but it scratches the mecha run n' gun itch. I consider it research because I'm trying to develop my own game in that vein.

My cousin's room was like this. He wasn't rich but was extremely spoiled (and extremely autistic though undiagnosed as this was the 90's). He had zero interests outside of video games. He unsurprisingly had no friends either.

yeah, I mean it isn't that huge. I'm pretty sure lots of kids had rooms like that. I knew a pigfarmer's kid who had a room like it (except they were in drawers, you open the drawer and dozens of games of one of many systems all neatly arranged), and guess what? His two sisters apparently had similar rooms with games and systems, though I never saw them. And they were also a very sporty family. How they got the money for all of them I have no idea.

I find that TurboGrafx-CD is great for Japanese games while SEGA CD is great for mainstream games. So, someone who prefers Japanese games is likely to prefer TurboGrafx/PCE CD while someone who prefers mainstream games might prefer SEGA CD. I always liked the Genesis but wish the Saturn had more of the kinds of games on it, SEGA CD is that sweet spot where they took the already existing Genesis hardware and made it just powerful enough to feel like a new system while not being as radical a departure as the Saturn was.

What non-Japanese games are there for Sega CD besides awful FMV shit?
The only games I care about on Sega CD are the Japanese ones.
Therefore the PCE-CD beats the shit out of it in terms of quantity, and the best of the PCE-CD is at least on par with the best of the Sega CD.

The Terminator and Road Rash are really good imo. If you like Aladdin for Genesis you might like Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim are generally held in high regard as well. Beyond that it has ports of Monkey Island, Heart of the Alien, Another World, and a few Amiga games like Wolfchild and Wonder Dog. Novastorm and Microcosm are alright but probably better played on 3DO. It also has the ESPN sports games which are pretty solid imo. Starblade is Japanese but it's a pretty good rail shooter too. Plenty of other platformers like Hook, Flink, and Puggsy are good on Genesis but the CD hardware makes them better.

I will say I prefer TurboGrafx-CD over Saturn. The TurboDuo itself also looks like a very cool console. Though personally it sits and no. 2 for me.

The only thing that I can think of, is that I was attempting to use the mini's USB controllers with KEGA and GENS on Windows 7. Upon looking into this issue, the OS is the only thing that it could be. I don't think BIOS's are utilized for cart based emulation, as is or was the case with PS2 emulation years ago.

Had a friend obsessed with this game and Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate.
He had a bootleg cartridge of X-Men that let you skip to levels and ended up crazy good at it from start to finish from replaying every part so many times. On Mortal Kombat he got so good he could beat the tallest towers at the hardest difficulty with flawless victory all the way. He ended up dropping games and getting into fitness though.

Kid Chameleon. It gets shat on for being a SoA production, with the typical GEMS music and not the best graphics, but the level designs are brilliant and plentiful, the abilities are very cool, and it presents a challenge level not frequently seen in the genre of pure 2D platformers. It is one of the best designed platformers of the era, and it is a real shame more people won't give it a chance.
