What's the benefit of each and what side does /vr/ stand on?
Time to settle this.

Emulation all the way. The games are what matters, and games are all software. Also, many retro games have terrible player-hostile game design that is objectively improved with emulation-only features like save states and speed-up

Emulation can have higher fidelity. It's convenient. I dunno. I emulate everything but ps1 and 2. As long as I can play the games I'm happy, but for playstation I like to play as it was released/intended.

Emulation is morally incorrect and you should not partake in it.

Do whatever makes you happy. If you actually play the games in those folders, maybe enjoy some awesome shaders, that's cool. If you buy consoles and actually play the games, on a flashcart or not, cool. If you don't actually play the games, maybe try the other method. If you buy games and put them on a shelf and it makes you happy, do it. Men have a rich history of fulfillment through collecting random shit like coins, postage stamps, cards. The most important thing is that you have fun and have your finances and life in order.

Hmm what about the idea that emulation preserves these games?

Preservation of data means no redistribution. Data gets corrupted over so many iterations. If you are actually going to “preserve data” then you need a virgin dump, in copied or shared for structural integrity through the years.

Even if the emulation is 100% perfect there's an inherent input lag and that messes with action-intensive parts of it. It is simply not the same game and is going to be worse. Even if you say the lag/imperfect emulation adds an extra challenge sure but what you read about the game and your opinions on it will be regarding a different game.

Emulation
>free
>accessible
>fan translations, mods, and romhacks for conveniences or enjoyment
Real hardware
>machine is made for the game so usually no compatibility issues
>closer to intended experience
>can be simply nostalgic, or a specific happiness in owning a physical game
>can be resold for a profit if desired

Both are valid, I usually stick with emulation personally.

I can't really talk about Nintendo since I genuinely hate all their systems, but I like to emulate my Genesis and PS1 games to cleanup the hardware limitations on these, no more slowdowns/bad framerates or the agressive headache inducing dithering of the PlayStation.

I use both. I prefer original hardware because I like the feeling of being truly taken back in time with putting the cart in the console and playing in front of the warm glow of a CRT with original controllers and flipping through the physical manuals, but if there's a very obscure game for an obscure system I don't own I'll have no shame in emulating. I don't know what it is with 4chan and it's false dichotomies, you either go all out on one or the other but I think that's just the internet in general these days. Do what makes you happy, just play the fucking games for god's sake.

Reminds me of a Sega Genesis M2 I bought at a Cash Converters back in the late 90s. The picture would randomly flicker so I opened it up and it was full of LIVE cockroaches. I managed to get Cash Converters to pay to fumigate my house afterward in exchange for keeping quite and I got $500 store credit. I didn't use a dime, I never shopped at Cash Converters again.

If you used psx with composite as intended there'd be no dithering, because the composite signal blends dither pattern.
That's the intended look.
I dont get why people want those old games to be something they're not. Such a puzzling stance to have.
