Does anyone still play online? What about Nam/BF2? Are they still fun?
Retro Battlefield thread I guess.

maybe I'm getting old but the idea of ANY battlefield game being retro is pretty wild to me. 1942 was great but let's keep it real itt and assert that bf2 was and is the best.

Definitely, 2 is peak BF. Nam was pretty shit but I liked it regardless and would bounce around 1942, Nam and 2 until I grew up and out of it. Now I yearn for the good old days again.

Nah buddy, Nam is the shit, killer soundtrack and the kit loadouts & vehicle selection feels more unique compared to the more samey feeling of 2.

There are 2-3 alive BF1942 servers at any given time. They range from about 15 people online to a full 64 during peak time whenever that is.
The downside is they only play on the same set rotation of maps and never anything else, and 90-95% of the players have been playing non-stop since release. If the map has planes, they will all be bombing you from so high up they aren't even visible and you'll have no hope of hitting them with AA. If not, you will be grenaded or exp-pack'd before you even get a chance to shoot in most cases.
Provided you get a chance to shoot first, 75% of them will just dance around your bullets then 1-shot you. You will sometimes shoot people point-blank and they won't take damage or die. Unless people are clearly cheating by shooting with perfect aim from a pistol across the map, the admins don't do shit about cheating reports. Unless it's a new player, then they are clearly cheating.
I honestly have more fun playing skirmish with fucking bots. At least I can play on different maps and people actually die when I shoot them.

I've heard stories of autists base-raping from the opposite side of the map with artillery because they memorized the positions of the clouds in the skybox.

They exist. But they usually get hit back by another 'tismo on the other side of the map who figured out where they are and landed a shot by aiming at the right pixel in the skybox.
It's the plane guys with flight sticks who tend to cause the most unfun gameplay. If your side doesn't have the same people, then you spend most of the match getting your own airfield carpet bombed. It's almost impossible to get high enough in the air to fight them once they are up there. They will see you coming and nail you in a dive while you can't see them or return fire in most cases. Even if you have a top port gunner, he'll be hard pressed to take down one of them before they shoot you out of the sky. Don't expect AA to save you, they'll wait until you get high enough for them to avoid getting hit by it. Your only hope is to get in a plane at the start of the match and win dogfights against people using flight sticks. Once you get shot down, you are done flying.
On the plus side, on the rare times there's equal plane guys on both sides, you'll never really know they are on the server. They just do their dogfights and occasionally one parachutes out behind your lines and surprises the hell out of you.

Wrong. Bf2 killed the series. I enjoyed it at the time and still play it against bots. But it is responsible for the eventual transformation of the franchise into soulless cash grabbing sequels. It also started the trend of shitty naming conventions for subsequent games.

Hiding in the jungle and sniping bases then moving on after they send a search party was surreal. Not to mention ambushing and taking down an entire squad using just a plantation knife has never been replicated in another game, ever. Not even rising storm 2.

rip, that's about what i'd expect. are there any mods that make bots fun?

Favorite is 1942 with mods like Desert combat. I had a lot fun with Vietnam too. Problem with the early Battlefields was baseraping with planes and helicopters but at least in Vietnam you could spawn with stinger missiles. BF2 added progression with XP points that I never liked and iron sights. BF2 feels like the start of the modern battlefield games
