This is the type of game some zoomer emulates and then dismisses all arcade/retro games as trash because he thinks they are all like this.

The hitboxes are literally the worst I've ever seen in a videogame.
The jumping is one of the worst I've ever seen in a videogame.
The boss design is utterly embarrassing.
The RNG item system is horribly inconsistent and unbalanced.
The game is filled with constant bugs everywhere.
The level design is cheap RNG bullshit.

Even if the multitude of technical issues were fixed, the game is still just mediocre at best. This game came out the same year as Super C for NES on much stronger hardware, and still gets mogged into oblivion by that game.

I remember this game very fondly because they had it in a local store when I was a kid. Zoomers need to realize that progress in arcade cabinets was incremental. Everywhere didn't just get the hot new shit as soon as it came out. Rastan wasn't mindblowing by 1987 standards but if your local grocery store or pizza parlor had a lineup of early 80's games it looked pretty shiny and new by comparison.

Also, if you just get to just sit down and play it with infinite continues its flaws and simplistic nature become more apparent but that's not how we did things. You would usually have a few quarters and you'd get to try a couple games but not get anywhere near beating them. In three minute increments between pizza slices it was amusing enough

I like it.

It's definitely odd and janky in some ways, I genuinely feel you on the collisions, odd jump physics, and terrible bosses that are basically unbeatable if you don't cheese or exploit them.

But once you get past that it's got killer atmosphere, satisfying slashing, and varied and tense level designs with a lot of variety. I'm not sure how much of my enjoyment of the game is how authentic a Conan love letter it feels like, and doubtless it'd be more forgettable with a different skin, but at the same time I can't deny that landing tomb-stoning down stabs on motherfuckers and run by slashes on them just feels good either.

Don't blame anon for not liking it though, it's not for everyone.

Most of Taito's games were good so this is probably good. I've never taken the time to play it but I probably will now.

>> No.10416314

I've been trying to do this no death for a few days now and it's not even that the game is hard, it's just so fucking infuriating how bullshit and broken it is. It's like the only game I've ever played where almost every death legitimately feels like the game's fault.

Glitching through platforms, eaten inputs, jumping backwards, goat heads not spawning where they should (but then they spawn three in a row when you're full health), fucking broken ass hitboxes (constantly, everywhere, every hitbox in the entire game is shit), enemies that instantly deal 80% of your hp in one nanosecond (damage is SUPER inconsistent), bullshit enemy spawns and pathing oftentimes leading to unavoidable damage, the random fireballs that stop you dead mid-jump, enemies that literally do their attack animation off-screen and hit you the frame that they come on screen, your attacks constantly going right through enemies, janky ass jumping and rope mechanics, enemies get stuck inside your hitbox and then just instakill you, items that just don't get picked up the first time you walk over them. It's all just so fucking bullshit, you are basically just hoping the game lets you win and doesn't fuck you over with some new retarded bullshit.

What an absolute dumpster fire of a game. Fuck Taito and fuck this broken piece of shit sorry excuse for a videogame.

Games have a difficulty factor and a frustration factor. This is probably only like a 2/10 for difficulty but 10/10 for frustration by virtue of being completely broken bullshit.

I don't know the last time a game pissed me off this much being so shit, but the actual game itself isn't too hard at all even for no death, and you will learn it pretty quickly. Then it's just a matter of getting lucky with all the bugs and bullshit. If you're just going for a regular 1CC (instead of no death), it's really easy since you get multiple lives to allow the game to fuck you over with bullshit multiple times and still succeed.

Hard cope, only bad arcade games cheat the player by making it impossible. Most are designed to have a smooth difficulty curve, and make you 'want' to play them and therefore spend more of your quarters. They also don't waste your fucking time like most console games do, especially after the CD-era.

I used to play Rastan Saga on TGFX16! Actually just beat it on MAME for this first time ever and this was the most amazing experience since I beat Final Fight and the D&D beat ‘em ups also on MAME. Remember that we only had a few quarters to our names as kids when these were in the arcades so most of us could never beat these games.

Rastan Saga 2 even has amazing music and some evil laughing when compared to the home console ports and you play as Conan beating up Greek mythological monsters.

I did try the first game on MAME and while the animations are very fluid the difficulty is ridiculous even on easy. Both games are very, very good for the 80s and nothing else I tried to play at random on the MAME list could compare.

I fucking loved the sms version. It had insane atmosphere, I rented it all the fucking time. I was absolutely dogshit at it but it just had this weird creepy dark vibe (captain silver & kenseiden had a similar thing) and even though it only had like three songs they're all badass.
