Games that turned out to be much better than you expected.

I started playing Batman for NES the other day, and it really is great. I appreciate the fact that the game is difficult, but in a well-designed way that allows you to easily blast through the levels that you've mastered. I'm currently stuck on the second boss, the last bit of it that you have to destroy is really tricky.

Second boss gave me hell for years until I learned to slow down and not try to rush him. He's cake, and you'll get him as soon as you learn how he works.

What is the proper solution?

I always shoot his first couple of targets with the gun and punch the last part to death. Gets me by. Granted, it's not a fast method of doing it, but it gets the job done.

Yeah there were a lot of great licensed games back in the day. Batman Returns on the SNES is great, too. And the Disney-Capcom games on the NES (especially Darkwing Duck). Pic related is a surprisingly high-quality gem.

Cool Spot is a pretty fun game too, once you get used to the abysmal draw distance.

That last part isn't too bad if you can conserve your life for the end of that boss. Patience is needed for the first part until you learn the pattern (two bullets up, two bullets down) and the second part is easy with the rocket pistol. The third part works best IMO if you get as close to it as possible without actually touching it and punching it to death. The bullets seem to spawn past you that way and the boss is free after that. I think you might get shot once as you run in to close the distance.

My friend forced me to emulate this game in college. He said "I know what it looks like but it's really fucking good!" I assumed it was a case of nostalgia goggles but I humored him and gave it a shot anyway.

I played through the whole game with him giving me tips over my shoulder. The game did not disappoint. I was amazed at just how good it was. Keep an eye out for this game at thrift stores and the like. It's going to be expensive someday if it isn't already.

This game disappointed me, honestly. The gameplay is fun, the graphics are good, and the music is awesome.

The only problem is that it doesn't feel like Batman. You have a few backgrounds lifted from the movie, but all of the enemies are original characters and Batman doesn't even look like Batman.

I know that the 8-bit graphics wouldn't have allowed for him to be black, but didn't the programmers know that you're supposed to substitute blue in those situations? When has Batman ever been purple? It doesn't look like him and it doesn't feel like I'm playing as him. It feels like I'm playing an unrelated (but admittedly awesome) game which just happens to have the Batman name thrown on it.

Just tested both of them simultaniously and not only are the animations more fluid on the Genesis version but they are a lot faster and don't skip frames.

About the only thing the SNES has going for it with this game is the music.

Not the OP but whatever you're getting at is dead wrong.
All the bosses with the exception of the robotic stages are characters from the comic books, as well as at least four of the basic enemies (granted there are multiples of them).

The programmers DID substitute blue in Batman's color scheme. Batman's suit is blue and his mask, cape, glove other shits are purple, both of those being the darkest palette colors besides black, and allowing for the most accents to give him detail.

Even then, most of the cutscenes of Batman have him in black because there's more freedom for use of color.

But you're right in that its not true-to-movie, and I think that's awesome, too. It didn't tie itself to the plot of the movie, it was original, unpredictable, and fun. No other Batman game could do that until the Arkham games.

>> No.1041027

>>1040994

The first boss and the guy from the cave are actually in the comics? What are their names?

And I still think that Batman's costume should have been deep blue like it is in the cutscene where he's leaping into the Batmobile.

The fodder villains are the ones who should have worn purple - like the goons from the movie.

>I know that the 8-bit graphics wouldn't have allowed for him to be black,
Yes it would have. The problem is you wouldn't want a black batman on that black backdrop. If you were going to have a black batman all of the scenery would need to colored more brightly so he stands out clearly so the player isn't having a bitch of a time seeing him.
But they sure as fuck could have made the backdrops similar purplish hues and have batman black. Though if they're sharing palette with the enemy and hud that's problematic. They'd have to change the palette around. Also it's not that it's 8-bit graphics, it's that it's NES PPU could only hold 6 bit color and the palette is split up into 4 -16 color palletes which have limits on applying to backgrounds and sprites. So it's not like you get get access to all 64 colors wherever you want either. The whole thing's kind of a mess.

8-bit unconstrained graphics would have been amazing for a NES. Also color bitness is less effected with higher resolution. Since you can effectively take a 3-bit color palette and produce level shading based on group patterns.

That's what I was talking about. Batman Returns on the Super Nintendo has a black suit and several black backgrounds, but it's able to make him stand out from it. The NES could not have easily accomplished this feat without a noticeable white outline.

The way both Batman games were designed always made me wonder if they weren't originally supposed to be something else, you know, like a Journey to Sillius or Shatterhand kind of deal, maybe the original game was supposed to be an original IP or some random obscure sentai show, and just latter decided to slap some Batman imagery to make it sell more copies.
