It's only maybe 20% bigger than a HRAP or TE. It just looks boxy.

And a lot of fighting gamers still prefer huge arcade sticks. They sit on the floor with the stick in front of them, providing very good stability. Little sticks are murder on your back when you try this with them.

>> No.1040498

>>1040454

The smaller Japanese-based sticks generally go on your lap or a table, not the floor.

The controller you posted is over twice the height of a TE, AND they sacrificed all the left forearm support to cut down the width (and still wound up bulkier than a TE). There's just no way around the bulk. IL parts are huge and require lots of clearance.

They also have terrible throw/engagement and unresponsive plungers but that's another issue entirely.

OP asked about arcade sticks, you said you didn't think anyone had ever made a stick using IL parts, and I told you people have been doing it for nearly 20 years.

I'm not here to debate which one is better or worse. But I will caution you not to be overzealous about the whole "American" parts vs Japanese thing. Slagcoin has a lot of fancy info and statistics, but the author is hugely biased in favor of Japan. In practice and real gameplay there are many situations where many competitive gamers prefer the big sticks. Notably in MVC2 and Super Turbo.

I recently picked up a Combat King arcade stick with SFIV artwork. It's a Chinese-made $60 joystick with cheap stock parts, but it's built so that it can be easily modded with whatever buttons and/or stick you can get to fit in there. This counts as /vr/-related because it's able to connect to a PlayStation so I can use it for Metal Slug X. My primary purpose for this stick, however, is playing PS2 re-released of Neo Geo games.

Of course, it also has a USB port for my PC. I don't know if this is from the manufacturer or the sellers, but every time I see a Combat King stick for sale, it's always advertised to come with a DVD with a bunch of arcade ROMs and a compatible emulator> I've been making sure to get use out of that.

Seconding this question. I've heard that the Seimitsu LS-40-01 is great but I'd like some more opinions.

Also interested to hear thoughts on buttons for shmups. Reading around some forums the concensus seems to be that it's personal preference but Sanwa buttons are more sensitive so if you like to rest your fingers on the buttons and don't want to use bombs by accident maybe Seimitsu buttons would be better. >Now which stick would you guys say is best for shmups?

Good question...

Part of you answer is wither or not you're devoting all your game play to a single game or genre of games.

Personally, for shmups I literally 'claw' the joystick to drag around my ship/plane/jet/tank across the screen. I find the ball style works perfect for that.

As for fighters/platformers, I like to use the bat style. Especially of I have to tap the stick to get a certain result (Half jump or Hadoken).

For MAME or emulation, I find that the Half Bat sorta splits the difference between the two.

Fortunately, if a stick is not to your liking, you can generally change them by removing a clip on the bottom and replacing it with a style you enjoy. Many places will even sell you custom colors and transparencies of ball/stick, too.

Just received my Brawlstick as well. My predicted was right - I don't mind the buttons, they register easily and are a lot of fun to mash. The joystick is utter arse. If you let go, you have to wait for it to return to the center, which means for the time that it is returning to the center, it's still registering input! The four-way plate is quite awful as well.

However, I still have a lot of peace in mind, as if I had spend £100+ on a stick with a joystick I didn't like then I would've been utterly gutted.

Honestly, they're actually very decent. They are why I wanted a stick in the first place.

The stick, while pretty much a piece of plastic glued onto a d-pad, lack quite a lot of responsiveness but has a very short throw, so it doesn't really matter that much. I also really like the button, as while they aren't microswitched, they are pretty punchy.

If you want full clickiness then you should look for the JP versions, which actually have microswitched joysticks.

>the difference between the models with "-01" and those without?
Apparently, "The Seimitsu LS-40-01 joystick is very similar to the LS-40. This model of the joystick has its microswitches soldered to a PCB and connects via a 5-pin cable. "
The LS 32 has a different mounting plate than LS 32-01 (the latter being compatible with MadCatz's SFIV SE / Brawl / Tatsunoko sticks).

Good to pick up as a starter stick if you can get it cheap, but the components have very little longevity and a goofy feel. You'll want to swap it all out if you plan on playing seriously.

Still have an arcade stick for Dreamcast. That's how I play Soul Calibur. Holla.

I ran into a problem while installing Sanwa OBSF-30 on my Tatsunoko vs Capcom stick (which is supposedly the same as other low budget MadCatz sticks). The little tabs in the picture are much bigger than in the default knockoff-buttons so they get stuck at that point, leaving them unsnapped and about 5 mm higher than supposed. After sanding all four tabs I managed to fit two buttons in, but aren't these buttons advertised everywhere as the perfect buttons for modding a SFIV / Brawl stick?
Should I just use superhuman strength to force them through or have I missed something important?

I fitted the same buttons into a WWE brawl stick 2 days ago and they went in fine. They tended to get stuck out a bit on one side and I had to press pretty hard to pop them in. When they went in all the way they made a metallic pinging sound, shit was weird

Because I play both modern fighters and old arcade classics on my pc, I splurged when I bought my stick.

Hori Fighting Edge, it glows!

the only difference between -01 models and non -01 models is that the -01 models use the 5 pin harness to hook up (Up Down Left Right + GND), whereas the none 01 models have tabbed microswitches.

Generally speaking you want the -01 model. It's a drop in replacement for a retail arcade stick, and less wiring for a custom.

I got one and i hate it. Very glad I upgraded to a TE stick. joystick presses quite often don't register, octagonal gate isn't my favourite, stick is very clicky and requires more force than is comfortable to move, it's also a pain in the arse to reassign the keys and if you want it to be compatible with other systems you'll need to shell out for a separate (and proprietary) adapter. Avoid.

Does anyone triple mod their sticks with an i-pac for PC and a PS360 or original MadCatz PCBs for current-gen SHMUPS etc.?

Since MAME has the raw_input api, does this make USB with an i-pac faster or PS/2 connection?

Thought i might post this here.
I picked up an NES Advantage that doesnt work.
The buttons dont register and the turbo LEDs dont light up. Are there any common things i should check? any cleaning? Anything in particular that is prone to going wrong?

Every time I hear someone call something a "fighting stick" now I'm going to think of them as a degenerate
