I think it's really hard to say for PS2. Something like ferrari challenge looks super realistic and clean, GT4 does as well, SotC is insane with its technology, ZoE2 moves like butter and looks like god, god of war 2 is sure to drop some jaws, valkyrie profile 2 is restrained but has a mad style rich in detail.

For Xbox I think games like Carve, DOUBLE STEAL, and Scrapland are stunners, as well as Amped 2, I think psychonauts is some stinky cheese man looking shit but the detail is hard to deny in it.

Auto Modellista has a great style
Sonic 3D Blast on Genesis deserves some credit.
Half-Life 2 on Xbox. Yes it's muddy, but pretty impressive all things considered.

What happens is that this may not be the most advanced game on N64, but it looks good, even when scaled to a higher internal resolution. It's like Megaman Legends.
There's nothing particularly advanced in ML, far from it, but it looks great to this day.

Meanwhile Conker and Perfect Dark may be technically impressive, but they look like shit nowadays. Blurry pre-rendered textures, blocky and ugly segmented models, garish colors, overdone reflection maps.

I haven't watched that video but in that Ninja Gaiden picture, and every other NES game I can think of, each background part is on a different X axis. In that pic above the pillars look like they overlap with the sky AND with the plants behind, as if there were several bg layers like on SNES. It's just as I described. The pillars and trees are all on the same layer. It's an optical illusion because as the game draws each scanline it changes the graphics ever so slightly. Do this with perfect timing and it appears as if there's more than one background layer.

Before saying this I want to say “best looking” and “highest fidelity” are two different things.

As far as what OG Xbox game had the highest fidelity, then I’d give that to Riddick. I don’t think any game pushed the Xbox to its limit quite like it, not even Doom 3 or Half Life 2. It was a next gen game on a current gen console, black magic was used to create it and it took advantage of every single feature the Xbox could use.

Riddick is an interesting game and it has great art as well as solid technical chops, it does however have a significant shortcoming - to maintain performance the game actually uses dynamic resolution scaling with a bilinear filter. It's pretty easy to notice when the game becomes super soft and simultaneously chunky looking, it stays fluid and fun but seeing it dip to what looks like 240p with an n64-tier amount of blur is really harsh at times.

Riddick is a great looking game but in the pursuit of high tech and solid performance they were very aggressive in some scenes to the detriment of the overall image composition.

That is true, a pretty early example of dynamic resolution scaling too.
In fairness, although you could notice it, it wasn’t too jarring in 2004 on your tube tv.
When Riddick was firing on all cylinders though, it was a sight to behold. I was sincerely shocked at how good it looked. Dynamic res scaling or not, I would have to say it has higher fidelity and more graphical features than any other Xbox title. I would say only Halo 2 or Doom 3 were it’s only competition and Riddick slightly edges them out.

I hope Digital Foundry Retro does a video on it one of these days, I need full autistic analysis.

Best Graphics on GameCube is definitely not twilight princess. It’s not even the best looking adventure game, that would maybe be Starfox Adventures.
I’d say the Rogue Squadron games probably made the most of GameCube’s hardware. I’d also say Metroid Prime is more graphically impressive than Twilight Princess.

Splinter Cell on Xbox is easily the best port, but Riddick/Halo 2/Doom 3 beat it.

Other than that you can make an argument for every one of your other choices for being highest fidelity.
