Is the R33S honestly worthwhile though? What's the point of being able to emulate N64, DreamCast, PSP, DS, etc without either a touch screen or a single analog stick? Also, GKD seems to be aggressively comparing this to the RG Nano. They even copied the three colours the RG Nano comes in. I don't know why. The RG Nano was a fucking flop and nobody wants it, the few customers who did get it had their reviews deleted from Anbernic's website. I think GameKiddy is trying to bankrupt itself with both its marketing approach (WHOA, BIG SECRET COMING, WHOA, NEW LAYOUT NEVER SEEN BEFORE, WHOA, PLEASE FOLLOW AND SHARE TO GET MORE INFO) and it chasing to do a better RG Nano when the RG Nano was a hilarious unwanted flop.

Because it uses Android and it feels light to people who own Switches. I flashed Lineage OS to mine, but Burnout 3 and SSX Tricky run slow on it. Solid for 5th Gen with some 6th Gen depending on what it is. It's okay out of the box for anything else, but you're leaving a lot of performance on the table if you run Anbernig's shitty Android build. Without tweaking, they are great for Playstation and a bit too fast for N64, that stick had a bit more resistance than the ones on the RG505. I believe it's the only chinkheld under $200 to have analog triggers too if you plan on anything else DC. Pocket 3+ works as well, being a bit faster and 16:9. All Famiclones are basically just one of those 256-in-1 NES cartridges back in the day, in handheld form. They'll have anywhere between 192 to 2000 NES games, hacks, clones, etc and the game list can't be modified or added to. You get what's on the device itself. Some are neat, most are absolute fucking dog shit.
A neat device is the Anbernic Retro Mini, which is both a famiclone AND a retro emulation handheld that focuses on NES, GB, GBC, and GBA emulation. It has two menus, one for the famiclone built in games and one for ROMs. I love the thing.

Also, these famiclones come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes with different NES roms/hacks on them, usually with the typical main titles like Contra but not Mario titles as some flimsy way of avoiding detection from Nintendo. Some might have Super Mario Brothers 1. The one you posted is the most common one, many vendors will bulk buy them and try to sell them for $20 each at conventions. The appeal is playing a quick game of Mario, Tetris, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong etc. with rechargeable battery and backlight (+ A/V out) for dirt cheap and without having to buy an actual modded Game Boy or NES. I went into these expecting to hate them and I ended up buying more of them and probably playing them more than I play any other handheld, mostly just for Tetris and Donkey Kong. The low price also makes them fun to collect

If you just want a cheap emulator handheld there's stuff like >>10391994, PMP IV, SF2000, X6 etc.

How has no one made a “perfect DS handheld” yet? The RGB30 would almost be it if it had a touchscreen. Just make either a dual-screen 4:3 handheld, or a largely vertical-focused handheld that basically uses a phone screen in portrait mode. That $25 has nothing to do with shipping, it's a tax on all goods and services called VAT. Since it includes both good and services, it's calculated using the full price including shipping, $114 in your case. EU passed a law forcing all foreign entities to pay them VAT upfront a few years ago, ostensibly to "protect European producers from unfair competition". This justification seems laughable because almost nothing is made in USA or Europe any more, and even more absurd in the case of gaming consoles and the like, because I'm pretty sure that the closest thing to a gaming handheld that Europe ever produced was Nokia N-gage. Vote for parties that want to leave the European Union in your next elections, this shit is cancer. They also passed a law saying that only companies can buy concentrated hydrogen peroxide, so restoring Dreamcast units or old PC keyboards in Europe is pretty much impossible for cheap now.

If the shipping was free you'd pay $120.78 because 22% VAT would be calculated from $99 alone. So it costs you ~$21, not "40% extra" like you said.
>or that just don't add that tax.
I'm not aware of any such companies. Everyone does it. AliExpress, eBay, everything that uses Shopify. The first two will just show you the price with VAT already included if you use European frontends, that's the only difference.

repairing the D-pad and shoulder buttons is easier than repairing the hinge, but will probably require a motherboard swap
assuming the switches themselves are fucked and not just the plastic, there is no way to replace them without some pretty serious microsoldering
I'd just get a Japanese DS Lite with a broken display for $15 and do a motherboard swap

Steam Deck OLED just dropped, panel is still 1200 x 800 but of course OLED over LCD. Also has a 50wh battery instead of the 40wh included. Supposedly has a new AMD APU inside it called Sephiroth, but outside of efficiency gains it seems to have the same performance for games, so nothing new there.
Cool for new deck owners but I hope the screen gets sold separately.

I personally think that RP3+ is a perfect match for PSP because of its size, aspect ratio and the ability to play most PSP games upscaled and RGB30 is a perfect match for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Game Gear because of very square aspect ratios that those consoles used (that weren't meant to be stretched to 4:3 like with home consoles) and high-resolution display enabling the use of decent shaders.

On a strictly physical sense, 353V(S) is the perfect vertical Game Boy clone. Too bad the chip sucks dicks and so does the d-pad.

RGB30 for its screen on GB(C), NGP(C) , X68k, TATE, plus comfortable ratio for integer scale fags. Not ideal buttons, but much better than expected.

X28 is a serious contender for best horizontal handheld design, or at least it would be if the sticks weren't defective. So comfortable, so perfectly sized, so tragic. Also slower RAM compared to other T618s.

RP2S is the best fit for Dremcast as the only cheap chinkheld with analog triggers and a chip fast enough to run it.

>>10396189
Flip is RK3566, works for weaker stuff but leaves you hanging on DC and N64. I'd go 2S, but keep in mind T610/8's 6th gen capabilities are massively overblown. I got smelee running smooth on 1 on 1 matches, but it doesn't really like 4 player matches or adventure mode, for example.

The only thing that sucks dick so far is that the OLED screen will not be an easy "drag-and-drop" solution, at least according to Valve in a recent PC gamer article.
>If you have anything like my tinkering soul, the first thing to occur to you the instant you heard Valve was making a Steam Deck OLED was about whether you'd be able to buy the screen from iFixit—in the same way you can buy the top LCD Steam Deck panel right now—and drop it into an original Deck.
>Sadly, it looks like that's not going to be a thing… but that's obviously not going to stop people trying.
>"Because of all these changes and improvements," Deck developer, Lawrence Yang, explains to me, "the parts are not swappable with the Steam Deck LCD unit."
>"We'll still sell, and make available all Steam Deck LCD internal parts for repairs and replacements. But for the most part, because we changed so much inside, there's not as much back and forth swapping that's going to be possible."
>So, I ask the obvious question… can someone buy a Steam Deck OLED module and drop it into their existing Steam Deck?
>"I'm sure people will try it, but it's probably not going to go well," laughs Yang.
Granted you can plug the Deck into any number of OLED displays, and there's portable OLED monitors too. And its not like that stopped people from releasing that 1200p screen upgrades for the Deck either. But until more videos come out showing that it can be done with no issues whatsoever or some company releases an equally doable screen OLED upgrade, LCD owners are going to be left out for now. Thankfully the game performance doesn't seem to be worth upgrading.

Am I the only one who thinks the new Deck isn’t all that hype? Yeah, they fixed the screen and the battery life and basically every problem people had with the old deck, but that’s all for the $549 model at minimum. The Deck’s biggest advantage was its massively lower price compared to stuff like the Ally and the dozens of Aya Neos. Now it’s sacrificing that price advantage, just to be on-par with the other machines spec-wise, except in the one spec that matters, which is raw performance. Who’s gonna want to pay ROG Ally prices for a device way weaker than the Ally?

ROG and Lenovo still cost more and have worse power efficiency and battery life so fwiw, the Deck is undisputed. Getting 20% less performance but double the battery life is a good tradeoff for most people, tho Valve are jewish for having a cheapo model where they can dump their old parts instead of making that OLED too.

Can you even remap inputs on injected GBA/SNES games? AKA, the only way you can play titles from those consoles on a non-'new' model 3DS. Unless you're fine with consistent slowdown.

There's no slowdown if you don't inject SNES roms and just use an emulator. Injection is hit n miss, most of the time I just use an emulator where you can change inputs. I play injects on a 2ds so I can only play SNES through emulator, but so far it works great, I mean I own 3 sufamis and a shit load of games, so I personally don't usually emulate many snes games, usually just hacks

Sensible answers i guess. I already own a n3ds xl, so it just doesnt make sense to me to buy a completely different machine for when i want to play gbc games bc it emulates them perfectly. GBA, NDS, and 3DS (of course) games are all run natively, so it just makes sense to choose that over emulation.
There are cooler options with a single screen for GB/GBC out there like you said, but 3ds still is the most bang for your buck option if you want something that can play everything really well.
>>10396903
1) Sick ass collection there, goddamn seriously. Love how you threw in the old phones in there too lol. Pic related is what I have here in my college apartment, it's missing my og 3ds and mario 25th anniversary dsixl back at my childhood house.
2) Sorry to hear that even the 3ds xl is super uncomfortable for you. I have no problems with it at all so I guess it just depends on the person. I hope we can just agree to disagree in that case, again super nice collection.
>>10396912
You get it, hell yeah 3dsbro
>>10396921
Afaik, there is no slowdown on GBA/(most)SNES games. Newer GBA emulators use the ds mode to run the games natively like the phat ds and ds lite did. Also you might be able to remap buttons on the 3ds snes emulator but it's been a while since i used it bc i usually use my Wii U for snes emulation.

>> No.10396951

>>10396838
Yes, people want something with two screens but they don't want the shitty small resolutions of the 3DS's screens or its inability to emulate anything past 32-bit hardware due to weak design or the uncomfortable ergonomics of the 3DS family.

Ill give ya that the pro controller does feel a little cheap, but it's comfortable to hold and the buttons feel great.
The gamepad is built well and although it never financially succeeded, you gotta admit the wii u was a pretty cool idea and has some great games on it.

Now the dpad on the SWITCH pro controller is a giant sack of shit that i cannot believe nintendo allowed to release to market. Absolutely terrible directional control that registers multiple directions at once when you press it. 3rd party chink controllers have a better dpad than that shit. It's a shame bc everything else about the switch pro controller is super super good, arguably one of the most ergonomic 1st party controllers for any console on the market rn (in 2nd place after the ps5 controller).

But that was just Nintendo's bullshit excuse. The reality of the situation was, people got a Wii for Wii Sports and MAYBE New Super Mario Bros, then let the thing collect dust/weight down paper. I got a Famiclone. It was $11. Looks pretty neat due to how slim it is, all video reviews say it has the nicest d-pad and screen of all the Famiclones. Thought I would buy it now since it's the cheapest I've ever seen it, and the 11.11 sale only reduces it by fifty cents while there's only a few left. I'd rather pay the extra fifty cents now and get one than wait and find the cheapest one is like $18 again.

The company Powkiddy commissioned to make the circuitboards for their RGB20S then sold the circuitboard design to whoever made the R35S. Powkiddy shit the bed and got every store to pull them/report them/stop selling them. A store can get into trouble for selling the R35S now.
In response, the company who made the R35S then got whoever made Anbernic's circuitboards for the RG353VS (could have been the same PCB company, I don't know) to sell them the design to make the R36S.
Anbernic is a far larger company than Powkiddy, tenfold, but it seems they have lost all of their affluence/influence recently. Normally the R36S would have been shitcanned faster than the R35S was but, it's allowed to just exist and Anbernic can't do shit about it. It also seems like the R33S, which everyone is calling a Miyoo Mini + clone, uses the RG35XX's circuitboard, not the MM+'s. This company is just undermining Anbernic and nobody cares.

A good rpg doesn't have any of the following;
- Prenumbered goals. "You must light the four towers!" "You must defeat the eight gyms!" "You must save the seven princesses!" etc, even if they throw curve balls and prevent you from seemingly completing them in a pre-determined order.
- Silent protagonist. Like >>10399954 said, unless your character can't talk for a good reason, it's awful and lazy.
- Little to no strategy. If it's just rock-paper-scissors styled "my type beats your type" or less, it's mindless shit for literal children.
- No choices. A good RPG has some choice in it, even if it's just choosing which party members you have alongside you and getting their unique dialogue, or the game having two endings which is determined right at the end of the game. SOME choice is better than none.
- The tired, "YOU WERE WORKING FOR THE BAD GUYS ALL ALONG OH NO" plot twist. Especially when it comes to Japan and Christianity (whoooooooa, the witches are the good guys and the angels are the bad guys, whoooooooa). It's not good. It's not smart. The first time I even recall something like it, Disgaea 1, the moment you saw an Angel outside of Flonne it was so fucking blatantly obvious and boring.

Genuine question, why did Retro Dodo gets so angry at the RG35XX for not being a micro console? I've done research on em since I was considering picking one up, and at no point in any of the marketing did I ever see something mentioning the system's size in any way. Just meant to be a gameboy pocket form factor.

I'll grant it's not a perfect system, but he put it on a list behind the Playdate and the Thumby. Does anyone actually seriously even play those kind of proprietary consoles that only run tiny community-made games, or do they just buy it for a display piece 'cause you're a quirky little gamer boy

Not that long and storied, IMO. The first mainstream handheld was the classic Gameboy, and even that had long form games after a couple years on the market. GBC doubled that, and GBA's entire "AAA" library was long form.

I get digging retro vibes and design philosophies, but I don't think "being low investment" is one of the thigns most people fondly look back on.

ISonic Chronicles was made during the couple of years where SegaSammy Holdings started outsourcing their IPs and licensed franchises to third parties, the most infamous being their dealing with GearBox. Sonic Chronicles was commissioned by BioWare JUST as the EA buyout of BioWare happened, EA had them attempt to funnel as much funds as possible from Sega while delegating the game's development to some fucking newfounded mobile sector of BioWare who's only previous work was, I kid you not, a fucking 1:1 clone of these fucking old smart phone choose your own adventure college sex drama dime a dozen games featuring Mass Effect stories vaguely based off of the inaccurate novels.
The game was a mess from start to finish. From the get go, they exclusively used old Archie Comics (Ken Penders shit) as influence and THE VERY FIRST FUCKING INTERACTION OF THE GAME IS A FUCKING COLLEGE SEX DRAMA INTERACTION WITH AMY, where she claims she's now dating an imaginary guy named Dexter as an attempt to make Sonic jealous, but you're defaulted into one of two options because you don't have enough renegade/paragon points to say the snarkier options. You drag the Sonic character around on a fucking blurry jpeg, improperly scaled to the DS's screens resolution map SLOWLY from point A to point B to point C to point D. The project was so fucking horrific that the original sound designer fled it and took all of his work with him, so the fucking mobile BioWare division went on the internet and literally, literally, just downloaded midi remixes fans made of old Sonic songs from VGmusic. Every single fucking track in the game is documented on which VGmusic download it was ripped directly from. Most of the character art is literally poorly traced Sonic X promotional stills with jpeg and transparent pixel artifacts on them. "FAST BASED COMBAT" = slowest RPG of all fucking time, even worse than Gen4 Pokemon;

RG35XX feels better except for the d-pad. The RG35XX has tenfold better face and shoulder buttons, and feels more comfortable to hold while resting your finger on the shoulder buttons.
The R36S has significantly more power and capability for less money, and a far better d-pad, plus the analog sticks allow you to play literally the entire PS1 library and somewhat play DS, PSP, DreamCast, and N64, which the RG35XX can't feasibly do.
At this point I do recommend the R36S over the RG35XX, but if you only care about up to 32-bit systems and really want a more comfortable experience, the RG35XX is worth it.
