The Genesis had a much faster CPU than the SNES did, so little things like screen transitions could happen faster in a lot of games. One of the other benefits to this was that games that had a lot of sprites onscreen at the same time (like sports games with two full teams worth of players) ran significantly better on it.

If you go by raw CPU horsepower Nintendo has (with one potential exception) never had the most powerful console in any console generation, and most of the time they have actually had the weakest console in each generation. They make their sales off of first party software, not high fidelity graphical capability. They know people will buy anything they release since it will be the only place to play Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Pokemon/etc. Because they don't focus on raw system power they can use cheaper components, which makes them the only manufacturer to consistently sell their consoles at a profit from launch, instead of having each new system be a loss leader with profits subsidized by software sales until manufacturing costs can be lowered partway through the generation with manufacturing changes (as in new models, like the PSOne and PS2/Xbox 360 Slim, as examples).

> NES
Slower than the Master System

> SNES
Slower than the Genesis and Neo Geo

> N64
This is the potential exception, unless you consider the Dreamcast to be 'in between' the 5th and 6th generations (it released less than two years after the N64 did and had far more multiplats with the PS1 and N64 than it did with the PS2/GC/Xbox), in which case it is slower than the Dreamcast. If not this is the only console generation where Nintendo's entry has had a faster CPU than its competitors.

> Gamecube
Slower than the Xbox, lacks many of the graphical capabilities of the PS2

> Wii
Slower than the PS3 and 360

> WiiU
Slower than the PS3 and 360 (not a typo)

> Switch
Slower than the PS3 and 360 (also not a typo)

It's completely different from what their competitors do, but it has worked out for them each time.

no. the Master System has a faster paper CPU speed however the NES uses a 6502 which has higher IPS. most Master System games feel rather sluggish.

This isn't fair because the Master System released years after the Famicom originally released in Japan. The Famicom was more powerful than its contemporaries, the ColecoVision, Atari 5200 and the SG-1000.

Revisionist history if I ever heard it. Reminds me a lot of Wii-era apologists whom I would have mocked back in the day. The SNES was not an entire generation behind the Genesis, if it were anywhere similar to the Wii or Wii U, then Nintendo would have released the NES in 1991 and be competing with the Genesis and NeoGeo. But they weren't. The SNES was comparable if not superior in some parts to it's competition. You can't say the same with the Wii/U/Switch, even though graphics are meaningless and worse graphics = better games.

>> No.10386231

>>10386173
>This isn't fair because the Master System released years after the Famicom originally released in Japan

About that...

> NES
> Released 7/15/83 in Japan

> Master System
> Released 10/20/85 in Japan

> Difference: 828 days

> Genesis
> Released 10/29/88 in Japan

> SNES
> Released 10/21/90 in Japan

> Difference: 722 days

The difference between the release gap of the NES and Master System was only a little over three months longer than the difference between the Genesis and the SNES. This is doubly funny when you remember that the Genesis was more powerful than the SNES was.

Daily reminder that a group in Taiwan managed to take apart the Takara fighting games engine for the Gameboy (and GBC) and created a whole bunch of bootleg weirdness.

My favourite probably being Soul Falchion:
https://youtu.be/JMXuNSGwykk?feature=shared

It's essentially a port of Last Blade from NGPC to GBC, the music is lifted from other games (think there's some Megaman tunes there?), the characters are renamed rather stupidly, but it's actually decent, it's smooth and fun to play on an actual device.

Read the comment I was replying to, somalian. He's putting the SNES and N64 on the same list as the fucking Wii and Wii U. Was the SNES and N64 an entire GENERATION behind the competition?, no, they weren't. Nintendo used to compete evenly with other companies, now they don't. But it isn't about graphics, it's all about the games, and that's why the Switch is obliterating hardware 10x more powerful than itself.

>> No.10386489

>>10386246
The point of the list is that Nintendo has never (with one potential exception, as pointed out) had the most powerful hardware in a generation. It then lists each Nintendo console from each hardware generation as evidence for the claim the post is making.

Maybe you should spend less time sucking Miyamoto's cock and more time working on your reading comprehension, son.

Yeah honestly I was impressed with it, they also updated King of Fighters to the rosters from newer games (including boss characters) around the same time this was released and the game came with a new, working SGB border.

Other than that there's the Final Fantasy X demake for the NES, Pokémon Yellow also for the NES (already mentioned ITT), Metal Slug for the GBC (Terrible 9/11 I think it was called), some quality shit out there.

No joke. Honestly if those dudes have been born a few decades later they'd probably be cranking out indie darlings right now and making a shitload of legitimate money on Steam/EGS/gog/etc instead of slaving away making knockoff games for weak hardware that got sold at sidewalk stalls or out of car trunks and survive today only as a curiosity.

the color palette is 20% less by the three color modes.
the three button controller was good for the time by having more arcade style games
the less ram isn't wasted on pcm so more can be used on games
the expansion port is perfect for expansion and did a lot more than the satellaview for example and had a lot of things the snes didn't had like a modem
and mode 7 could be copied by software and the background layers used less tiles, just being a reprogrammed use of tiles instead of the total tile quantity on the mega drive.
aside from color palette and ram the genesis had better specs everywhere else.
