Just watched the review, it looks like yet another missed opportunity. Some things are great, other things (screen too big, sticks don't have enough room) horrible, if only they fixed some of the issues before releasing.
On the other hand, it looks cheap and ergonomic. I was thinking about acquiring the RG353P, but this might be a better option. And maybe CFW may squeeze the CPU. What do you think?

NTA but from my experience with the Odin Lite it's a pretty fine chip for "budget" mid-tier devices. You will want to use the higher performance modes when available for more demanding systems like the PS2 and GC, and it is worth mentioning that its a chipset that will benefit from the use of fans. But its capable of 1.5x/2x resolution with some GC games provided you use Dolphin's MMJR build, and so far I can get full speed with some games likes like Maximo and Fatal Frame 1 on AetherSX2. And while it really veers more on non-retro, I got 3-4x resolution with Silent Hill Origins and Wipeout PSP. It's a capable little chipset.

I don't think the people excited for the Arc understand how much of a monkey paw it is. You finally get a Sega style handheld with no sticks and it's:

Severely underpowered, can't handle DC fighters, very little Saturn.
D-pad might end up a disaster, and if it does, sales will tank meaning no follow up with real chip.
Might be overpriced because Anbernic, sells poorly, chinks take it as no demand.

Or they're all just shills, IDK.

At most all you have to do to a GBC to make it "up to date" is a rechargable battery pack and an IPS mod, and after that you'd have literally the most accurate GBC gameplay possible. FPGA emu is just the new snake oil to sell to purists who're willing to spend three digits on a console hat already has 100% flawless emulation with no input delay, and no actual quantifiable differences from real hardware outside of vague notions of "it just feels so much better"

FPGA only stands to actually be useful if we reach a point where you can FPGA a console that doesn't emulate perfectly, like gamecube and above, but the tech is always a few generations behind emulation so it's unlikely that's gonna happen anytime soon. The only FPGA hardware that actually seems useful is that N64 Analogue is making, but considering they charge $250 for a console that maxes out at GBA, I'm dreading the pricetag an FPGA N64 is gonna have.

IMO playing DS games on RG353PS is strictly for masochists because it doesn't have touchscreen. N64 is pretty bad too, the emulators for Linux are bad and break some popular games like Rayman 2, not to mention the performance is worse than Draemcast. I want both the RP2S and the RG353P. I can only afford one at the moment and I'm torn. The RP2S is already on sale, and looking at the product available from both companies I feel like Retroid will likely stop selling the 2S before Anbernic stops selling the RG353 series, meaning there's a chance I'll miss out on the 2S.
But I much prefer the 353P form factor, and I've heard Android devices are harder to get working than Linux, meaning the 353P will take me less work to get playing. It might be the more gratifying short term pick while I save for the 2S.
This shouldn't be such a hard decision. Will the RP2S stay on sale until 11/11? Well I get a chance to think it over while both devices are on sale?

>Which games did you have trouble with?
Well, like you said N64 is in a very, very poor state. Somehow people are okay with Glide64 having really bad lighting and stutters. DC fell short for 2D fighters even on Android where DC runs better, which was incredibly disappointing as it was THIS close to smooth full speed. 3D stuff is generally unmanageable, called it a day early on there.

I just finished Rayman 3D on my New 2DS XL.
I gotta say, this port leaves a lot to be desired. In every other version Rayman loses a bit of health after falling into a pit/lava/poisonous water and respawns at the last checkpoint. Non-lethal hits from enemies and environment hurt him too. If he loses all health, you restart the entire section with half of his max health. In this port he doesn't lose health, his health is refilled instead for some reason. This gets rid of any sense of challenge and makes the game ridiculously easy except for the very final sections. Red lums are basically pointless now, it's a waste of time to collect them because you'll be running at max health all of the time anyway. It's my biggest gripe with this port. Performance on the "Old" 3DS systems is also pretty bad, but that can be fixed with CPU overclock on the "New" 2/3DS (XL). And there are more bugs and jank than I remember from the Dreamcast version, though that could be tied to the overclock as well because my game even crashed on time. The music sounds good, it's leagues ahead of the DS port. Why did they remove the Globox village though?
All in all, I'd much rather play the Dreamcast version again on a chinkheld that can emulate it decently or even on a Vita than this.

Do yourself a favor and set up daijisho as your default home app. You'll have to point it towards your roms and installed standalone emulators/retroarch cores depending on the system you're playing, but once you get it set up, it will feel like a linux handheld frontend, like emulationstation.

It's kinda crazy there's no real guide on setting up Android with so many chinkhelds using it. Like yeah, sure, you have the barebones 'here's the emulators you download' thing from RGC but that hardly softens the blow for someone new. You'd have to drill them on how to set up a file manager and FTP, frontends, sourcing apps, etc.

if you can do repairs there's hinge replacements online or you can send it to Nintendo. Opening any kind of DS up is a huge pain, you have to take the whole thing apart.

Yeah, they're fine. I think they're bundled rather than downloaded, so they might be a tiny bit outdated. Select Mixplorer too, that will be your controller friendly file manager and FTP server. You can also rerun the setup wizard from Handheld Settings later without wiping the device, pretty handy.

Yeah, RA houses most of the emulators you'll want and makes scaling and aspect ratio a lot easier, with only a few select standalones outperforming them like Redream (DC) or Mupen FZ (N64). Setting it up and getting used to it is a bit of a pain, true, but at the end of the day you're just launching games from the frontend anyway.

keep in mind you might have to run a modified os.rom on your flashcart

many faggy chinese r4 sellers put a "timebomb" on their carts effectively making them stop working unless you time travel on your console back to a different date
or run a custom "timebomb-less" OS (usually uglier but whatever)

they do this to sell the same r4 cart repeatedly to dumbasses overseas

i have the r4 gold
and whatever the black one is called
one of them works with the 3ds
if you have a dsi
you wont need a flashcard whatsoever
you can install the titles directly onto your homescreen like a 3ds

Eh, I was somewhat mistaken. Looking at the official Anbernic store, RG353P costs $119.99 with free shipping by 4PX. Retroid Pocket 2S costs $99 but you have to pay at least $15 for 4PX shipping. So yes, that makes RP2S $5.99 cheaper than RG353P IF we go by the official prices. Thing is, now I've looked at Ali and RG353P is way cheaper there and sells for way below the official Anbernic price ($90 with free shipping), which makes it cheaper than RP2S. So it's not all as clear-cut as it seems. Still, I feel sorry for anyone who buys RG353P from the official Anbernic store for that price right now.

No screen issues (yet, I hear the adhesive gets weak when it warms up too much and will just start to peel off during gameplay, which may take a few hours of use to do), but my L2 button is really stiff. I hope I can take it out and maybe sand it down or something to make it match the R2 button. It registers when I press it, but it doesn't move or click in.

Miyoo Mini v1 and v2 had the original 640x480 screens. The v3 from June 750x560's was pretty bad and kept falling out, while so far the v4's 750x560 seems to be a better screen and hasn't had any falling out issues yet, even when people rip the screen protector off attempting to take the screen with it. It seems like the v3 was a truly shitty attempt to make more of the original ones, and the v4 fixes the v3's issues (except for the screen resolution being 750x560 but the old screens are just no longer available, anywhere, and haven't been produced in years. Miyoo's too small to commission a manufacturer to start producing those old screens again. 99% of these chinkhelds rely on already made parts except for the PCB and shell design). God damn were some of those v3 batches fucking awful. I almost feel bad for everyone who stayed up for hours every night waiting for a split second opportunity to buy one.

I was up late, drunk, while watching my roommate play Starfield on October 19th checking the status on my R35S order when I saw they had like 200 blue and 200 black Miyoo Mini in the store and impulsively bought one. They were still available an hour after I bought it, probably due to all the rumours around the V4 being worse than the V3 with its falling out screens and poorly molded buttons, but the V4 seems to be the best model yet. They even added two way USB-C charging.
When I realized what I had done I went to cancel the order, but Miyoo had already marked it as shipped (even tho it didn't have a tracking number yet). I was originally planning to resell it but now I kinda want to keep it.

You also shouldn't be worried about getting "THE ONE" unless you're a consuming fucking faggot who only gets a dopamine hit from the purchasing of coveted/popular products. You should get a device that plays the games you want to play, for the price you want to pay, in the form factor you want them in. If you're only looking for emulation up to PS1, we're basically past that point. I like to believe that it could still happen, I love the Deck's 7" screen but it can be pretty bulky to throw in a bag and travel with. But I think Valve is worried the most about releasing handhelds that are battery efficient, so it'll be a while before that happens. Plus something like the original Ayaneo Air really shows the concessions made to make a really "portable" Windows PC, with a 5.5" screen and a 28wh/38wh battery. And the Loki Zero isn't much better when you need to turn up the wattage to have performance in a similar benchmark.

Had my transparent red Analogue Pocket for awhile. It's become my daily driver, figured I'd post opinions from someone who's played a lot of chinkhelds and actually plays vidya instead of putting these things on shelves.

>Great
Screen is god tier, as a lot of people have said. Everything from Gameboy to OpenFPGA looks amazing on it. I'd argue it rivals my Switch OLED in quality. Just not as saturated and of course no true blacks.

>Good
Controls. It has that issue with the dpad where if you lean hard you can press diagonals with just the directionals. It's not a game breaker, but it has bothered me a little. Other than that, buttons are great in terms of feel and thanks to FPGA there's minimal lag.

>Mid
OpenFPGA naturally has its limitations. I don't use save states or turbo in vidya but I can see how the lack of turbo and I've heard risk of states corrupting would turn people off. Also sucks there's no PSX support but again, limitation of the chip. I only bring it up because naturally even cheap chinkhelds can emulate PSX. If by some miracle the Pocket got PSX it would be perfection

>God awful
Analogue themselves. Pocket is the perfect example of a shit company having a great product. Their support via email takes weeks, you can't buy spare parts for self repair and their support for the Pocket itself is ass. The community has done more for the device than Analogue themselves could hope to do. Hoping they keep their word about OpenFPGA filters by end of year but I'm not holding my breath.

Overall solid console. I wouldn't say it's worth the asking price, maybe knock 50-70 off it and it would be but definitely enjoyable to use and I've already gotten my money's worth. Definitely not for everyone and I don't mean that in elitism, I just know majority are fine with chinkhelds and I get the hatred towards this device.

Pic related, autistic enough to have shiny hunted on this thing. Camera's flash fucked the brightness of the screen, looks much brighter in person.

It's novel, but not usable for me - it's just too small. On the other hand, I did get a MM+ eight months ago as the first and last third party emulation device I ever plan on getting, and I have no complaints. The battery power indicator isn't always totally accurate, but that's a small quibble in the grand scheme of things. I bought a 128GB micro sd card for it due to it being able to play Mega CD and PlayStation titles and regret nothing.
>>10378291
It's still very overpriced for what it is, and the ergonomics are so-so to me. But really, the price is the damning thing. For example, I think my 60 USD MM+ can play all the platforms the AP can, but can also play PS games. The MM+ screen is very admirable as well.
>I just know majority are fine with chinkhelds
Is the AP not a chinkheld? It was still manufactured in China, subject to QC issues, and aesthetically feels right at home as a third party knock off device. And of course, the webm related turned meme.

Maybe? The actual playing experience is a bit rubbish on the 3DS, in regard to platforms like the GBA or SNES. But I realize that may be due to my use of a non-'New' 3DS model. I've heard the experience is a lot better on those slightly beefed up models, but I wouldn't dare play something like SNES/GBA titles on my unit. That being said, it having the DS and 3DS libraries are more than enough to make a 3DS worth owning. When you say GBA SP clone do you mean a emu device that's shaped like a GBA, or an actual GBA hardware clone? Because there was a cheap one sold in Russia back in 2016 called the Exeq GAMEBOX that can actually play cartridges, but I have no clue if that's even made these days or if they're worth the purchase.

Just give me an improved RG353V form factor with RP2S's SoC/hall sticks/analog triggers and I'll be finally pleased, enough juice to play N64 and Dreamcast comfortably and the occasional light 6th gen game here and there. The RG353V has been my main portable driver for quite a bit because it's just that comfy to take away and play while lying on the bed.
