The first time I beat this game was in 2010. Back then, I didn't earn my own money, so I had to play it on an emulator on the keyboard. Still, the game is so great I actually was mesmerized.

Now, 13 years later, I decided to play it again bc of the Master Collection being recently released. I still had to use a keyboard (my controller is broken rn).

IMHO, it's hard to believe this game came out in the PS1 era. It's simply a masterpiece. Everything about it is simply perfect: the narrative is great, the gameplay works very well (this in a time developers barely knew how to make 3rd person shooters for consoles), the level design is superb, the balancing and timing of the game is perfect. The game constantly knows how to capture your attention and is always throwing something new.

And the attention to detail, man... How does a PS1 game have so many details? From Snake's body armor being visible on his model to him catching a cold. This level of detail was unheard of back then.

This game is constantly considered the best PS1 game, and I agree. By a very large margin

Agree on the level of detail. I'm still genuinely impressed at seeing characters' breath in the outdoor environments. The way it weaves player instructions with narrative cutscenes is pretty cool, too. Having a sort of convoluted plot with a wide array of different characters, it sort of makes me think it was designed to be a "social" game, but instead of like the first Zelda where people were meant to talk about what to do and where to go, they wanted people to talk about the plot details and themes.

The problem is the core gameplay. It's simply kind of ass outside of the VR missions. Once you've played MGS enough to remember all the gimmicks and all the story beats, you're left with nothing but pure gameplay and it's not that good frankly. Not even in boss fights. Only the VR stuff is good.

1 and 2 have some of the best gameplay ever besides classic Resident Evil. Every single area is carefully crafted for the gameplay, and to have multiple ways to solve every situation as well as tons of challenges to take on once you have beaten it.

The gameplay is looking at a radar and avoiding dots. The radar usually gives you more information than the zoomed in camera view they went with for cinematic reasons. MGS1 is a game that's only fun due to gimmicks that it throws your way basically every 10 minutes. But gimmicks are only fun once, that's why they're gimmicks. So MGS1 leaves a strong first impression but the more you play it the more you realize it kind of sucks. I'm telling you this as a lifelong MGS fan.
MGS2 on the other hand has solid stealth gameplay, the AI is fun to play around with.

I have a theory MGS1 basically appeals to people who like the fantasy of being a secret agent, but don't really like stealth games.

I disagree. I’ve been playing through the series and was shocked with how clunky 3 felt compared to the first 2. The combat was never anything to write home about, but in 3 it’s way worse. Really, everything feels more clunky which surprised me considering how everyone usually praises Wrath of Heaven. About the only thing I like more is the level design, but even then it can be really nonsensical. So far the first game is my favorite.

>> No.10379393

Fair, maybe I'm just remembering 3 wrong. I just remember 1 having some weirdness with hit detection on the grappling hook and two having some weird issue with enemies disappearing and making it impossible to get the highest rank or something. I should probably go through the series again myself.

>> No.10379421

>>10379393
Oh they definitely have those issues, 3 just had them worse in some areas which genuinely surprised me. Like, the hit detection is way worse in 3 and the enemies just aren’t fun at all to fight like they could be in 1 and 2. 2 has the worst grappling hook, but 3’s doesn’t feel as good as 1’s.

1’s ost is also king and might be one of my favorite vidya ost’s ever. Wrath of Heaven still isn’t a necessarily bad game, but 1 and 2 just set such a high standard that I was expecting to be blown away by 3 and found it quite a bit more disappointing than the previous entries.

>> No.10379610

I think MGS1 is almost like an adventure game with certain predetermined solutions in mind with punishing consequences for failure but multiple routes. It's served well by its simplicity since it involves relatively little waiting or guesswork compared to its sequels. Even the "waiting" parts in these games generally entails using your scope and carefully surveying your environment, so it isn't like you put the controller down.

>> No.10380557

>>10378852
No... The camera is 'zoomed in' so you don't unnaturally see everything and it isn't too easy. The environments are also usually smaller than later games. There are no gimmicks, since every weapon and item has a core use and secondary uses to figure out. There are multiple ways to sneak through areas using different methods, and tons of ways to impose challenges to make for tons of replay value. It's pretty much perfect in terms of gameplay. If it's not for you and you prefer 2, that's fine, I prefer 2 as well but 1 is still an amazing game.

Same here. It takes a second to sort of “get” Tenchu, but when you do you really feel like a ninja. It’s weird how fast the game can feel at times too. Wrap all that up in a 10/10 atmosphere and ost and you have a really amazing game.

You’d be correct. First time I played MGS4 I was horribly let down from a gameplay standpoint as you could just blast through it on normal difficulty. Going for hard difficulty right off the bat is the way to play it though. You actually have to use all the mechanics and study the levels and the best routes to take to get through them. It makes a game that could be beaten in under an hour stretch to quite a bit longer than that.

Honestly, just take your time. Watch the guards movements carefully. Learn how to run up behind guards, then stop moving completely. This is a lot easier using a d-pad rather than an analogue stick. You have stop your movement so you can go directly into a choke-hold. Learn the rage of your choke-hold so you know what distance you can approach from. You don't want to run into guards from behind.
Once you get comfortable with that, you can do a little trick to "increase" your choke-hold range; run up behind the guard, punch him ONCE from behind. His model will deflect BACKWARD towards you even though you hit him from the back. Immediately after connect the punch, press the choke-hold button, and you will grab the guard. The "punch-grab" is useful because you can do your choke-hold using a punch's range. The choke-hold is the best way to kill/stun guards quickly.
Ultimately the best confrontation is no confrontation at all. Sneaking past guards, rather than eliminating them is almost always the faster easier option.

Also consider having 2 save files per-run. One file where you can be as sloppy as like just to troubleshoot and explore all the possibilities in an area. This is your "fun" file.
The 2nd file is your "serious" file where you apply the experience you learned from the "fun" file and try to get the best possible outcome in one go.

Yeah. Indeed the game keeps track of your time and your kill-count. At the end of the game you get ranked on your performance. To get the best rank you need to have the shortest time with the least amount of deaths.
