Famicom Disk System.

Which games are must plays/have if you can actually play it? Keeping in mind that I don't speak/read Japanese.

If you claim a game that is available on cart, then what would make the disk version better to play vs the cart?

>> No.1033846

The FDS version of Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa has better music than the cart version.

>> No.1033985

-Arumana no Kiseki (Castlevania-esque Indiana Jones game)
-Kiki Kaikai (prequel to Pocky & Rocky)
-Nazo no Murasame Jo (Zelda-style samurai game)
-Otocky (weird rhythm/shmup? game, think 2D REZ)
-SMB2J, the hardest Mario game of all time
-Famicom Detective Club series (horror/mystery adventure games, probably won't like it unless there's a translated version out there...)

And of course the superior versions of games that got ported to NES, like Metroid, Castlevania, etc.

Thanks, brosef

>> No.1034812

The Disk System version of the 2 fisrts Zelda games are arguably superior to the cartridge versions.
You should give them a look.

>> No.1034856

>>1034812
In what way are they better? Does the music sound better?

>> No.1034871

>>1034856
It's a matter of preference. Many Japanese players prefer the FDS sound, while many western players prefer the normal sound.

The only difference are sounds/music by the way. I think I prefer the cartridge version solely because it sounds less awkward.

Also, another FDS game you might want to get is the original Metroid, which has a save system unlike the NES version. It does have some loading and no Justin Baily code.

you know, outside of japan, both the games and the disk drive are going to be hella expensive, and even then it might not actually work and you will have to buy replacement parts. Why not just emulate. If you say AUTHENTICITY in this case you are more of a moron than those people that sit and argue about CTR displays all day long

I think the FDS version sounds better, but everything seems a bit off, like the music isn't syncing up to the game or something

Ai Senshi Nicol is also a great game, and is entire in engrish despite the title.

OP here
I'm using the N8 everdrive to play them

In that case, I don't think the sounds will work very well. Most FDS games used extra sound channels, which the original NES doesn't support for the same reason it doesn't support external sound chips.(missing pins)

>> No.1034906

>>1034903
the games my not work at all actually, since they are disk images and not rom files

>> No.1034914

>>1034906
Nah, they work with the N8. It even supports FDS flipping.

I'm not sure if the Famicom version of the N8 supports extra sound channels for the FDS. I'm pretty sure it doesn't with soundchip games like Akumajou Densetsu and Gimmick! though.

>> No.1037137

>>1034914
It supports them, badly. So far (from a test video mind you) the N163 seems to be the only one working close to flawlessly. everything else seems to be missing or broken terribly, like the VRC6...

I honestly don't see why people already think it's better that the powerpak. It's GOING TO BE, but at the present state, it's shit.

>>1033770
when I made my thread a few days ago someone suggested "Electrician". Played it in Nestopia (FDS is supported if you have the BIOS), and it's pretty fun.

Kaettekita Mario Brothers is the absolute best version of Mario Bros. on the NES / Famicom. It is a must own, and was only available from the famicom disk writer service.

It featured new levels, more arcade like sprites, the ability to change directions in mid air, and high score saves.

>the ability to change directions in mid air
what? the game wasn't designed around that being part of the mechanics though. why would you want that? it's like how it is universally regarded that the all-stars compilation is inferior to the original because of the altered physics.

Falsion. Has fucking amazing music and optionally can use the Famicom 3D System addon.

I've had a really difficult time with this game. I cannot seem to grasp the timing/depth of enemy ships. I'd probably do better in 3D, but as it is I find the arcade version of Gradius 3 easier.
