Dreamcast only had 1 stick and 2 shoulder buttons, so you can make it so dpad=stick and L2+dpad=dpad.
The dpad either mirrored the stick, or was just items and Map and such. This means you really don't need a stick at all. The only ps1 game that needs sticks is ape Escape.

What ever happened to the GCW Zero? I remember I wanted one because of the prospects of people developing cool games for it. People mainly got obsessed with being able to emulate on it though which I think overshadowed the original games. I'm mainly wondering why nobody has attempted something like that again but with a modern portable device like the one in OP.

Reminds me of the PGS(portable gaming solutions) and getting hyped for the gp32 after discovering its homebrew scene. It's over, you missed it, there will never be a homebrew scene like there was in the 2000s/early 2010s. Everything today is just porting over emulators and porting over clone games, there's rarely a game worth a shit made for these emulator handhelds, anymore. The gp32 has quite the interesting set of stuffs. Flesh chasmer and the Fenix runtime games are so weird and unique, plus its own original games like kimchi men, mill, her knights, little wizard, diehard infinite stairs and tomak are great. Don't get me wrong the gp32 had clone ports galore, but it was the first console of it's kind and still boasts the most ports and clones than any console, on top of the most homebrew originals.

How come companies don't do a normal stick for the left but one of those tiny little nubs for the right like what 3DS did? Or maybe even PSP? I figure that seems like a good setup. So imagine Vita left stick but nub right stick.

You're going to want something with a touch screen for DS games unless you're using an emulator that lets you easily hold down an L2/R2 button and use the right analog stick for touch controls. The RG35XX can't run DS games anyway, not that you would want to unless you're exclusively playing games that only use the top screen and physical buttons.
The best for DS emulation without a touch screen would be the R36S, but even though it can do everything listed minus the touch screen itself, but still isn't the best overall. Sadly the only good vertislop is the RG405V but it's fucking huge and $150. At that point you're better off getting a horizontal handheld with a touch screen that can play DS screens side by side/rotate the handheld.

Your best bet in terms of sheer power is maybe an odin lite, though IMO their communication and QA is pretty bad. A good alt could be a Retroid Pocket 3+ or Pocket Flip, doesn't have 100% compatability but plays a good chunk of those libraries.

Overall though, there's no perfect option for what you're wanting in that price range. Options with enough power to do these things reliably with mass compatability are around $350+

I will say though, while not a handheld, if you wanna play these games for under $200 you can always learn console modding. An original wii and a fat PS2 would probably cost around $150 can be modded to play games off of hard drives, and since it's original hardware you're guaranteed compatability.

I have an RG353V. Is there any point in getting a handheld that's more powerful, like an RP3+ or a Retroid Flip, or should I just wait and see if anything actually interesting comes along in the future?

If you're wanting a power boost, I'd say go for it, sure. Though the Pocket 2S is a good bet these days, and costs about the same as a 353V.

You could do what I did before upgrading from a 353V to a 2S, ordered the 2S, played it for a week to see if I'd prefer it, then sell the 353V for like 90 bucks online to get most of my money back. Was easier for me to buy it when I considered it less "spending $150 on a new console" and more "spending $60 for an upgrade"

I can understand doing this with motor vehicles when their parts become obsolete and become too expensive to replace and maintain, but the biggest scam on consumerism is convincing people to "trade in" their working electronics for "an upgrade" when they ultimately get basically the same experience. the problem with linux devices is that they need a x86 architecture to be powerful which takes a lot more space than the arm chips found in smartphones, so usually when companies makes a handheld with phone parts wich are both smaller and more battery efficient than the x86 computer parts, they put android on it because it's their only option than doesn't really fucks performance
while all this is true, there is hope that more compatibility for linux comes to arm chip (there is also a program called box86 that enable x86 program emulation on android devices and linux arm devices, with promising looking perrformance) making this post obsolete in a few years, and for the time being android is heavily customizable so you can get it looking like a game console by using a frontend or just having custom icons and shortcuts

PSX is pretty easy, anything will run it well as long as it's not outright bootleg "Super game family 500 in one" shit.

What's more important is finding something with a good form factor. Sticks aren't too important since IIRC the only game that REQUIRES stick control is Ape Escape, but you're def gonna want something with stacked shoulder buttons. I've tried PS1 with lined up shoulders, and it's a nightmare.

Anbernic's 353PS may be your best bet. There's cheaper devices that can run PS1 fine, but non I'm aware of with dual sticks, stacked shoulders, and not awful build quality.

So the pros and cons between the 353PS and the Pocket 2S IMO is that the 2S is clearly more powerful and isn't much more expensive, but a linux-based device (like the 353 series) is incredibly easy to set up and use.

The way I see it, if you're willing to spend more time setting up and configuring, absolutely go with the 2S, but if you want something dummy easy to set up, go with a 353PS

Well, kinda. With the 353PS you're dealing with RK3566 retardation where the battery percentage is mostly guesswork and there's very little power management to speak of, so no real idling or sleeping. OpenGL support is dire too so while your games will emulate fine, shaders working is a coin flip, for instance the DMG and GBP shaders don't display properly.

I refuse to believe that Vita's CPU only runs at max clock speed of 444MHz. This has to be some sort of offset applied to the base clock, because there is no way it could run Dreamcast games as well as it does if that was its real clock speed. Only systems I can't play are Saturn, dreamcast, and higher end like ps2/gamecube. Everything else runs perfectly. Black Friday and the best deals of the year are coming up. I'm patient and I save tons of money in this regard. I'm not an all consuming mongoloid and I don't buy gimmiky crap.

As for my bluetooth gamesir. I haven't had a single issue with input-delay. Is it the premium option? Nah. I'll give you that. Probably getting a backbone or something eventually once it drops in price. I used to vouch constantly for the Razer Kishi V1

but suddenly out of nowhere it stopped connecting. Ive stated before DO NOT BUY A KISHI V1 because Razer has abandoned it. You can no longer update the firmware for it. And after searching online, I found hundreds of people dealing with the same scenario that I went through. But even that was only a 50$ loss that I got a year of play out of so.... kind of worth. If you're worried about damage, get an Anbernic RG35XX and then just buy a hard shell HDD case, since the miyoo and 35xx are damn near identical in size.

Here's the one I use, it's pretty good:

>clock only matters (generally speaking, I know there is UMM AKSHUALLY nuance and exceptions) when comparing across the same architecture.
I'm not using the clock to directly compare those two CPUs, the Vita is obviously more powerful. What I'm saying is that to emulate another device of different architecture you typically need something at least 10-20 as powerful and there's just no way that a CPU with only twice the clock rate is able to achieve that, no matter the IPC and other parameters. Hell, try clocking down a modern X86 laptop CPU to 400MHz and emulating Dreamcast and see how well that does. If a modern X86 CPU with excellent IPC cannot do it, then sure as hell an ARM SoC with A7 cores from 2011 can't do it either. I think VIta's CPU has a base clock rate of about 800MHz and then what you see in the overclocking menus is just clock boost added on top of it. One day I'm gonna get my hands on a Vita and write a simple benchmarking homebrew app to prove this.

I have an RF input sony crt, how bad would it look if I tried converting hdmi to RF? I actually prefer rf to all other inputs because of how blurry and grimy it looks. makes horror games look spookier.

Ambernic has a flip handheld coming too.
Guess we're gonna see miyoo vs ambernic but ambernic doesnt have analogs so it'll likely be cheaper.

A hardcase isn't required, but a glass screen's a glass screen no matter how nice the device, so if the intent is just throwing it into a bag you'll want something to stop it from getting scuffed up. At least get a little pouch or something

>let's replace everything except the shell and controls!
why? the analog slider on the psp is just bad. it doesn't have l2 and r2. rpi4 is really underpowered by today's standards, even $100 chinkhelds surpass it now. and I imagine that the cost of this mod is astronomical, rpi4 cms are overpriced enough by themselves, but you also have to factor in the cost of all of those pcbs and the new display. so in the end, you are paying more for less and massacring a completely good psp in the process, getting rid of the ability to play psp games, which rpi4 can't do. it's just awful.

at this point i think it's a bit silly to get an rp3+ despite still being the best all-around imo, but for the rp2s this is a good opportunity

they said a rp4 will come for the holidays before, so if you wanted a more powerful option than the t610-powered rp2s, i'd hold off

also for all the flip people not liking the two sliders, here's another max zhou troll post

there is no guarantee this thing will release, but an alternative to the miyoo

i don't like the sliders on the flip either, but there is some use in them for ps1, left stick can be used for some arcade if you're Reddit Game Uncle, or right stick can be mapped to dpad for lazy one-handed play

$80 for the board and another $50-90 for the compute module lol.
If he had used an Orange Pi module you would at least have gotten an RK3566, and much cheaper too.

Meanwhile CFW is free and perfectly capable of doing emulation.
