Well anon, if you don't like Sonic, there's always Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, NiGHTS Into Dreams, etc... They make more than one game. Maybe check out Ristar or Vectorman for a change.

If nothing else I'm glad you at least tried them, though. Most people wouldn't touch a game older than 2010.

This sounds like optimal game design. anyone with a brain will begin playing in a way that isn't frustrating, anyone with learning problems will just keep trying to shove a square peg in a round hole get filtered.

even if you're bad, since sonic doesn't kill you, a determined novice can begin improving their play immediately as soon as they exit hitstun. I'd rather a game accommodate those users instead of those who get offended and drop the game in a huff.

To me it's bad design, because you don't have to learn anything, the game lets you play anyway and you finish the game playing like shit because you can't do otherwise unless you memorize the levels and their hazards. I know this is probably bait, we have a "Sonic was never good/is fundamentally bad" thread pretty much every week now, to be honest there's one still up aside from this one (>>10338134) still... I feel that it's always important to consider that, among all of the bait threads, sometimes it really is just someone being honest and wanting to talk to people about what they think, then so be it.

What did you dislike about the series? I can see your experience was negative, but what were the reasons for it? I often hear people complain that you get punished for going fast and stuff, that you can't see far ahead and you get hit a lot, is it your case? If you didn't like the original trilogy, then I guess Sonic really isn't for you, and that's fine, though the 8-Bit titles are worth a shot still.

>> No.10371127

>>10371081
Those criticism are more or less what I think too. If it becomes much better on subsequent playthroughs, I still struggle to find a reason to replay a game I just played and hated.
I'll try to explain myself better: the character feels bad to control. Stopping every 5 steps to spin dash is tiresome. Pressing down to roll into things doesn't work most of the time since the hazards in the game are not always defenseless enemies (I'd say almost never actually), the camera is too close and you WILL bump into things. If it's an enemy, you lose your rings and retrieve some, nothing happened except you just got frustrated at the shit level design. If it's a wall, or an obstacle, you have all the time in the world to adjust to the situation and go through it. It's like you are just walking through the level, you are not overcoming anything, it's just a nuisance. The game is unironically slow as hell, one of the slowest platformers I've played. There's no flow.
Some other minor things include the special stages which are unfair as all fuck in Sonic 1 and 2 (3 is fine), water levels are obnoxious and exacerbate the problems I wrote above, the character design are some of the cringiest I've ever seen (Hyper Sonic, really? what the fuck is this Goku Blanco?), last stage + boss of Sonic 2 were frustrating as hell, and the first fight against metal sonic was pure trial and error. I guess there's more but that's what comes to mind now.
I like the music and some of the environments though (especially in Sonic 3K), but the game is just not good in my eyes. Every Mario I've played was better and incentivates more skilful play by just being a good game, not by promising one with an abysmal and frustrating first time through it

It really does become more fun and exhilirating the more you play, since you know more of the level design and also get a better feel for Sonic and his control... but still, me and a lot of other people that love Sonic did so the 1st time we've played, and it only got better the more we did, if you hated your 1st playthroughs I don't know if simply playing more will change your mind here.

Not every video game is for everyone no matter how popular it is, and that's fine really, though of course people can change their minds too. I don't think Sonic controls bad, though that's personal taste, I know, but he's very responsive, the main difficulty people have at first is that he carries a lot of momentum, but you'll get used to it, it's a matter of trying to not stop, keep the flow going.

You don't have to constantly stop to spin dash, it's a neat skill, especially when Sonic's already on a stand still for whatever reason, but if you're already moving then just keep going, Sonic builds up speed quite easily and the spin dash is mostly for short bursts since he loses speed quickly too. Of course pressing down to roll doesn't work all of the time, there'd be no challenge otherwise, but it works most of the time, and it builds up speed when rolling down slopes, so it's part of the fun. Early on you'll bump into walls often and stop, interrupting the flow, but even then you'll still have tons of exhilirating parts to have fun with, it's just that you only get to have non stop flow and speed if you get really good at it, just like any other video game out there really.

Sonic was made by SEGA, who are known for their arcade roots, Sonic follows an arcade philosophy of trial and error, getting better and going a little further each time, etc...

If that's not your thing, then Sonic won't be either, but for people that enjoy that arcade style, Sonic's as good as it gets. It's a shame you didn't enjoy it, but it is what it is I suppose.

Anyways, cheers!

You can pretty much replace Mario with any Nintendo franchise. It's getting tiresome. Even starfox gets praised like it's some godsend by nintendrones, luckily /vr/ zoomers are getting privy to PC space sims and starfox is being brought into the mix and praised accordingly.

You don't have to do the special stages if you don't want to. I usually skip them in Sonic 2 and 3K. I'll agree with you about Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2, mainly since it's the one stage where you get zero rings, even once you know what you're doing the final boss seems to take forever. Definitely give CD a try, people who don't like Sonic 2 usually tend to prefer it. The final boss is a cakewalk in comparison but that does not make it bad imo. I also prefer the Special Stages in CD, even got 100% in that game one time.

There is also a Neo Geo Pocket game called Sonic Pocket Adventure that retains the elements from the Genesis games but sort of remixes them in a handheld demake of sorts. You might also like the Sonic Advance games. 2 in particular is a lot faster if you just want more speed, but it is very challenging. So even though I am a rabid Sonic fan, we aren't that different, anon. If you like NiGHTS you might also like Sonic R, but I will say it's meant to be played like a racing game (it even has dedicated accel and sharp turn buttons), not a platformer.

sonic 1 is good but flawed. the lack of spin dash and level quality is all over the place. great music though (better than 2)
sonic 2 gets closer with spin dash, more consistent levels with speed and fun platforming sections. ending of the game is really weak though
sonic 3 & knuckles is of course as close to perfection as it could be. it blows open beautiful levels with varied palettes, varied sections, all kinds of new level mechanics, a simple but engaging story, and the best endings in any sonic game ever

the goal is to have fun, actually! if you're just here to consume the content then yeah you can do that, but you'll have a bad time if you don't try to learn or adapt. you'll just be getting hit over and over.

Like, if your point is "the game gives me the freedom to have fun and i'm willingly not taking it because i only care about reaching the credits" then i fail to see how that's the games fault. you only want the credits, you'll see them credits. it's giving you what you're ordering.
