ED64 Plus is a fine cheapo alternative to an Everdrive. Only game I can think of that doesn’t work on it is No Mercy, which is a worthy purchase despite its high price tag. Harvest Moon is fun. Ogre Battle is awesome. Even if you have played Super Mario 64 before, you should again, it’s awesome.

Is there a reason why? Emulation makes a lot more sense. It's easy and free and you don't have to worry about storage and maintenance.

N64 emulation is particularly imperfect. The cost of a system, several controllers, and a flash cart is pretty low, and plenty of good games have fair price tags if you want to go that route.

Personally I would say just buy a USB or bluetooth N64 controller instead and just emulate it. Like every cartridge console the files are extremely small, so you can download the entire English-friendly romset in the span of a few minutes, if even that. Once you've made it past the Mario and Banjo/Rare games and I guess Smash Bros, there's not really much else. Some people really like the Zelda games but I personally never got into them. Has some good racing games as well, mostly either first-party or by Midway.

Don't do it. It just isn't very interesting system. There are only a small handful of good games and even the better ones struggle to hold up today. I get it, I once tried to like system too, but there just ain't much to like. Just emulate.

I bought a N64 recently, but haven't gotten a flash cart yet. There's quite a few games off the top of my head that I want to play: Sin and Punishment, Operation Winback, Bomberman (both games), Chameleon Twist 1&2, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Star Soldier Vanishing Earth, Bangai-O, Knife Edge, F-Zero expansion, Sim City 64, Wonder Project J2, Fighters' Destiny 2, Ridge Racer, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Ogre Battle, Forsaken, Space Station Silicon Valley (with the patch), Pilotwings, the Extreme G series, Mischief Makers, Megaman Legends, Turok 1, maybe Turok 2. I had a N64 as a teenager and I've already played through most of the main titles back in the day. I'm mostly interested in Japanese only games or games that I missed or only rented. If you include the games that I've already played then there's quite a decent library of games to work through.

Mario Tennis, one of the most polished and refined games Nintendo published for the system. feels like it belongs to gamecube-era of mario spinoff games with its presentation and huge roster of characters including Waluigi and Daisy, exept without the gimmicks and superficiality of later Mario sports spin-offs.
seriously is the best tennis game of the era. I personally enjoy seeing an 'expanded mario universe' within the context of simple Nintendo 64 graphics, before nintendo got extra kiddie in the 6th generation, just look at Mario in the key art here, he's looking serious and badass. This game will seriously test your skills.

>Emulate instead

if you want an N64 you should definitely get one but i will also agree that N64 emulation can be good for its own reasons. if you're getting a real n64 then you'll also want a CRT tv or a retrotink to play on modern TVs and not have it look like shit.

i've got an n64 but just a small 13 inch CRT currently, so i usually emulate unless i'm playing multiplayer. sometimes the controls are a bit of a pain to bind but other than that i've had good experiences with emulation lately. nice to be able to upscale the games.

It all depends on the tv's scaler and input lag both of which have improved a lot over the years. You can get a fine picture out of many N64s hooked up to modern tvs. It's almost always preferable to *shudder* N64 emulation.
