This is so fucking good holy shit. Finished the first one and am halfway through II, just can't get enough of these games. Playing the Steam version, I set everything to Complete instead of Chronicles though. Do you guys like these games too? What other Ys games are essential? Ys thread, I guess

I'm sorry, but it's not that good.

The only other bumpyvania is Ys IV, which is outstanding and also a direct sequel to the first two games.

These games suck and look awful

Don't get gaslit

Can't really expect much from a developer who names his epic RPG franchise "Ys"

The soundtrack is like 80% of the reason why you play Ys.

The ones I played (which were the PSP ones) were sick, but I can't speak for the quality of the retro ones.

this
one of the best 16-bit games, fullstop

it's also 10+ hours, so not nearly as short as the other Ys games

I can't decide whether Ys II or Dawn of Ys is the peak of the series. The Nephilim engine games are okay, but I felt like they didn't have as much soul. Party based Ys lost me completely.

Is Ys I and II the most remade game of all time?

On the contrary, with the exception of the first game very unbalanced, they have aged remarkably well due to the simple controls, oldschool anime graphics, and fantastic soundtracks (PCE versions of the soundtrack are way better than Chronicles for the record).

I think something like Pac-Man or Donkey Kong still have more remakes but Ys is definitely up there, I think Ys 1 and 2 have been remade more times than DQ1 and 2

Early YS is an acquired taste
>shitty dungeons
>shitty gameplay
>shitty graphics
>with soulful music
>with soulful atmosphere
>with soul boxart
It's garbage like early DQ but unlike DQ it got a lot better later on

Not if you are playing the Windows remakes. Some of the most charming graphics I've ever seen in an RPG
>>shitty gameplay
Debatable, a lot of people refuse to give it a chance but once it clicks it becomes fun.
>>shitty dungeons
Agree with this though, the dungeons are shit, especially in the second game. Even the ones in Zelda 1 and 2 are better
>It's garbage like early DQ
As someone who loves simple RPGs without any bloat, I absolutely adore early DQ, even the Famicom/NES versions. There's a certain charm to those. Besides their box art, atmosphere and music are also amazing

Filtered. Ys II is one of the few JRPGs where the dungeons aren't shit and you can actually get lost.

>> No.10367850

>>10367747
The remake versions of I&II (Eternal, Complete, Chronicles) still have bump combat but it's fast-paced and analog directional instead of 4 direction so it's a lot more engaging since you can just run in at whatever angle lets you cut the enemy down. You and the enemies also move much faster. Big improvements over the originals.

That dungeon was a nightmare. I also find it to be pretty unique how the final dungeons of 1 and 2 take up like 1/4 of each game. I refused to use a guide and it took me hours to finish both Darm Tower and Solomon Shrine or whatever it's called
>and you can actually get lost
Well in that case they are good yeah

I fucking love Ys. If you like 1 and 2, consider watching the super low-budget OVAs, they're not great, but charming. Also, the ED song kicks ass.
Definitely play Ys 4: Dawn of Ys next. The original has Japanese voices with no subtitles but there's a (shitty) fandub patch. Alternatively, there's a remake called Memories of Celceta which is supposedly good, but I've never played it.
After 4, play Ys Origin. No more bump combat, but it's (in my opinion) the best one.
