this is true, especially when you're an obsessive who has to get 100% kills. e4m2 was the only level where i was better off from a pistol start.

i think e4m1 is harder to 100% than e4m2 but probably easier to just get to the exit, especially if you can grab the red key through the cage bars. although, e4m2 has the so-called Steffen Winterfeldt Jump but it's still a tricky level to exit even if you miss most of it out.

Where Doom had more of a slower paced horror aesthetic punctuated by moments of sheer terror Doom 2 took the rip and tear up to 11, at times bordering on slaughterfest. It's a simple fact that Doom had more thoughtful and cohesive levels, whereas with 2 they often feel thrown together and filler.

Tried playing Doom again (last time was when I was a kid) after seeing these threads and it didn't go very well. I went through Episode 1 on Ultra-Violence and everything was fun and all, but once I got to Episode 2 I started having ammo problems, and from I understand that issue just get worse. Here's the deal. Everyone until now thought that GOR2A0 (the sprite/decoration being shown in the pic) is just Mussolini's hanged-up body directly converted, but it's not. It's actually a mixture

Whoever did that sprite for the game mixed Mussolini's legs with the upper body of his mistress in turn, Clara Petacci; and then rearranged and retouched the b/w photo edit into the Doom palette

other wads active: dhtp, voxel pack
your skillz level: average
playstyle: mouselook, no autoaim
map difficulty: tricky, challenging
ammo quantity: low enough to keep you away from the SSG trigger unless it's really needed
secrets: 2: first one is really easy to find (bug?), 2nd one is a bit trickier

i really enjoyed this map, it's really beautiful, has some varied environments yet keeps some coherence, and the ammo quantity is low enough to keep you on the edge without having to measure every shot

advices: beware of corners (you can use them too). don't grab the big medikit right away, heal yourself with a berserker pack.

It's easy, but a *liiiiiitle* bit tricky. You may think that inserting the desired texture in your wad using SLADE does the job, but no no.

Right click your texture, go to "Gfx" and then click on "Add to Patch table" and "Add to TEXTUREx", if it tells you that it doesn't exist, then choose the option to create one

And that's it, it should show when you go to the texture window in Doom Builder, in the "YourWad.wad" section right above "Doom2.wad"

After reading up on how the BFG works, it seems janky as hell. Why not just have the flash's origin be the ball itself? If you nail a charging horde of monsters, they get zapped as it should, and if you miss with the ball, you get nothing. The only downside in the singleplayer sense is that it could be too easy to drop bosses without having to dance with them a bit.

There's a difference between what went through the heads of the game designers, and what players do with the finished game.
For example, nowadays strafing is the default. Back then it was something you did by holding down alt or whatnot.
It was thought of in an entirely different way.

I don't think it occurred to them that you'd hold down the run button. If it did, you probably wouldn't be going ~80km/h.

There's nothing wrong with it, cause it turned out great,
but the book really wasn't written on FPS design, or even gameplay, back when Doom was made.
It was a very young genre, and previous games were much more... cumbersome.

It seems extremely probable that they didn't see anything wrong with it specifically because they didn't thoroughly think about what the BFG would feel like when fired while running/spinning/etc.

IIRC the hint manual for Wolf3D included a tip from Romero, suggesting to use the mouse. I doubt M+KB became common until Quake, but it was a known control scheme from the beginning.

In case anyone's curious, I was just wondering about it because I was trying to do my first Chocolate Doom-based playthrough of Ultimate Doom, but wasn't sure if I /had/ to grapple with tank controls just to get the full 1993 experience.

Hmm, I don't know if any of you can help me, but I've been trying to import a new music file with XWE to replace d_runnin in my wad and it doesn't work. Well, it does work, but no music plays. I've tried with .mp3, .ogg and .it but none of these work. The piece of music I'm using just won't sound good on MIDI. I'm running the wad with GZDoom.
