Name some of your favorite games for this that aren't Oregon Trail, Odell Lake, Word Munchers, Number Munchers, Math Blaster, or other edutainment dreck.

A gorgeous Platinum //e. I have a ][+ myself because there are a few older games that won't run on a //c or //e. Here are the innards of my ][+

16 RAM card (check out that MS logo), serial card for transferring disk images, Videx 80-column card (good for text adventures and Eamon games), disk interface

on apple the games that I valued and remembered were ultima 4, zork 1, reforger 88

a game that I played a massive amount of, in spite of how bad it was, was one about a guy in a balloon, who traveled over a tar world (because the screen was black) and collected some kind of fuel resource while trading with the inhabitants.

You had to navigate as accurately as possible, because traveling around on the ground was dangerous or something

here I found the name of it

I so rarely get a chance to talk about my IIe with knowledgeable people, this is my setup. a platinum IIe with RGB out to a 1084s, it's got one of those korean mockinboard clones that works great with ultima IV.

What do you use the internal modem for? I used to lust after a Novation Apple-Cat II but cooled when I realized I would probably never use it for anything. Even my Videx card is a bit of a luxury but it really makes a difference for text games (the ones that support it anyway)

Pretty basic setup - Apple's standard 64K/80-col card that came preinstalled in the aux slot of all //e's, a super serial card, and a 5.25" controller.

Enough to make the machine useful though! Do you use the serial card for anything? Disk image transfers? Hell I even thought about using my ][+ as a terminal to a Linux or Unix box

Well you can conect the serial card to a serial port on a modern computer and transfer disk images back and forth, using a fuckawesome program called "ADTPro". You can download practically any game you can imagine from the Asimov ftp site (ftp.apple.asimov.net) and transfer that image to a real disk. If all you use your apple for is games then there's a fucking metric ton of games you can play!

Oh wow that sounds great! Any idea the name of that cord?

>> No.1035991

>>1035986

it's just a basic serial cord, male 25-pin on one end, female 9-pin on the other. you can hook it straight from the apple serial card to any modern computer with a serial port.. then download ADTPro and read through the instructions for getting started (obviously you have to first transfer ADTPro itself to a real 5.25" disk which is an interesting process) and you'll be swimming in games before you know it..

it's a null modem serial cable, but you'll need a 25 pin to 9 pin on the apple II side. additionally you can use two 3.5mm stereo cords to transfer via audio card (not recommended)

>> No.1035995

>>1035992

He doesn't need a null modem cable if he switches the super serial card to the "terminal" setting, he can just use a plain serial cable straight through

Yeah, no. Apple II's disk system is fast fast fast, especially compared to C64, Atari, anyone else of the time. The load times really aren't that bad - certainly no worse than, say, Xbox 360

I have an atari 800. I got it for 20 bucks off craigslist. The lady wasnt sure if it worked but i didnt mind. It came with original boxes and a ton of accessories for it. I cleaned it up and everything. Turns out it didnt work. It lights up and i hear noises when i hit the keys. But nothing shows up on the tv. I took out an replaces the video cable but it wasnt that. Kinda bummed. May try and sell it on craigslist for $30 bucks.

on the atari 800, composite video comes out of the DIN connecter. the phono connector is for RF channel 3. check your connections before you toss it.
