I got an R35S for $50. It plays almost every game I wanted an RP3+ for, but with many sacrifices. For example... Sonic Adventure 2 seems to... ADD lighting and shading that never existed in the game before? It makes it look like everything has a bright light aimed at them from their crotches. Yeah, SF2000 really needs some CFW but it isn't as easy as it sounds.
People who were developing CFW for it froze the project. Instead we got a leak of more up-to-date firmware from another device running the same chip. They reverse-engineered it to add other retroarch cores to it, so now we have "multicore" "CFW" with big "".

Performance is virtually the same, apart from adding new consoles. Screen tearing - same, no screen brightness controls, etc.

Funnily enough a lot of QOL improvements were already in in the prototype CFW. Like brightness control actually worked.

TLDR: SF2000 will not get a proper CFW anytime soon and thus it remains trash.

I had a black RP2+, matte and legit gorgeous, but it piled up on the fingerprints like you wouldn't believe. I had to rub it down with a damp cloth every couple of days or it would just get disgusting. The matte black A20, X18s before the latest revision, and some handheld PCs all have the same issue. DS and DSL and all of the DSi hardware are built on CPU architecture that's effectively an extended, improved architecture of GBS. Meaning all of the DS models CPU can act the same way as GBA CPU did - so this runs without any sort of emulation. Nintendo inbuild a hardware way for DS to boot into GBA mode, virtually downclocking and limiting the DS CPU.

The only core HW that GBA has that DS doesn't is the sound chip. Nintendo wrote a wrapper so that DS soundchip can act as GBA soundchip, despite their different architecture (API of sorts).

DSi however does not have a physical way to boot into GBA mode, so that is simply not possible in the same way like DS and DS Lite can do.
Now about GBA emulator on DS/DSL/DSi.. it's not really an emulator. It boots into DS mode, so extended architecture. Now the guy that wrote it wrote a loader where DS CPU is acting as simirarly as possible as hardware GBA mode of the DS, and he wrote a wrapper around sound generation as nintendo did.


TLDR: DSi can play GBA games but not 100% of them. It's because it can't boot into GBA mode and you can only achieve it by unofficial sideloading of roms that does not have 100% compatibility.

I think growing up poor taught me to tolerate bad design in games and in general functionality for a long long time. RP3+ does have some dumb design choices that puts me in awkward handheld situations. RP3+ home button being on the right hand so I cant grip it firmly out of fear of closing the menu, turning it into a super-ignored button, volume rockers on the left hand grip side doing the same. There's so much empty space on the faces of these handhelds that could easily take on the buttons but theres always some nut that thinks their thumbs are going to arbitrarily rub all of the front of the handheld during gameplay and push the wrong button, this fictional scenario killing a perfect handheld with extra or menu/function buttons on the front void space.

I guess partly that, partly imitating competition, mainly the world is smaller than we think and there's only 4 factories doing generic production runs of the boards and chips without doing any basic design principles for how its going to work in the day to day, or if they did, they figured out it would be too expensive to make more rational choices on button placement. Someone else ITT pointed out the start/select being this weird reach above and around the trigger motion and I noticed it happening for me too. Im babying the RP3+ so I havent even messed with the OS yet, Retroid Pocket 3 in default wont let you change layout on a per-game-basis in some consoles so its a lot of muscle memory on ignoring on-screen prompts to press the opposite buttons on the handheld itself. I dont think they'll ever make handhelds for people as picky as me, but this one's close enough for the price.

I heard the sliding analog sticks on the flip creak. The 2s feels good in hand, and the analog sticks are obviously better than sliders. I don't know what I would compare it to but it just feels nice to hold (I have medium/large hands). The screen is the same size as an rg351v, so it'll be fine for ps1 or other 4:3 consoles. The Switch is starting to win me over more and more as a handheld emulator.
It's not the most portable thing but NDS runs almost perfectly here with better screens and buttons than a 3DS and enough screento have both DS screens on display and being legible.

Both teams working on CFW have seemingly abandoned their work to focus on developing CFW on other handheld devices. Not because designing CFW for the SF-2000 is difficult but because it's seemed unnecessary. Of course the stock firmware isn't perfect, you need to exit and reload SNES and GBA games for them to run properly due to a memory issue, but other than that everything runs just fine and doesn't need "fixing".

This so much. Stock OS is not as trash as people think for SF2000. Emulators are well up to date, some of them are even on alpha builds to get performance boosts.
Better GBA/SNES performance is unlikely even with CFW. People are digging around stock os now to fix aspect ratio, which would make it semi-usable for me at least.
Screen tearing is rather unfixable.

I shit on Sf a lot in this and previous threads, but the only respectable thing about this handheld is that DataFrog is fucking paying contractors to update the OS.

The SF-2000 is great for Genesis and GameBoy/GameBoy Color/NES, good for MAME/Arcade, and requires reloading SNES/GBA titles, unable to really play higher end/special chip/"3D" SNES/GBA titles like Yoshi's Island and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. It was not. I put a $360 downpayment on the thing to reduce my monthly bill to $105 a month. I really only got a Flip because I wanted to see what it was like for DS and 3DS emulation, and find that I would just rather play the games on the New 3DS I already own. It also has a bunch of needlessly stupid extra steps for all of it, including the mere act of pulling it out of my pocket and needing both hands to open and making sure my thumb is on the power button properly to read my finger print when previous phones I just pulled it out with one hand and had instant easy access. As far as the settings go, it seems to be a mandatory feature with the Flip5, likely because Samsung invested so much into the retarded tech that they demand their customers use it. There's also some stupid lock screen feature I can't turn off where if the front facing camera detects not my face, but my eyes, looking away from the phone for a split second it auto-locks and I need to unlock it. It's so fucking awful.

Many emulators (like mGBA or Ares) don't recognize the Steam Deck's input when I try to rebind the controls, while it works fine on PPSSPP and melonDS. Is there no way to make them work? I'm already using gaming mode after adding them as non-Steam games.
