I fucking love CV3 and its soundtrack, the prelude is so good. I loved how with how CV3 it's established people fear Belmonts because of their superhuman abilities. The big sprite of the Vampire Killer, Trevor's portrait, it's all gold.
Then to top it off you have the intro cutscene of Trevor praying before standing up and casting his cloak aside before starting his crusade to fuck up Dracula.

>>10320750
Even then those optional characters have drawbacks to their breakage. Flying with Alucard uses up hearts really quickly, and while you're doing that you're not getting any candle. As for Sypha's lightning, first you have to find the damned thing, and in the US version there aren't many of them (and they're usually placed as the least easy candles to get), and that's granted you even know where to look, meaning that if you actually plays as Sypha popping candles looking for the lightning, you'll be very vulnerable.

CV4 Simon's 8-way whipping does not have drawbacks. Alucard and Sypha are more balanced.

Pic related is brutal without abusing the whip drop to kill them from above.
I guess Holy water would work too but I always keep the Cross.
BTW I noticed that actually using the digonal input can be hard for some people... Particularly renales? My gf just couldnt grasp it, I kept telling her she could whip in diagonal by oressing directional+Attack and she could do it standing still but while she was actually in the middle of the action she couldnt coordinate and just did regular horizontal attacks.

I will say Castlevania has colored my view of Dracula the novel quite a bit.

I pictured Quincy in the novel as a single dad trying to find a mom for John. Also he was carrying the vampire killer the whole time but nobody noticed.

Then again, Bram Stoker's Dracula is probably the most adapted book of all time. I imagine everyone has their perception colored in some way when they go to read it.

I know exactly what you mean. A good novel based on a very real and very compelling historical person (if somewhat loosely), has lasting appeal, I guess.

If anything, the fictionalized interpretations of Vlad are often pretty toned down, that motherfucker did not have an OUNCE of chill, even if we generously regard some accounts as exaggerations.

I've been playing Lament of Innocence because it's 20 years old this month.

It's a lot of fun! There are a ton of great background details in the textures that I get a huge kick out of. Did you notice that most of the doors in the Anti-Souls Mystery Lab have a radiation symbol flanked by lions above them? You can only see it if you double jump. There's a ton of shit like that.

It is still confusing to get around, I think mostly because the camera changes every time you go into a room so it's hard to keep your bearings. I don't know if the game would really be improved with a free camera, but it's hard to get used to a fixed one.

I love that even in this serious, bloody game there are accessories entirely to make your sound effects sound like a plastic squeaky toy. There's a real sense of goofy fun in the games that I enjoy.

I was legitimately surprised how enjoyable I found Lament of Innocence ever since the whole slander against 3dvania invaded a lot of Castlevania discussion. I understand why people complain about the level design somewhat since there are lot of copypasta rooms but it was still pretty fun exploring the Castles and the music is some of the best in the series. Harmony of Dissonance style magic was extremely fun system to mess with and the relics added fun variety to the game. I feel like one of the best things this game got right was the whip itself. It feels powerful, the forcefulness of the strong attack finisher sends skeleton bones flying and it's exactly the power you should expect of the vampire killer.

I think Curse was the strongest of the bunch. The 64 titles felt too empty and lacking in content, Lament was a bit of a slog and stiff in combat even though I think it nailed the atmosphere, the music and I quite like the real time inventory, it felt very natural to use and avoided the issue of pausing the game to heal with no consequence. Curse still fumbles on the level design but the gameplay is strong, the companions are a fun addition, the steal aspect is mostly good, nice variety in weapons, fun bosses. All in all a diamond in the rough.

I think it's worth playing it with Carrie and later with other characters if you want. It's the closest thing to a 3D Classicvania that we got, the other 3d games were more like beatemups.

I'll never not be upset by that, but thinking on it as of late, I can understand it as a matter of limitations. The GBA games could scarcely include it, there's not enough buttons for it and CoTM only saw fit to do it through a DSS combo. The DS games probably would have the buttons for it if they weren't using them for their gimmicks, especially PoR, though PoR also has the Nebula whip for perhaps this very purpose, even has a mini-Grand Cross super move that goes straight up. Not sure if Rondo of Blood could do it either, how many buttons do TurboGrraphx controllers have? The one game that I'm willing to give flack to for this is SoTN, there's really no good reason for Richter to not have multi-directional whipping, and I do still suspect that this decision is what influenced later games to not give a damn for it.

That all said, Chronicles had downward whipping, Bloodlines actually did work with the idea and even let you swing off of ceilings, the N64vania's targeting system allowed for it in their own way, and HoDespair just straight up brought it back for Julius to use, so hey.

>>10323997
I think every generation has its strengths and weaknesses, really. I adore the N64 games for basically being 3D classicvania, setting and all. I can at least appreciate the PS2vanias for what they are and especially like LoI, I have numerous issues with it but nonetheless think it only needs fixed level design to go from decent to maybe even great also I really like how Death can spam nukes. I actually love the LoS games for being more or less a continuation of LoI's gameplay but with game design just slightly like that of the N64 games, that is to say, I don't think it's 1 to 1 to classicvania, but I appreciate it as a modern 3D action game take on it.

Legacy if you want a hard mode that makes playing as Carrie actually rather difficult. It was for me, anyway, CV64 while not a cakewalk isn't super hard and the other characters in Legacy range from competent (Cornell) to damn good if not overpowered (Reinhardt) to bullshit strong (Henry and his gun that can be reloaded faster by swinging his knife). I feel like Carrie actually has a harder time of things despite a chargeable fireball that she can either fire off or cut with for extra damage, if my experience with the lake monster and a later boss is anything to go by.

Although, you'll probably have to beat the game as Cornell and Henry if you don't already have access to Carrie in LoD.

Eh, I consider Rondo to be easier (being able to jump on stairs, the Bible subweapon acting as a screen-filling offense-defense, and the overall easy level design more focused on exploration).
Also, other games tried to implement diagonal whip, Bloodlines, X68K (downward-diagonal).
I think the real reason why IV's whip was never replicated is because of the programmer, Mitsuru Yaida, he didn't work in another Castlevania again, but he did work in other games that emphasized on diagonal attacks a lot (Gunstar Heroes, Bangai O, Astro Boy Omega Factor)

The only other Castlevania team that probably got the legacy from the original team was Bloodlines, because they were advised by the IV team.

That's not considering things like knowing where every slab of meat is hidden or using holy water to dab on every boss in the game, yes even the flying bat. Finished Lament of Innocence before the anniversary.

The holy beast keys are pretty much the only reason to go back to areas after you run through them once, so it kind of ends up tedious. But I guess I can't blame them for wanting to add something to make the areas related.

The VI/IV puzzle in the final area is still dumb as hell. I'm not sure there's a real reason to visit the other tower in the area. It is neat that you can see both the towers from the final staircase, though.

When Leon says "I'll kill you AND the night!" he pretty obviously means the eternal night. And then he does. Leon's a good Belmont.

Walter's a more boring fight than I remember, Death is better. Both of them feel like a good finish to the game.

Didn't bother to beat the Forgotten One, not enough time before I go on vacation. It's a real cool idea, though. I love there being this horrible routine monster just chilling in the basement.

I remember when the netflix Castlevania show was announced, the number one thing I was looking forward to was seeing Death and Dracula have banter and interaction since it's not common in the games (except for PoR and it was hype as fuck). Aside from the entire show being garbage, realizing that Death would not even occupy the same screen space as Dracula for the entire thing to me felt like the biggest example of missed potential ever.
Felt like a no brainer, how could anyone look at this combo and not immediately think that is the most rad shit ever and not want to do anything with it?

I liked Rondo a lot, loved it even, but it has this little problem many CD based PC Engine games have had for me. There's a huge disconnect between the visual and musical feast with that terrible sound design. The SFX might as well not be there, the voice samples are comically muffled and even 8 bit consoles have crunchier, more satisfying regular SFX, they are super faint. Both Bloodlines and SCIV have much better audio feel in their own ways, and so did the NES games. Hell I've played a bunch of PC Engine games lately and yeah I found a couple favorites, awesome system, but even uber optimized games like Soldier Blade have the same kind of weak bleep bloops as SFX, they're really thin. Say, Sonic CD and all the Sega CD games I played did not have this problem either.

Why is this? What made the system do this, is it a CPU usage thing, because the thing has an 8 bit processor or something? Not that it makes the games bad or anything I'm just curious.

I disagree, I just find the grindy sounds of Bloodlines (like the armor footsteps, explosions or the Hellhound's howl) much more appropiate and satisfying, there's nothing as cool as those in Rondo, just very faint bleeps and bloops and goofy samples. I can probably mess around with the sound settings in the "PC Port" console of Rondo but it's not about volume. It's that they're a single tone or a very simple understated sound, in contrast with everything else, the music will always overshadow them. They're a poor match for everything else and the SNES/Genesis games do not have this slight issue. Again it's not a big deal but I was just wondering if there was something up, it must be I'm autistic and the contrast slightly bothers me.

I partly asked the original question because, as someone who grew up loving Kabuki Klash on arcade, I looked up the series online and saw this FMV QTE fighter for the system that has the opposite problem as Rondo: Super crisp CD voices and anime SFX but in-chiptune music. I find this less jarring actually but even years after playing any games on it, I figured there was something up with the technology.

It is, how people on other boards would say, extremely polarizing. I consider it second best after SotN because horror atmosphere, soundtrack, some similarity to SotN (and no, i consider this game not a SotN ripoff, but a SotN from human perspective rather than half-vampire son of the castle owner). Other castleroid entries lack this "horror" part and are too bright in general.
But i have always played HoD on emulator with good headphones, so i heard a superior version of soundtrack compared to cheap weak gameboy "audiosystem".
Yes, i don't mention gameplay just because it is okay, like in SotN - this games were never gameplay-heavy or even hard, they are good as a media, as a sum of its components rather than as excelling on only a single option.

the only weird boss move is when the mummy makes all little bits of wrapping fly everywhere, but if you rush forward as soon as you see the flying boxes appear you can make it past the part of the screen that he'll shoot them at. im pretty sure you can straight up jump over him too.
all the other bosses are pretty straight forward and its about practice and doing each boss cleanly.

fuck rondo of blood the game sucks major league cock. completely unfun rng bullshit bosses, stupid floating enemies have absolutely no patterns or consistent behavior its complete random whether or not theyll just meander around or hound you like a dog. you attempt a boss and get completely raped with no possible way of winning, you attempt it again and they let you hit them repeatedly and win out of complete luck no satisfaction whatsoever
dracula X is unironically completely better

Started playing SotN tonight, it's pretty fun. Non-retro but I'm also considering grabbing a copy of the 360 version of Castlevania Lords of Shadow. I played a bit of the first and I feel like I could possibly get good at and enjoy it, maybe? $50 for two disc based games and DLC codes is a pain in the ass though and I regret not buying it when it was $20 cheaper. Back to retro, I'm thinking of grabbing CV 1-3 for NES, since I bought a Famiclone. I'd also love a copy of Bloodlines but I don't want to see how bad the price for a loose cart is there days.

Not him but the same could be said about King's Quest 5 ad it is not a platformer either anon lmao. Bottomless pits do not a platformer make, a Souls controls nothing like one. They are ARPG first and foremost, you are never expected to straight up jump over a chasm, the jumping mechanics are not responsive enough. Most instances of that are shortcuts or skips. It's why I still think Maximo's a good example still.

Inspiration, sure. But no, they aren't a 3D Castlevania. There are gameplay similarities; maps that emphasis backtracking and shortcuts built around distinct "levels" with both boss/es and save points which restore your resources being the biggest one. But the Soulsborne series lacks a lot of the themes, mechanics, humor and aesthetics that serve as the backbone of Castlevania.

The "shitty controls" are what the original games were designed around. By taking that away and not factoring in how many enemies would be easy to exploit without it and how the purpose of certain subweapons was entirely to give you that range, which you now have by default, you get a problem. SCIV is a fine game, but it's not the best Castlevania.

Yes and yesterday I discovered you can reach Pinwheel directly and surpass that wretched catacombs levels with two rolls, but it's in spite of the game's physics, it's a bonus for skips and shit. The game never throws jumps at you as a mandatory challenge. Even FPS have better platforming, and you wouldn't call them platformers.
