I love the Neo Geo, but I'm getting tired of emulation. I think it's time for me to own some real hardware.

Are there any Neo Geo enthusiasts around here? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the different options available. I'd love to get a consolized MVS, but I feel like there must be a cheaper option. Is there any reason why I should go for an AES?

Also, Neo Geo thread. Post your hidden gems and game sprites.

I went for an AES because of two reasons.

I could fucking afford it now, and because I always wanted one as a kid. Yeah, everyone wanted their own arcade, but that was pie in the sky.

The problem with the AES is the carts are ridiculously expensive these days. I guess you could buy a converter thing, but those aren't cheap either.

>>1032334
Isn't it also really hard to spot fake carts? This is what worries me the most.

>Tfw no AES release of the original Shock Troopers
That was one of my favorite Neo Geo games, darn it.

>> No.1032342

Just emulate unless you want to get an MVS.
Playing Neo Geo through composite on a consumer TV just seems like sacrilege.

>> No.1032341

I've almost pulled the trigger on an MVS a couple times. There were a couple for sale a few hours from me, and I have a truck to haul it, plus the space for it in my basement.

I would love an AES, but when you can get an MVS cabinet and a 161-1 multicart for $100 more, why the fuck wouldn't you?

>>1032334
Yeah, I could have bought a standup MVS and a pirate cart for what I paid for my AES, Phantom 1 adapter, but fuck it. All of my Neo Geo shit will fit in a backpack. I wanted the AES. I have it. It collects dust now, but it's mine.

My first time playing my AES.

With the consolized MVS, you have to either use AES controller/sticks or buy one of their outrageously expensive sticks if you want multiplayer. Neither seem like an ideal solution.

the only reason to get an AES is if you have shitloads of cash to throw away. the games can be worth thousands each. It would be much cheaper to get a 1 slot MVS and a supergun. or you can try to 'consolize' it yourself.

I found a 2-slot MVS at a local "movie theater" with the obligatory Metal Slug. Those places are supposed to be fun, but that place is a shithole. When that place inevitably goes down I intend to rescue it.

Unless one of you guys wants to eventually take it in. It's at the Pembroke Pines Flipper's for you South Florida /vr/iends

The cheapest type of Superguns are "Vogatek" type ones. There are a few different kinds but they're all about $50. They run off PC power supplies. The cheapest one to run outputs S-Video and uses Genesis controllers.

Multislot MVS boards (and some older single-slot models) have AES controller ports built in. They were probably planned to be used to connect additional controls for 4-player games, but SNK never followed through with that idea.

I got the parts in today to mod my AES joystick. If anyone has an AES I highly recommend this mod. The sanwa buttons feel 100 times better than the original crappy ones. and the red ball top is rather neat as well.

The 161-in-1 multicarts are crap. There's some with a lower number on the sticker with more real games and less shitty hacks (KING OF MONSTER 2004+++ NUDE MAI EDISION).

>>1033574
They were, in some cases, wired through to the front of the machine (along with the memory card + headphone ports). You could bring a NGCD pad or something if you liked that.

>> No.1037285

>>1037271

They worked fine at home for save games. Not in the arcade. It was a long time ago but I remember, I was there.
Ask any kid who owned one, if you can find one, which is gonna be a tough since it originally retailed for 800-900 dollars and the games were $250 each for the first 2 years.

Anyways, at the arcades half of them either didn't work due to shoddy/faulty circuitry or someone fucked them up from horseplay or sticking shit in them.

Your chances were about 1 in 10 of finding a machine that could work with one.
And then, of course, you would have to hope the 4 games on that standup were ones you cared about.
