As a kid I thought Metallix in the comic was cool. Between that design, and the glowing reviews I'd seen for Sonic CD, the game had an eminence in my estimation that lasted a decade.

The funny thing is that this vhs tape was everywhere when Sonic Adventure came out, and as that was my first sonic game I owned, the OVA felt like a bridge between the original games and adventure.
I really loved the “movie” as a kid.

I also want to add that for whatever reason, the Sonic OVA and Final Fantasy X are the ONLY two properties that ever attempted a “tropical used future”.

I'm pretty sure renting the VHS tape of the OVA was my first GOOD exposure to Sonic as a kid. I remember comparing it to Sonic Underground which I'd seen before it and thought was kind of lame. Metal Sonic has been one of my favorite characters since. That OVA really had some excellent atmosphere and setting design to it.

I still like Adventure but the setting doesn't do anywhere near as much for me as the OVA or the 2D Sonics.

I don't know if it was a 'bridge' to Sonic Adventure. The VHS 'movie' came out in 1999, around the launch of Sonic Adventure, but in Japan it was released as two separate episodes, each one as its' own VHS tape in 1996, as a rental only. The production for these episodes probably started back in 1994-1995, around the time of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. The OVA episodes attempt to try and merge Sonic CD ; which kinda had its' own cannon with-in the 16bit Sonic games, and Sonic 1, 2 and 3. The animation studio was trying to merge it all together into one narrative. But they seemed to have taken their own creative liberties as well. The character Sarah seemed like their own contribution. I don't know if studio Pierrot had any concept art for Sonic Adventure given to them by Sonic Team. The English localization was released by ADV Films in 1999, and I think they timed it close to the release of Sonic Adventure, as it was Sonic's big comeback game, after getting a few lower profile releases on the Saturn. Sonic franchise had a big refresh with Sonic Adventure, the 'movie' never quite fit in with Sonic Adventure.

I love the atmosphere in both the movie and adventure 1.

Mecha Sonic doesn't have much beyond his design. Metal has a nice bossfight that, while decently easy, is at the very least interesting to deal with. Mecha Sonic is just a way easier version of his Sonic 2 counterpart and he is the final boss for Knuckles despite being really easy and boring.

I would imagine tat Sonic Adventure drew influence from the OVA and not the other way around. Given the development time of the OVA, I don;t imagine that Sonic Adventure was in development when the episodes started. But, then again, Sonic the hedgehog has always had 'humans' if you count Dr. Robotnik/ Eggman. The OVA did feature essentially New York in ruins. I think it was implied that this was in the distant future. The OVA really is closest to Sonic CD, with some elements from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, with Tails and Knuckles. Sonic OVA had a different voice actor from Adventure. I find most of the English Sonic voice actors to be derivative of Jaleel White.

I'm not sure if there are any actual humans, besides Robotnik or Eggman. Sarah is a cat girl. She has a cat tail, and her car ears are hidden behind her hair bow. The President is questionably not human either. I think he is some sort of anthropomorphic cat man. I'm not really sure. It's like... humanity was wiped out, and anthropomorphic people took over. The lore in the OVA is insane. Also, the Swatbots from SonicSatAM and the Archie comics are in the OVA. They are anime-ified versions of the Swatbots.

I don;t even consider myself to be a huge Sonic fan as I have not played every game. But I mostly like the stuff from the original era of Sonic games up to Adventure, and maybe a few later releases. But I do find the OVA to be kinda fascinating on its' own merits. Image related, is a scene from the OVA with Sara showing that she has cat ears under her hat. She has a tail that she seems to keep hidden. So either her father: 'The President' is part cat too, and is hiding the fact that he is, or he impregnated an anthropomorphic cat from Sonic's outer world and is trying to keep it a secret from the public? Robotropolis is also located in the ruins of New York. Did Robotnik destroy earth, and open a portal to Sonics world? Sonic X is Sonic and friends entering the human world. Sonic OVA is some sort of post apocalyptic world.

Sega wanting to make a Sonic anime since the 90s doesn't mean that they had anything remotely close to X in mind at the time. The OVA and X were made by completely different studios and had completely different premises.

The earliest pilot clip of X had Shadow in it, so it can't have been in serious development since any earlier than 2000 or so, and that's still a huge stretch considering absolutely everything has always pointed to X being devised as part of the multimedia marketing push Sega did to introduce Sonic to a new generation of children when dropping out of the console race and going multi-platform. The only remotely 90s things about X are the diversity squad classmates and the Japanese OST coincidentally using the same instruments as some of the Sonic X-Treme concept music.

It was always implied that Metal was created in the dystopian bad future of Sonic CD using alt-timeline technology. In Terminator style, in Sonic Adventure, Eggman had the remains of Metal Sonic and was trying to reverse engineer it with his current tech. So that mysterious Sonic robot may have been him getting closer. In comparison, Metal looks a lot slicker and more refined with less seems. Kinda like the Miles Dyson thing.

Metal is such a good design, it perfectly gets across being a robotic copy without being too lazy, but also not too busy. Things like not having a mouth, having a jet thruster, and his feet being this big jointed section really hammer in the point that he is a robot, his similarity to Sonic is purely superficial.

These might seem like obvious or small details to be impressed by, but he could easily be a worse design. They could have just made Sonic, but with a metallic skin or blockier build and maybe some segmented looking limbs and call it a day, but Metal really nails "this is a machine shaped like Sonic, but isn't Sonic"

So instead of that portal being like the time gates from CD, it’s just a way to get into that world and the OVA implied planet freedom was a post apocalyptic earth.
