Stopped getting updates on my R35S again, this time due to it being Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I know it's sitting at a Toronto airport, waiting to go through customs before it's released to be delivered to my city.
Not playing any retro titles at the moment but one of the Analogue dudes did inspire me to play some physical Puyo Pop. Even tho I love my modded GBA, I'm gonna be doing it on a GBA SP.

I owned an English copy of GB Mystical Ninja back in the day, but it was so damn hard and confusing that I simply got rid of it out of ignorant impotence. The best ones truly are Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and the DS game, "Tokaidochu Oedo Tengurikaesi no Maki" which was the final entry in the franchise on the Nintendo DS. One Piece even references this game with their Fake Strawhat Crew that shows up in Chapter 61: 598.
This game has everything, and utilizes ALL of the DS's features beautifully whereit doesn't feel like a gimick, even unlocking a space shooter minigame if you have the Ganbare Goemon 1+2 GBA cart in your DS while playing this game.
If you like video games, you need to play Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon on the N64 and the grand finale that was the DS game.

The game even has "New Age Goemon", a terrible reboot of the franchise that only got one PS2 game and one GBA game, in jail in one town for his crimes against the franchise. This game was meant to be the final entry in the series, knowing it was being retired, and they reference EVERYTHING. It is fucking amazing, and was done when Konami was still competent and passionate about video games before their Castlevania failure made them reconsider games as an endeavor, even before Kojima's over-inflated budget for MGSV.

I'd say almost there. The fine pitch work for the CPU/RAM/Ribbon connecter and proper use of a hot air station to not cook them. Chip quick helps but you need to be able able clean it up. If you want practice because you're not sure I'd get two LED practice kits with chips, populate it and make sure it works, then transfer everything to the second ones board, and if it still works then you'll have a much better feel.

Retro is a Latin prefix which just means backwards. In our lexicon, the common understanding of retro is something that is at least 20 years old(living/dead beings withstanding). By the nature of how time works, retro is by definition a fluid category.

So is retro fluid or not? If it's fluid, that means it isn't rigidly restricted to specifically, exactly twenty years.
On top of that, don't pretend that Nintendo didn't openly want to have the GBA, DS, and GCN all during the same generation as some "triple threat" strategy before they saw how stupid popular the DS was and prematurely killed the GBA to focus on the DS. Nintendo themselves consider the DS family to be sixth gen.

DS is sixth gen. Seventh gen starts November 2005, a year later after the DS released. The handheld families even co-exist with the fucking home consoles they go with, for fuck's sake. ie; PSP is 7th gen and works with the 7th gen console, the PS3. Vita is 8th gen and works with the 8th gen console, the PS4. DS was 6th gen, 3DS was 7th gen, and then Nintendo made the Switch both their handheld/home console for 9th gen. Does the 3DS even have any compatibility with the Switch besides transferring with Pokemon Home?

name me another handheld which has:
metal dome switches (not rubberdome trash)
no larger than the Vita
screen at least 4"
screen resolution at least 1280x720
playstation layout
other buttons also in the correct place (start and select are on the FRONT)
shoulder buttons don't stick out past the back of the device
analog sticks don't stick out past the buttons
passive cooling (no fan)
front facing stereo speakers, NOT positioned below where your thumbs would be
price is not an issue

Trimui has achieved absolute perfection, just by copying the Vita. the only thing I would change is to increase the curvature on the edge, the Smart Pro has a hybrid shape between square slop and the Vita curve.

I'm more interested in PS1 games, which I don't typically play on my Vita because:
the best performance is with using hacks to bypass Adrenaline and you need to do some custom bubble fuckery and ROM conversion and I can't be assed to do any of that, not to mention you give up savestates and all other conveniences
using Adrenaline gives good performance but you still need to do some sort of stupid fuckery with the ROMs and the PSP menu is obnoxious
Retroarch is the most convenient way but the PS1 emulator can't handle any 3d game at full speed

I'm a brainlet but modding the Vita is no more complicated than it is modding a 3DS/Wii. They made the instructions simple and if you modded those, you can mod a Vita just fine.
Even if you don't see much point in doing so, it's at least worth modding the console just to take advantage of those MicroSD2Vita adapters. The Vita's proprietary storage is just too expensive and it's not worth it.

The wiz, dingoo, caanoo were seemingly random and idk why the fuck gph chose those names, but they're fun names to say and the dingo/caanoo/wiz are still better than more than half of the chonkies coming out literally ten years later. Superior Korean engineering. It sucks that gamepark couldn't hold on until covid, they would be making handhelds that give your dead grandpa a hard on, but the e.ukation handheld markst was extremely niche and they were barely holding on by a thread the whole time. funnily enough, the Vita was actually severely underclocked at 444mhz, the CPU was designed for 2ghz, but Sony decided the heat and battery life would be disastrous at full power so they limited it. but anyway, the original argument was that PS2 games designed for TV would have UI elements too small on a 5" display, which I think is bullshit. PS2 may have been capable of full HD, but most games were designed around 480i because standard definition composite video was still what most people had at the time.

Ok I'm not going to yell at you. You're not understanding the equation. The PS2 had a resolution of 480i, why would they make the text smaller when porting games to the Vita? The Vita, which has double the resolution as the PS2, do you see what I'm saying?

There was probably no need to. The assets for ui were probably at a perfect scalability in the ps2 version... most likely compressed textures that could be easily uncompressed and used at a higher resolution, but we don't know. RP3+, goddamn man, feels good. Such a huge step up from the V90. PS2, Gamecube, Dreamcast, everything under it. Here I was jazzed about starfox2 and ssx3, this thing does it all. Even carried over my pokemon emerald save so I can fastforward the slo-mo GBA pokemon games. Can play call of duty doom with gyro for perfect aim with my custom wads, tomorrow Im throwing on the music and videos. Wii apparently supports motion controls on RP3+, wonder if its worth it for the OTG cable to hook up a dolphin bar and take this thing on the road. Hook into a hotel TV with the hdmi.

One more real gripe, I havent figured out how to apply settings per-game so Im killing progress of one game's A/B=B/A. Lets be real, Retroarch's UI sucks for common sense interaction but its the only thing that comes with the RP3+ that can do per-game-basis control remapping without fucking with the others.

Decided to move onto GC emulation with my Odin Lite. Are the games in the Parappa series known for being difficult, I can't get the timing down in Um Jammer Lammy for shit.
Also Clock Tower for PS1 seems to be a pretty good follow up to the SNES original. I like how forgiving it is with the hint system to get the best endings, as well as the ability to save basically anywhere. Granted, only made it to scenario 2 so far before my eyes felt too tired to keep playing,
but it doesn't seem that obtuse for its time either.

I'm still on my smartphone/telescopic controller setup that's been serving me well for 6 months now, alongside RetroArch. I can't recommend it enough for those that have and old smartphone around gathering dust, and that want to start it out with something really cheap before going in with a dedicated handheld, a cheap controller is not as bad as it sounds, this MOCUTE-060 was a steal, and yet it's been working fine. I've been in a bit of a Disney episode, replaying some of the stuff I grew up with... recently I discovered that a Lion King video game, with both films being in it, for Game Boy Color, and to my surprise they took inspiration from how the Genesis/SNES title from the 90's played, I always wanted more of that, it's here... the main issue is that the OST has only a single track for all levels, but thankfully you can mute it while keeping the SFX, to play a different song in the background if you wish. I think it's a fine title really, managed to beat it 100% on the hardest difficulty setting, exploring levels is fun.

I agree, my main fear was actually the input lag, but maybe I got lucky since it's been fine for me so far. It's a pain having separate batteries, but for most of these controllers they last long on a single charge, so it isn't too much of an issue in the long run, only in those scenarios where one battery is low while the other is fine, which I do admit is quite a pain and breaks the fun of it all.

I've never minded the streching much, used to play 4:3 stuff in 16:9 a lot when I began to play the stuff I grew up with again, with emulators, and it didn't bother me that it didn't look the same as it did on my old 4:3 TV, over time I did begin to prefer 4:3 again, but in this case, with such a wide device, over 25cm long, having so much negative space bothers me more than a stretch, it's a matter of picking your poison, it would be ideal to have a 16:9 or 4:3 screen.

Its the second most accurate aiming system Ive ever used next to VR. Usual Lthumb Rthumb + Gyro XY at super high sensitivity, sometimes I dont even touch the R thumb to aim its that accurate.

I dont know how new the RP3+ is but I resent myself not finding out about this at launch for this price. Its consolidated a tablet, v90, iphone and a little of my pc (sadly ive lost all trust in steam link) into one device.

Nope, Analogue is slow as fuck at doing anything. Current cope is after translucent they'll start doing more on the software side given they've caught up with orders. That's not to say that they won't make another special edition though
>and the update that was meant to have them was actually just some bullshit that was just "misinterpreted" by everyone?
They outright said OpenFPGA will support them soon (1 year ago lmfao)
>I honestly don't know why anyone would even want one of these things.
Nice screen is a large chunk of the reason. I've been burned multiple times by chinkhelds with washed out low quality 480p screen. Cart support is another, ability to use the link cable and such. OpenFPGA has a sizeable core list of pretty well everything I want to play minus PSX but that's not going to happen.
>The games don't even run at native framerates, everything is just upped to 60.
Dunno where you got this, can't find anything like it by googling.

It's not for everyone and I can see why anons hate the device. Analogue themselves are a fucking aids company who deserve the shit thrown at them. It's the perfect example of a shit company having a good product. Most of what makes it good is the community-made content for it.

For me the main issue is the absolute joke of a price due to scalping. If I could pick one up for 200 bucks and it had filters, I could live with the crap D-pad and awful triggers.

Honestly, the chink handhelds are improved a lot with very simplistic filters. Do they look amazing? No. But for 50 bucks, it's not bad. I'll probably just wind up waiting for a chink to work out they could put in a high resolution screen in one.

Even without scalping, you're looking at like 100 bucks shipping in most of the world because "fuck you". If they were actually 220 bucks like they claim to be on their site, I wouldn't have a problem with them.

>>10312572
I think the reason nobody else has done it is because chink handhelds are pretty underpowered and the chinks are pretty clueless about anything but copying each other. There are severe scaling issues on every chink handheld due to the shitty resolutions, if you want to play a tate shooter your options are postage stamp or non-integer scaling. Most devices don't even have support for actual filters in retroarch, they only do overlays.

Most chinkhelds are random companies reaching into a parts bin and throwing shit at the wall until something sticks. The last big thing to "stick" was the Miyoo Mini and its derivatives (Mini+ and RG35XX). Ever since then, all those companies are trying to chase the lightning again.

Vita has had full speed SNES forever, use the SNES9x 2005 core with speed hack on max. the other cores are just for compatibility with certain games (ex: SMRPG only runs with the 2002 core). Steam Deck does it much better : virtual keyboard for the occasional text inputs, controller remapping for games without controller support or kb only functions. For anything more serious than that, just wait till you get home and hook up an actual full size keyboard. Wasting valuable real estate on a physical keyboard is such a contrarian meme.

It was a debate on whether the DS was sixth generation (which is retro now) or seventh generation. Nintendo released it during the sixth generation and had this whole, "Triple Threat" argument that they were going to have the GBA, GameCube, and NDS all together to cover all avenues until they saw how stupid popular the DS was and shitcanned the GBA prematurely.
Meanwhile the Indian British dude who keeps spamming, "you're just pretending to play video games" is allowed to keep shitting the place up. And proceeding my ban for discussing the DS, the thread became a discussion about the fucking VITA.

These threads are full of unironic Anbernic, Retroid, Powkiddy and Analogue shills going after people for enjoying something that isn't their product. Look how many retards (probably a samefag) replied to a picture that Russ 'shopped onto his Pocket (something that all content creators do for their thumbnails for all of their devices) that's been distorted further.
For a board dedicated to people who would presumably be interested in retro vidya you'd think your average poster would be able to tell when the display isn't even capturing a full screenshot of Mario World and that it's distorting the image in a way that even the worst display wouldn't distort it.

Fuck shills. Post the vidya that you're playing on your handheld.

(Anbernic rgplus > Coolbaby rs-97) a lot of these companies also order others to manufacture handhelds or to slap their branding or develop firmware. (The v90 wasnt actually made by powkiddy, their only clamshells were the various x18's. On that note, powkiddy also makes the firmware for the gkd devices. >there is nothing contrarian about liking good things
You're being contrarian in three different ways with this very statement alone.
1. Being contrarian has absolutely nothing to do with whether the stance you take is a positive or negative one, it is purely whether you take the stance to oppose the statements another is making. Liking something because somebody else does not like it, is in fact, being contrarian.
2. You literally just stated the contrarian argument against the post you were replying to without even attempting to explain why you disagreed, you're literally just saying, "you're wrong" and leaving it at that. That's being contrarian. You're not attempting to argue why you disagree, you're just stating that you disagree.
3. And the most basic one, claiming the Analogue Pocket is "a good thing". In comparison to what? It fucking sucks compared to original hardware with a basic, less expensive IPS screen mod which takes NO soldering, it's easier than assembling a fucking computer. It fucking sucks compared to comparable hardware by other companies, which also sell their comparable hardware for significantly less. The Analogue Pocket is just an overpriced piece of shit and the only people defending the thing are "I GOT MINE" Reddit faggots trying to chase the Amiibo scalping craze from 2017, literally living to just buy something because they think it's popular.
