Actually, not. The first PES (Winning Eleven) was Goal Storm.

Konami experimented with a couple of football video games in the 80's and 90's, until they had both the Jikkyou World Soccer and World Soccer Winning Eleven franchises, the former is known as International Superstar Soccer outside of JP, while the latter was known as Goal Storm in few regions, but International Superstar Soccer Pro for most... it's a localization issue, they're not a single franchise, one was made by KCEO and the other by KCET, Konami Osaka and Tokyo divisions respectively. International Superstar Soccer Pro was renamed International Superstar Soccer Pro Evolution and then finally Pro Evolution Soccer, but in JP it was always Winning Eleven, while the Jikkyou World Soccer series got titles on N64, but ended on the 6th console generation...

Now Winning Eleven has joined its brother in death, and all that's left is... eFootball 2024.

Reminder that iss deluxe is still getting romhacks with updated teams.
Kinda wish ISS64 got those too even if the made up players are funny.

Europoors have spent the past 30 years buying a new povertyball game every single year for full price (sometimes MULTIPLE povertyball games per year) and they don't think there's anything wrong with that.

What kind of mass mental illness causes this obsession?

A sport is fundamentally a game, and watching other people play, especially at a high level, has been common for centuries, add a few elements of tribalism in there and you have sports as we know them today... you know how most people turn into hardcore nationalists when there's a little tension with other countries, even if they hate their current governments, and especially during wars? It's all in our nature, and football, alongside other sports, scratches that itch, but without any killing, there's also the matter that to many it's a passion they associate with their parents, mostly fathers, who took them to see the local team and cheer for it, so it becomes special... in short, people that love football, and other sports, are really passionate about it, they often watch it, play it, read about it, talk about it among other things... it's no wonder sports video games are also something people become truly passionate about, and when people are like that, they keep buying it even if the quality they grew up with is no longer there. As a football fan, I can safely say that between PES1 and PES6, and then FIFA08 to FIFA16, we saw genuine improvements in the genre every year, so spending the money felt fair... now though? EA Sports FC and eFootball are both a disgrace to the sport.

I think every single PES game up until 2017 is still getting updated by dedicated fans, with PES 6 receiving the biggest share of the crop.
But goddamn man, those games are incredibly fun to play. How come nobody else got it right? Other than maybe that 98 Tecmo football game.

maybe this is the only chance I've ever had to ask this but...

do any of you remember a player from the master league called EDINSON? that bald motherfucker was a bench CB with more offense than defense, if you played the CB OVERLAP strategy was a damn nice card in your hand

there were tons of things like this in the PS1 WEs, the perfect game about the perfect game

I still can't decide if my favorite is Winning Eleven 3: Final Ver. or Winning Eleven 2002, both did the World Cups they represented a lot of justice, just playing them feels like a time capsule, and it still baffles me how Konami managed to make a mix of arcade and simulation that fans of both styles loved... while nowadays whenever EA or Konami attempt it both sets of fans hate it, it's like now they combine the worst aspects of arcade and simulation that just don't go together to make something cohesive, but back then they did, they did it just right, a perfect translation of football into video games.
