When I saw this as a kid, I wanted there to be an illusion of Gaia 2 set in the modern world so bad.

This game is worse than soul blazer and terranigma. The game itself it's not bad and has good things but i found the other two games to be far more enjoyable. Also, the game never explains why does the kid has the power to turn into a giga chad and a monster but whatever.

He was cursed by the comet to be immortal, but only in the sense of not dying of old age. He was determined to die, one way or another.

Should've read the manual.

There's the angel suicide scene, but it's not very graphic. I'd put it second in terms of gameplay, but it stands way above the other two in atmosphere.

I beat this game and I barely remember all this dark stuff.

Seth, the kid who gets killed by the whale, is shown to be from an alcoholic family with a father who beats him.
He is then the first to tie of the party. So, he had a bad run at it.

I beat it recently. It was a very good game except for the terrible localization. I'm surprised there has been no rom back to improve the translation. I like this track a lot:

Granted, I prefer Soul Blazer and Terranigma. Still, they're all great games.
