to be fair I don't actually "like" old games. I play them because modern games are fucking shit. hot take but I think gaming never truly had a golden age. it is a medium that died too young. the 1st-6th gens were evolving and experimenting and all those years of evolution and countless experiments and improvements were building up to something great, and we almost got that, but the 7th gen just ended up being a brown and piss COD FPS slop generation and gaming only got worse after that.

now, if gaming DIDN'T go to shit, I think the golden age of video games would've started with the 8th gen and would've still been going

I don't want "retro" gaming. I just want gaming to evolve past 2007.

it's not "clinging to old games". it's rejecting AAA slop that has $100mln in marketing, $100mln in "cinematic" graphics with absolutely no new ideas or soul. I'd rather have a game made by a small studio that actually cared about gameplay, aesthetics and soul. they just barely exist anymore.
