the first Spider-Man vidya ever made and it's a kind of clone of Crazy Climber. climb up the building, catch baddies, and defuse the Green Goblin's bomb while avoiding him before your health meter runs out. then just repeat over and over at differing difficulties trying to get as high a score as you can. that's about all you can do on an Atari 2600 in 4k of ROM.

There was a magazine article from 83 where Stan Lee plays this game and admits he's not very good at it. But ok he was a 60 year old boomer, he wasn't as attuned to vidya as a 20 year old would be.

Spider-Man video games were so mediocre in the 80's and 90's that this was genuinely among few better ones for the longest time... I think the 1st ones that actually topped it in quality were about a decade later, Amazing Spider-Man on Game Boy and Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on Genesis, other titles from the late 80's managed to be worse to me, mainly Questprobe and Doom's Revenge...

Marvel picked really bad shovelware developers for a long time.

Indeed, and even the few examples that worked, which I mentioned, were more by chance than it being Marvel making an effort to give one of the main characters they owned a decent title... they got Rare, before Rare was a big deal, and when it still had LJN as their publisher, which had quite a bad reputation even then, and SEGA, which they didn't even approach, SEGA themselves did so...

In the 90's things didn't even get that better, the couple of titles I mentioned did start the decade well enough, but LJN was still the publisher and often gave the IP to mediocre developers, after Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin and its SEGA-CD port, I don't think we got a genuinely good Spider-Man video game until Neversoft did it in 2000, which to me is still the best Spider-Man's ever gotten.

P.S. Arcade's Revenge had everything to be good, it's frustrating how they messed it up so bad... also, I like Maximum Carnage as a video game, but it doesn't feel much like a Spider-Man one...

Fuck. I'm pretty certain I watched my cousin play this when I was like 5, it stuck out because a lot of the background was black. Man I'm going to have to try this out 30 year later. Thanks for the flashback.

To be fair that's more due to the hardware than anything. Not even Capcom could have made a playable game on the ZX Spectrum.

I'm glad to hear, this one's really worth the time even after all of these years, hope you have fun with it! I still adore this one more than most, but I'm both a Spider-Man fan and a SEGA fan, so I'm quite biased, I'll admit. I just love the atmosphere that manages to be dark, but not too dark, quite moody, with its graphics and OST really selling it on this regard, the story's also entertaining still.

One thing that you have to keep in mind though, it's not too simple, especially bosses, that often have a very specific strategy to make them easy, but otherwise can be tough, especially Kingpin, since you only get one shot, and have MJ being dropped into acid in the background if you're not quick enough, I can give some tips, but I don't want to risk spoiling it against your will either.

P.S. If you're still in touch with your cousin, make sure to send him a message, maybe with a photo of you playing and asking him if he remebers it, I'm sure it'll put a smile on his face if you do.

I had this game on a bootleg Atari 2600 that had a hundred games on it, if not more. At least I assume it was bootleg. Anyway, I didn’t know this was a Spider Man game until the AVGN episode (like 20 years later).
