I love same-engine sequels! Almost every time they're better than the first game. (Almost.)
My favorites:
>Metroid Prime 2
>Majora's Mask
>Doom II (or better yet Doom 64 which is built off of PSX Doom)
>Mario Lost Levels

Zelda Oracle games, not quite better than Links Awakening but still really good.
San Andreas, best of the trilogy.

Based thread. For me, its The Lost Age

Tooie is a prime example of this. It doesn't always work out in pracitce, but I'm a sucker for games that start you out with all the same abilities from the last game and then just ADD MORE

This is completely incorrect.

>sequel is treated as an expansion to the first game that assumes you played, and ramps up the complexity
Pretty much my favourite way to make a sequel. Pikmin 2 is a good example.

Are oracles made on the LA engine? I think Capcom was just miming the LA look and feel.

the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi games are a perfect example of this, allowing each game to build upon the previous game's mechanics and roster leading to BT3 having one of the largest and most complete rosters of any Dragon Ball game ever made

They are different engines, seeing how glitches in LA don't work in the Oracles, and vice-versa.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
It was worse... but it added more combos, a lock-on system, more costumes, costume customization, a focus on stealth, new web types... it also went for a darker and more moody atmosphere, which I quite like, Spider-Man finally got his webbing on the suit too, alongside the web wings from the early comics.
I like it just as much as Neversoft's original.

CZ was actually better, but only incrementally, and the laws of playerbase size would (eventually, after many years) kill this game before its predecessor

The Crash and Spyro games on PS1.
The first games were already crazy optimized to look good on the Playstation, and the sequels pushed it even further.
A lot of people don't like the third games in either of these series, due to how gimmicky they are. I still like playing them just to see the new graphical tricks they pull off.

BT3 has an excellent roster, but it took a huge step back with the story mode. Maybe not the fairest comparison, no DBZ game since has been as in depth with its story mode as BT2.

Really fighting games in general fit this thread. Or not, depending on if you count different iterations of a game to be sequels.

>no DBZ game since has been as in depth with its story mode as BT2.
You could say this of fighting games in general as well. BT2's story was simple but it was a lot better than what most games in the genre offer.

Perfect Dark took the Goldeneye engine and ran to the moon and back with it
Likely the most extreme example of same engine for same hardware taken to the absolute limit
I also love the Tony Hawk games for 5th gen. The way 2 is so much better than 1 and the way they remade 3 and 4 in the THPS2 engine.

>have no clue what's going on
>they never fucking stop talking
>obnoxious little chibi animations in between EVERY SINGLE speech box
>can't skip any of this
>despite the long-winded conversations they never communicate who these people are or what this "lighthouse" they're in is or why they're being chased by random guards
>can't even have a random encounter without the generic thug saying 3 speech boxes worth of text

How am I supposed to throw the boxes on Shocker when he's constantly knocking me down? The web aiming mechanic is kind of annoying, I don't remember the first game being this clunky to control.

He breaks out of the web 0.1 seconds after I let go of the button while I have to stand in place to aim the reticle lmao this is annoying. I don't know how I pulled the box on him once, it was a total fluke.

It really is a pain of a boss, you have to use the lock on feature for those boxes, with L2, before web yanking them, and he needs to be not too close to them, around the middle of the warehouse, so you keep dodging and looking for opportunities to quickly press L2 to see if you can web yank a box from your current position and if it will hit him.

One thing I forgot to mention, ALL bosses in this are damage sponges, trying to defeat them by a bunch of combos won't do you any good, unless you're playing on an easier difficulty setting... all have this specific strategy that works, Shocker's really all about yanking those boxes, which is so frustrating to do because it often misses him, if you even manage to pull it off since he ALWAYS attacks you... still, I quite love this installment, as flawed as it is compared to the superior original.

>God I hate Mary Jane.
Why? I get hating modern depictions of MJ, but in the 90's comics she was essentially a kind and supportive sexy supermodel wife for Peter...
