Everyone talks about how dated this game is so I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it is when I played it for the first time recently. Literally one of the greatest games ever made

Yes we did. I loved hiding in a vent with a machine gun zooming into the wall and firing away to bring everyone elses frame rate to a snails pace.

For me it's Blood, Carmageddon and Shadow Warrior

Glad to hear it, what do you love about it? For me, it's the multiplicity of pathways and the options the player has for carrying objectives out in a different sequential order.

This was good, but not better than this.

Other honourable mentions:
Age of Empires
Diablo
Fallout
Carmageddon
MDK
Final Fantasy VII
Curse of Monkey Island
Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars for us Bri'ish
Gran Turismo

What a year for gaming. So many amazing franchises launched or given rocket fuel.

You’re a man of taste, I can tell. And honestly, I can see it as a top game of ‘97. There were objectively better titles, but I don’t think I kept going back to any of them (except 007) as much as wcw/nwo. Four players on that was too much fun.

Not him but I feel this way too. Yes, it runs like shit on the original hardware, but the game itself is really fun with the objective-based missions. There is more challenge and freedom in Goldeneye than in 90% of fps games released over the past decade.

If only that framerate were slightly higher.. but emulation solves that these days so no biggie.

exactly man, there are objectively better games but this is one I kept going back to, seriously addictive multiplayer. aki figured out how to do a wrestling engine right and it's surprising that it hasnt been copied.

The Konami games released on N64 were really quite good, also on a technical level with smooth framerates and drawdistance.
I just wished more developers had that priority back then
(yes Rare, I'm looking at you. why the fuck do you need to process 4k or more triangles per frame when you can get away with half those numbers)

I think abandoning that wrestling engine/control scheme was the worst thing they ever did to wrestling games. I remember playing wwe day of reckoning, which I believe was one of the first to use a different control scheme—the difference was noticeable and not good. People here sperg out all the time about the n64 controller, but it was perfect for that AKI wrestling setup. I still have custom characters for Wrestlemania 2k saved on Controller Paks.
