Not all final fantasy games are alike so it can become a bit apples and oranges.
Overall though, FF8 has to take it. The way they set up all the pre-rendered backgrounds for all those cinematic camera angles as you explore everywhere, the character writing and the plot being brilliant, the excessive attention to detail in combat animations, probably Nobuo's best overall music work of any game as it literally never ever misses, the complete unexpected mind-bending gothic kino of disc 4- I could just go on and on tbqh.
It's just so good. I played it for the first time in 2020 and it routinely gave me goosebumps.

I don't care for it. Part of it is a general grudge I hold against AAA modern games to this day for prioritising movie cutscenes over actual gameplay. In retrospect the mechanics are fine, but I found the sphere grid to be far too linear for the majority of the story, and I didn't really find the story to be that interesting. (I also had several friends play the game before me who gave me major spoilers, so it probably didn't help that I spent the whole game knowing some of the big twists).

I think the characters are just plain awful, from their personality to their designs. The world itself is for the most part uninteresting, and I don't care for the islander aesthetic at all. It's insanely linear with narrow corridors everywhere instead of an over world to explore, which turned the airship from a cool vehicle that enhances exploration to just choose from a menu and teleport there. The turn based combat is fine, but the sphere grid itself is tedium. Also fuck all those mini games like dodging lightning and stuff like that.

It's damn boring. I didn't find anything that strikes as plain *bad* it's more that the combat is very streamlined to the point it's bland (yes, even the grid, its "selling point" is bland), the typical stereotype of a 3D RPG's turn taking forever to animation doesn't help... and the world is linear. ok, so that part is plain bad after all. In other words, there's nothing to like about it, so why rank it above anything?

The game begins with the appearance of the four youthful Warriors of Light, the heroes of the story, who each carry one of the darkened Orbs. Initially, the Warriors of Light have access to the Kingdom of Coneria and the ruined Temple of Fiends. After the Warriors rescue Princess Sarah from the evil knight Garland, the King of Coneria builds a bridge that enables the Warriors of Light passage east to the town of Pravoka. There the Warriors of Light liberate the town from Bikke and his band of pirates and acquire the pirates' ship for their own use. The Warriors now embark on a chain of delivery quests on the shores of the Aldi Sea. First, they retrieve a stolen crown from the Marsh Cave for a king in a ruined castle, who turns out to be the dark elf Astos. Defeating him gains them the Crystal Eye, which they return to the blind witch Matoya in exchange for a herb needed to awaken the elf prince cursed by Astos. The elf prince gives the Warriors of Light the Mystic Key, which is capable of unlocking any door. The key unlocks a storage room in Coneria Castle which holds TNT. Nerrick, one of the dwarves of the Cave of Dwarf/Dwarf Village, destroys a small isthmus using the TNT, connecting the Aldi Sea to the outside world.[17]

After visiting the near-ruined town of Melmond, the Warriors of Light go to the Earth Cave to defeat a vampire and retrieve the Star Ruby, which gains passage to Sage Sarda's cave. With Sarda's Rod, the Warriors venture deeper into the Earth Cave and destroy the Earth Fiend, Lich. The Warriors of Light then obtain a canoe and enter Gurgu Volcano and defeat the Fire Fiend, Kary. The Levistone from the nearby Ice Cave allows them to raise an airship to reach the northern continents. After they prove their courage by retrieving the Rat's Tail from the Castle of Ordeal, the King of the Dragons, Bahamut, promotes each Warrior of Light. A kind gesture is repaid by a fairy, receiving special liquid that produces oxygen, and the Warriors use it to help defeat the Water Fiend, Kraken, in the Sunken Shrine. They also recover a Slab, which allows a linguist named Dr. Unne to teach them the Lefeinish language. The Lefeinish give the Warriors of Light access to the Floating Castle that Tiamat, the Wind Fiend, has taken over.[17] With the Four Fiends defeated and the Orbs restored, the Warriors open a portal in the Temple of Fiends, which takes them 2000 years into the past, to confront the creator of the Fiends. There the Warriors discover that the Four Fiends sent Garland (now the archdemon Chaos) back in time and he sent the Fiends to the future to do so, creating a time loop by which he could live forever.[19] The Warriors of Light defeat Chaos, thus ending the loop, and return to present, but their heroic deeds remain unknown outside of legend.[17]

Wrong. What actually happens is that the games gradually abandon the D&D mechanics over time. FF3 still has spell levels. FF4 still has multiple attacks per turn for physical attackers. You would have noticed this if you actually played original versions.

And frankly it makes sense because there are a lot of problems with D&D mechanics when you translate them to a single-player videogame. Final Fantasy also got more casual with each entry but that's a separate issue.

It's 5, no contest unfortunately. The job system, that they started the series with, lmao, was the best feature of the game and they dropped it for likely accessibility and thematic reasons. I've played up to 13 (except 2 and 3) and the only one I could imagine enjoying replaying is 5. What the fuck were they thinking dropping the job system, but then again they've even dropped turn based combat.

The first part is basically a minigame gauntlet, while the game keeps taking party members away from you. Great tunes but dull setting and extremely trivial plot. There are a few iconic scenes like the opera one, but overall it feels like a boring melodrama.
Second part is a lot better both in setting (which is more interesting, if anything), pacing, and gameplay, since finally party members are there to stay. The final dungeon and the final boss are just monumental.
Espers also seem like a prototype for the junction system, but worse.
It's ok-ish for the first part and good to great for the second part for me.
Notice though that i played FF6 after playing a lot of jrpg that came after (expecially Xenogears which i consider a better FF6) so perhaps that may be the reason why I found the first part so boring, although i must admit it falls short even compared to older games.

You don't. I get Enc-none by the end of disk 1, don't even fuck with random battles for the rest of the game and just the mandatory encounters and bosses alone give you enough AP for whatever you might need until you can reach cactuar island and then AP becomes a joke.

Also once you realize how the game actually works and that you don't need to spam summons or really use them at all you can just skip learning the summonmag+ and GFHP+ abilities altogether and begin learning actually useful skills from the beginning

Final Fantasy VII (PS1) is the best video game - period. We hold this truth to be self evident. Anyone who says otherwise is a contrarian. 1-3? Generic grindfests. 4? Good, but forgettable. 5? Same. 6? Very close. 8? Rinoa in space ruined everything. 9? Fucking kek. 10? Soulful, but no. 12? Eh. 13? LMAO 15? Will never be a real main game. I don't know if there is a 16 out yet but FF7 will eternally reign supreme. Just don't bother trying. Play 7. Play it again. And again. You don't need more. You just don't. Watch Advent Children or play Crisis Core for variation but stay the fuck away from Remake and from my wife Tifa.

VII genuinely has the best video game OST of all time, its music combined with the story and it's pacing are just so tightly interwoven that it elevates it into the stratosphere.
I really like IX a lot, but i think every other entry is trash and they've never held my interest until the end.
I dont know how you could listen to FF7's music and not immediately understand it's emotional resonance.

Of the ones I've played...

VII

VIII / XII

IX

XIII

X

X is a fine game in and of itself but definitely the worst of the ones I've played. XIII gets a lot of flack but has a strong argument for best gameplay in the series, especially late game when doing the optional challenges. Very engaging. Always baffled by people who love X but hate XIII.

XII may have been peak first playthrough experience for me - loved exploring Ivalice, especially without random encounters - but not nearly as replayable as PS1 era.

IX first disc had goat potential but unfortunately goes downhill as the game goes on. The slow battle pace didn't bother me back in the day, but recently upon attempting a new playthrough, I just got bored and gave up on it.

>We were all big fans of Wizardry and Ultima back then. Even though Dragon Quest had come out, in our minds, there still wasn't anything quite comparable to Ultima or Wizardry. That's the kind of game that Sakaguchi and Hiromichi Tanaka and I were interested in. As far as my role in the game went, I was mainly in charge of the battle system and battle sequences. For that, I tried to make it as close to Dungeons & Dragons as possible. That was my goal.

>Weird because the rest of the series seems like your typical monkeys copying Wizardry and Dragon Quest without knowing anything about pen and paper rpgs.

That's because Kawazu left the series after FF2 and started the SaGa series, which continues to build and innovate on actual RPG mechanics and concepts and blows FF out of the water
