The Playstation has never had a "1" in it's official name (aside from the distinct PSOne model). "PS1" is only used as an acronym because it is consistently formatted with PS2, PS3, etc. PSX was absolutely the standard abbreviation at the time over simply PS. Normies didn't have a need to abbreviate it, they just called it Playstation. There are tons of articles, old forum messages, and websites in this thread showing that it was commonly abbreviated as PSX while it was current. OP asked simply "PSX or PS1" and while I agree that "PS1" makes plenty of sense in the context of later Playstations, to deny that PSX was the standard abbreviation until the later consoles is asinine.

The first time I ever heard PSX used was reading Die Hard GameFan magazine. Even back then, I think GameFan mentioned that PSX was the code name for the PS1 console. Gaming magazines and the gaming press liked using PSX as an abbreviation, because 'PS' was a bit too vague at times. In small information columns it was easier to save letters and use PSX (which most of the readers would pick up on). But I would say that PSX was replaced with PS1, the moment that the PS2 was announced.

Also why do Mexicans call all playstations "p?" Whenever I hear them refer to PlayStation 1 2 or whatever it's P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, etc. I don't speak their tongue, is S too hard for them? Really this is what PSX denialists should be panicking over, not the fact people say "PS1."

Official nintendo magazines were calling the N64 "Ultra", and Ultra even had an official logo (unlike PSX), see: >>10239863
You can also find a lot of internet posts from the late 90s and early 00s still calling it the "Ultra 64".
Still doesn't mean we should claim the N64's official abbreviation should be NU64.
The same applies to PSX, it was a pseudo-official way people had to call it, because "PS-X" was sort of like a codename, but the official abbreviation is, and always will be, just PS, not PSX nor PS1. People use PS1 out of convenience I guess and because PS might seem a bit generic. You can use PSX too if you want, but it's as relevant as calling the N64 the Ultra.

PSX was a commonly used abbreviation. It differentiated from other things (like the Phantasy Star series) which "PS" could be mistaken for.
PS1 is commonly used now, because it's in line with how PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 are abbreviated.
No one called it PS1 at the time, because no one knew there would be a PS2.
No one ever said "PSX" out loud because the internet was still nerd territory in the 90's. You just called it "The Playstation."
Gaming websites and magazines did frequently use PSX over PS1, and some still do, because PSX was the standard.
Anyone arguing otherwise in this thread is just trolling.

Capcom and Sega using PSX (or "PS-X", which is the accurate official codename by Sony)? That's proof for what? I already said Nintendo themselves used Ultra too and even had a logo and actually produced units of the console that had the Ultra 64 logo, that's a lot more than third parties and unofficial magazines using "PSX", yet, we all know the official abbreviation is N64, not NU64.
It's as if I posted pic related and was like "guys, N64's abbreviation should be NUS (Nintendo Ultra Sixty-four)". Just no.
PS and N64, like it or not.
If you yourself want to use PSX, P.S.X., PS-X or whatever just for nostalgic reasons or for aesthetics reasons, I support you, but when you try to push a false narrative that might confuse younger people who weren't alive back in the day, then I feel like stepping in and pointing out your logic flaws.

Really do think calling it PSX is stupid. Was fine when it was just a codename for the system but how it managed to stick I'll never understand. There's genuinely no valid argument you could make to keep using it, not in the 90s and especially not now. Nobody is calling the N64 the Ultra 64 still, and to make a contemporary example nobody is calling the Switch the NX and just like some of the PSX cope in this thread pretty much all official Switch products have NX in the product code and yet still nobody is calling it that. It's almost like it would be stupid to do that or something.

I've never called it the PSX and never will. I just say Playstation and retroactively after Playstation 2 its now the PS1 which is just fine.

How do milanunciosplebs search for the actual PSX (PS2 model)?
Seriously now, this thread is so over.
PS-X (not PSX) was the codename.
PSX was an unofficial abbreviation.
Sony themselves never were really clear but they seem to prefer not using any abbreviation for the first Playstation, and simply prefer to call it PlayStation (or PS one, as seen here: >>10242002
Still, the very logo of Playstation IS a P and an S, and Sony call it "PS logo". They keep using it in newer systems too so it's more of a general brand logo than specifically just for the first one.
Japanese magazines (endorsed by Sony officially) used PS, though, and not PS1 nor PSX.
So, you can call it PSX if you want, it's cool and nostalgic, but not official and Sony released an actual PSX which is a PS2 model.
People in Japan, the original country of the system, use PS.
