The first time I ever heard PSX used was reading Die Hard GameFan magazine. Even back then, I think GameFan mentioned that PSX was the code name for the PS1 console. Gaming magazines and the gaming press liked using PSX as an abbreviation, because 'PS' was a bit too vague at times. PSX was a commonly used abbreviation. It differentiated from other things (like the Phantasy Star series) which "PS" could be mistaken for.
PS1 is commonly used now, because it's in line with how PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 are abbreviated.

Really do think calling it PSX is stupid. Was fine when it was just a codename for the system but how it managed to stick I'll never understand. There's genuinely no valid argument you could make to keep using it, not in the 90s and especially not now. Nobody is calling the N64 the Ultra 64 still, and to make a contemporary example nobody is calling the Switch the NX and just like some of the PSX cope in this thread pretty much all official Switch products have NX in the product code and yet still nobody is calling it that. It's almost like it would be stupid to do that or something.

I've never called it the PSX and never will. I just say Playstation and retroactively after Playstation 2 its now the PS1 which is just fine.

This. It logically couldn't have been called the PS1 before there was a PS2. It was always the PSX. I think originally Sony of America wanted to just call it the PSX because PlayStation didn't sound cool enough for the West or something, but changed their mind at the last minute.

I read gaming magazines incessantly in the 90s.
PSX was used everywhere in print and online discussion.
I may have used the acronym out loud a handful of times, but 99% of the time it was PlayStation fully pronounced. It rolls easily off the tongue like Saturn.
Super Nintendo is a mouthful and was pronounced as the acronym about half the time. You would get punched for saying "Sness" around these parts.

There's basically 3 positions here:
1. Young people who think PSX was never used
2. People who ackwnowledge PSX was popularly used, and that it has its origins in PS-X being a codename that appears in the bios of the console
3. People who don't want to let go of the PSX nickname and want to force others to believe PS is not the actual real acronym (which it officially is)

I have never, ever seen any official Sony print that says anything besides PlayStation. That guy posted that poster up there and it says PlayStation about every 5 words and never abbreviates it. The stickers on the back of the consoles just say PlayStation. The closest thing is the official magazine abbreviating as "PSM" but their style guide requires calling the console PlayStation absolutely every time as well. It wasn't until the PS2 and PSOne that they actually started doing that.

PS-X (not PSX) was the codename.
PSX was an unofficial abbreviation.
Sony themselves never were really clear but they seem to prefer not using any abbreviation for the first Playstation, and simply prefer to call it PlayStation (or PS one, as seen here: >>10242002
Still, the very logo of Playstation IS a P and an S, and Sony call it "PS logo". They keep using it in newer systems too so it's more of a general brand logo than specifically just for the first one.
Japanese magazines (endorsed by Sony officially) used PS, though, and not PS1 nor PSX.
So, you can call it PSX if you want, it's cool and nostalgic, but not official and Sony released an actual PSX which is a PS2 model.
People in Japan, the original country of the system, use PS.
