Why?

As far as Madoolikes go, it's alright. Of similar playing games, it's not particularly stand out but has a focus on rigid feeling challenges that aren't satisfying to overcome but feel rote and full of friction due to a combat system too involved for the control the game offers you.

It's very important in that it was the first commercial and critical success that mixed RPG mechanics with an action game

All those modern games which add RPG mechanics to everything are in a way, all descendants of Zelda 2

that's dumb. just because it came first doesn't mean it directly inspired many other games. there are many historical examples of games that technically started some genres, except few liked them and they didn't inspire much.
I'm not sure many games actually copied what Zelda 2 did. certainly not it's weird overworld. you could MAYBE argue that games like Wonder Boy owe something to Zelda 2, but then again, the similarity is only that you explore a big world and it's a side scroller / RPG where you use a sword.
>>10228671
>Why?
it is ambitious, but way, way too rough around edges. the combat is a weird mix of Street Fighter and Zelda with stiff controls. the "adventure" element is not on the level of top-down Zelda dungeons. the difficulty is just brutal sometimes. the overworld is awkward. it never feels like a game that should become a "blueprint".

I'll explain it so even someone with autism understands.
The bubbles plus the hazard of the axes prove a decent challenge normally. This player is showing off their skill at Zelda 2 by intentionally not using the shield as if to say to his enemy, "Look, I don't even need it." Then, he teabags to put the proverbial period onto the sentence.

I'm pretty sure there were plenty of similar games that never made it out of Japan. What about Tritorn, for example? https://youtu.be/8U1v6QdKrUA?t=193

My point exactly. None of these were worldwide best sellers, and those are the trend makers.

I'd still say Zelda 2 had a lot of great ideas that had potential to be ground breaking, and still feel semi-fresh years later. the problem is, none of them were polished, and the game was quite unfriendly

The only trends that mattered were trends within Japan, and AoL wasn't especially innovative there. It's not as if AoL prompted USA developers to start making clones.

Because it is honest to god a terrible game through and through. It's a genuine chore to play every step of the way, and that's with emulation tricks like save states and rewind to counter the bullshit with your own bullshit. There is absolutely zero value in this game.

This label should be retired now that Zeldaslop is a thing. Zelda 2 was a major console release. If it's some shit that's on a handheld (with the lone exception of Link's Awakening because it was a major release at the time) or some crap nobody cares about like the game with 4 Links, then it's Zeldaslop.
