I remember it being promoted in Game Informer and I was interested for the whole paragraph until they mentioned the price. It was like $1,500 so almost nobody bought one. I also remember reading years later that the dev tools were much more limited than a real PS1 dev kit so only rudimentary games were ever made for it. I think a handful of games actually got released officially in Japan but it was largely a bust.

I never understood why the indies scene never made big plans on PS1.

I mean, there are 110 million PS1s, 150 million PS2s and 90 million PS3s, that's 350 million machines that can play PS1 games.

Admittedly they are no longer all used, but it will still be well above the 11 million Dreamcasts on which the guys made Pier Solar!

most of the homebrew efforts are either focused on mass-appeal systems that defined their eras, or on niche hardware with weird features that attracts a cult following. PS1 definitely isn't the second, but as for the first, I guess it just didn't make any big impression on in people. Not that it wasn't popular or influential or anything, but can you really name something specific to PS1 that makes people love that system, as opposed to just loving the games that happen to be on it? I feel like most of the popular homebrew machines have something iconic about their hardware itself. The playstation, meanwhile, is in modern standards about as close to a "generic game playing machine" as you can get. There's just nothing really interesting about it to grab onto. I figure it's the same for the super famicom; Hugely popular but you never see people devving for it like they do other iconic hardware (mega drive probably most obvious contrast to the sufami in that regard).

The Net Yaroze is covered in something called cerakote. A kind of ceramic paint.
It's theoretically possible to repaint an SCPH-100X with this paint, install a mod chip, and you have a DIY Net Yaroze.

>I never understood why the indies scene never made big plans on PS1.
It basically comes down to ease of development. There are modern dev kits for the megadrive and dreamcast that allow you to make decent 2D games without too much hassle. The other consoles like the SNES and PS1 are more difficult to work with and so it's not so easy to make an "easy mode" dev kit.
And finally you can sell games on certain platforms much more readily than others. You can get cartridges and MIL-CDs made without too much difficulty, but AFAIK no one has gone to the effort of trying to manufacture a spec compliant PS1 disc so any game sold would have to come with a big "WARNING: Must have working mod chip!" which customers will not read and then leave angry reviews.

I've seen here that PlayStation was such a huge success because its inexpensive and well-documented development hardware was available rather early-on. When trying to read about old dev kits, I can't seem to find shit apart from grainy photographs and basic descriptions/model numbers.
Any information floating around on the more rare and obscure dev hardware? I'm talking about stuff like the DTL-H505 devkit, as well as the ISA/PCI based dev cards. Especially the DTL-H505, serials indicate that there were hundreds produced, but there's next-to-no information about it online
