is this really the best metal gear game?

>> No.10226606

>>10226597
Arguably the most memorable.
Definitely the best of the classic style Metal Gear games, before Camo and rotating cameras.

>> No.10226608

i remember when people said it was the worst one and that 3 was the best thing ever.

>> No.10226620

Aged better than 3. Doesn't have bloat shit that interrupts the gameplay, doesn't have meme mechanics like 3 does. Its very light-hearted in gameplay with great presentation of 60fps.

Yes, but even with the original camera, the gameplay feels like a deviation from the older MG style in all the prior games. That's not to say it's bad, just different.

>> No.10226678

For as long as I can remember, people on /v/ built a cult of personality around MGS3 and acted like it was so epic as to replace the Bible itself in our culture. When I finally played the Metal Gear games, I found it wasn't as good as 2 for a number of reasons.
>Snake Eater is the only song from the game I can hum from the top of my head
>Very linear
>The story doesn't really say anything
I was told the ending was the most gut-wrenching moment in the history of art but I had no emotional response. It's a good game with a fun James Bond plot but if you think it's better than 1 or 2 you believe in the tooth fairy

>Snake Eater is the only song from the game I can hum from the top of my head
It does feel like Snake Eater overshadows the rest of the MGS3 OST. I thought it was telling (and a bit jarring) that the final boss in 4 used the MGS1 and MGS2 Tanker alert themes, before breaking into What a Thrill.

Arguably, sure. The first 3 are all incredibly good, and even the 4th one is excellent. Personally I think it's hard to beat the straightforward story and aesthetic of the MGS which establish the series' popularity, but I enjoyed MGS2 the most.

No video game will ever live up to that hype.
MGS3 was literally made because Harry Gregson-Williams said he didn't want to do another video game unless it was an orchestral score.
So being the absolute western-boo, Kojima decided to write the antithesis of MGS2 by making it a goofy james bond type 60's spy flick JUST so he could work with Gregson-Williams again.

nah. its fun but the plant feels like one massive warehouse\sewer level, the last hour of gameplay with the swimming, overly long sniper section, boring escorting and mid boss fights. mgs3 remedies the first issue and almost avoids the second, but i dislike the prison break and escorting Eva.
>>10226678
>Very linear
i dont think this was an issue considering backtracking in MGS2 wasnt that interesting to begin with.
>The story doesn't really say anything
it does tho. its about how talented, idealistic people became alienated because of their contributions to a rivalry between two nations\ideologies. The Boss's monologue and Naked Snake's turncoating gives it away. a problem MGS2 and 3 both have is making the game's most interesting themes relevant throughout the entire story, but i think MGS2 suffers worse. The Most Profound Moment in Gaming History happens 10 minutes before the game ends and isn't that relevant to the game's story, which was more of a Truman Show scenario rather than it being about the unregulated flow of information. MGS3 has this problem too (especially with the relative lack of cutscenes and codec conversations) but at least it shows the effects the themes have on its characters, including Sokolov much earlier on. despite it being one of the most unique takes on an anti-war message i know of this goes underappreciated, i guess the monologging is still too show-don't-tell for most people.

I see your point but snake is a simulacra of big boss. Big boss was the perfect soldier, the one to defeat the boss, the greatest soldier in WW2. After the events of mgs3 big boss wasn't a puppet Anymore, or at least didn't want to be. So he started msf and became anti government. Solid Snake was the perfect soldier, the one to take down big boss, the greatest soldier to ever live. After the events of mgs1, solid snake started philanthropy the anti government group. Though, snake is a more morally sound individual both him and big boss eventually became obsessed with metal gears... Then you get Raiden which is not a clone but was solidus's favorite child soldier, who was chosen to be the metric for brainwashing soldiers with the sss. I think it's pretty great story telling minus a few plot holes.

You're mistaking Naked and Solid Snake in the story with the meta player character that is forced to ask incredibly stupid questions they should know the answer to. All for the sake of the (at the time) tiny portion of the audience who were too stupid to read the manual or watch the briefing. The worst example is Snake shouting "Metal Gear?! to clarify
like, if the gameplay is good but the writing is dumb, it becomes a decent stealth-action game but with huge fucking cutscenes that are just gibberish
and in the reverse scenaio you have an interesting, albeit weird, action movie, but suddenly im tediously following someone and then theres a huge shitty bossfight

know what i mean?
i dont remember a point like that, where one part or the other fell off, from 1 + 2. theyre just much more solid overall. prolly because he didnt plan on making any more after 2, so the writing comes off more phoned-in

The advantage of V, at least on PC, is that you can mod out some of the weaker elements of the game. But it's not /vr/, so I won't go into detail.

NTA, but they may be referring to the fact that BB wasn't originally written as David's father. And then when he was, there was nothing about cloning and Les Enfants Terribles until later. So BB became more of a clone of Solid as a character, to fit how the latter is a biological clone of the former, I'm guessing.

Metal Gear 1 doesn’t happen in a jungle. That’s 2. 1 is just a base crawl.
