Yeah, I'm glad I got it (years ago). Monitor has some burn-in which is pretty much the norm for dedicated cabs with long periods of relevancy. I have a handful of NOS stickers for it but totally peeling off the old ones feels like sacrilege. I DO plan to put the gun decals on, though, since I already had to add back in original Sega guns as a previous owner had swapped them for Happ guns. I imagine a lot of cabs are missing those gun stickers, should probably scan mine since I don't know of anywhere selling repros (in fact I'd imagine that a lot don't realize the guns are even supposed to have decals in the first place).

Bit of Trivia:

House of the Dead 1 was so popular that Sega's arcade factories couldn't keep up with demand. There was a wait list to get the machine, and customers were limited to purchasing just 1 machine. For the first year (and somewhat into the following year) it came out, it was very hard to get the machine. Demand was huge. It was one of Sega's most popular machines.

In addition, many arcades installed a black privacy curtain around the screen of machine because of the mature content. Blood and Gore like this hadn't been done before. I played on a machine that had a black curtain around it. To ve honest, it just added to the cool factor and improved the horror movie vibe even more.

That's cool, it makes sense that it was so popular. Too bad the Saturn port was so subpar, though to be fair there was no way the Saturn could get it to look as good as the Model 2. Still have the US Saturn version, still a fun thing to mess around with if only to enjoy the jankiness.
I know I came across a few of the standard pedestal models (none with the privacy curtain) as well as one rear projection, but I think I also have a vague recollection of finding one of the upright cabs which had the form factor of a Virtua Cop (pic). I also have a Virtua Cop 2 PCB to swap into the THotD cab.

>Such a shame these don’t exist anymore.
Great choice. One of my favoritrs.A few still do exist, but all are in private hands or storage. Unfortunately, none are still in public arcades.

For sure:
I know 1 to 2 still exist in Japan in storage somewhere (based on my contacts in Japan), 1 still in exists in America, another potentially in Australia. I know for a fact the American one still exists. I know because I saw it go up for auction 10 years ago, and some American arcade collector bought it for their private collection. I know of several other potential locations as well.

Namco never released hard numbers, but the number wasn't high. I compiled a list of every known location that ever had it that I could find. At most...no more than 50 units were made over a 5 year period between 1993 and 1998. Realistically...maybe somewhere between 30 to 40 units.

I spoke to several arcade owners who used to run this Ridge Racer Full Scale machine. The biggest issue is that there are no more spare parts. These machines would be left running almost 24/7 in arcades with screens running. Parts burn out. If a custom chip burns out on the arcade motherboard, you could pay to send it to Namco for repairs. They would replace the chip and ship it back. And Ridge Racer Full Scale used 3 huge Arcade boards that had to synchronize together.

During the 90s, it was easier to get repairs done. Then during the 2000s, Namco became reluctant to repair them for arcade owners. It became a hassle to get it repaired. Often having to contact Namco Japan directly and mail the broken part. It wasn't cheap.

There's a story of one guy saying he tried to get his board repaired and the Japanese Namco guy on the phone sighed when he mentioned Ridge Racer and said "We found one last replacement board in the warehouse and are sending it to you. But after this we officially aren't going to repair them anymore. We want to move on." That was in 2015.

This photos actually confirms what I heard. That Australia had at least 4 to 5 Ridge Racer Full Scale machines. Australia absolutely loved arcades and bought several Rusge Racer Full Scales. Is there anything that could be done to restore arcades to their former glory?

I went into Dave and Buster and was annoyed at the sheer amount of nonsense ticket games. They werent even video games. Just rigged carnival games like dropping balls in cups or stopping a spinning light on a certain spot.

I feel like if this is what arcades were like for me growing up in the 90s and 2000s, then I would have laughed and never gone to arcades.

Not really. Home consoles and computer games have many times greater budgets than any arcade game used to have. To make a lightgun shooter on-par with something like Call of Duty in terms of graphics and fun factor, it'd take an investment of years to recoup the costs just from one game. It used to be that arcade games were the cutting edge of gaming technology, while home consoles were far behind. But that hasn't been the case since like 2000, where the sheer amount of money being made allowed consoles to soar past arcade games. The "wow" factor of arcade games really dissipates when you're looking at graphics worse than what you have at home.

Also the gameplay experience is orders of magnitude more shallow than what's available at home. The interest simply isn't there anymore among the general population.

For an arcade to succeed it needs to offer an experience that you can't get on home consoles. Arcade Game makers realized it was a mistake to put their arcade games on console. That's why you haven't seen a Dance Dance Revolution game on a console since Playstation 2. Konami won't allow it. They make far more money selling their DDR arcade machines to businesses.

For arcades to succeed, game makers need to keep their games exclusive to arcades. They can't be greedy like they were in the 90s and release on console and arcade machines.

I always enjoyed the Super Deluxe Crypt Killer arcade cabinet. It's the only 3 player arcade lightgun game that I know of. I played it once at a random mall arcade.

It's an odd story. Apparently none of Crypt Killer deluxe cabinets survived afaik. A real true tragedy. Even the internet barely has any pictures of the Deluxe cabinet. It's more rare than Ridge Racer Full Scale that you anons love to talk about.

If anyone knows of any still existing please me know. I would like to play it.

I visited San Francisco last year. They have a retro arcade on the Pier called Musee Mechanique. Half of the arcade is dedicated to antique mechanical arcade machines. Apparently they have some of the rarest and last surviving mechanical games in the entire world. All other machines have been lost or destroyed. Stuff from the 1800s and early 1900s. It was really interesting.

Excellent Taste. The arcade version was the best. PS2 version sucks monkey balls. They changed so much.

There was an awesome house of the dead arcade machine that was pretty big and had a pump action shotgun where the pump action actually worked for reloading. I think it was house of the dead, i can't remember, it was like 20 years ago that i played it. It was only 2 players though i'm pretty sure

That's actually Crypt Killer. It was made by Konami and is another undead lightgun game. They tried to compete against Sega's House of the Dead. It uses a shotgun and you can pump the shotgun for a reload.

House of the Dead you have to shoot offscreen to reload your weapon.

They were in arcades at one point so sure. I often wonder how much longer those pods will last. Only like 30 pods were ever made right? And all the remaining pods were purchased and are still constantly used. I hope whatever owner who has them has set aside some pods to use for spare parts.

What's the image limit on these threads before the thread starts sliding off the board? I have a bunch of retro arcade pictures I want to share but this thread is already at 42 pictures. If 50 pics is the bump limit, then I won't bother and will just make a new thread.

You're cool, the limit is more than 50

I know I'm in a minority but I always preferred time crisis 3 to 2. All the games in the series are great though, if I'm ever gonna buy a cabinet, it'll be a time crisis machine. Genuinely a shame light gun games have basically died cause arcades don't exist in the same capacity.

Don't worry anon. BIG BUCK HUNTER carries on the legacy of lightgun games. Americans love it.

I don't know the true number, but it was vanishingly low. I got the chance to play these at Navy Pier in Chicago a few times, and they are a real experience. I always find myself wondering what a similar something like this would look and feel like with today's technology.

The arcade machines you love and grew up with aren't made anymore because the people that made them left the company a long time ago. Namco was filled with brilliant arcade designers during the 80s and 90s who were willing to take risks. But those people have left or retired. Same with Sega and many other companies. Today, these companies are risk adverse and will only make safe arcade machines that sell. They don't like the idea of risky arcade games anymore. It's why you will never see a sequel to pic related.

I mean it does exist in some capacity I'm Japan (look at some of the Mech arcade games that exist now) but yeah it seems to happen with all media. Corporations don't know what the medium is so they let developers have free reign, eventually enough data exists so they stop letting them experiment. Happened with film in the 80s, music in the 50s, and games in the 2010s.
