hey i'm goin through the final fantasy series for the first time rn, gonna take a break currently as i just beat 6 the other day but could i ask for any finfan aficionados here, which among these sequels are worth playing/watching/reading? includin for the nonretro games but i'm probably not gonna play those right away, 10 long games spread apart is already a lot and i spent too much dosh on the steam summer sale this year as is.

:( well that's a shame but in a way kind of a relief since most of the games i've been wanting to play inbetween the main titles are primarily vns, feel like i'd get bored halfway into em and start playing some platformer i've never played in a series i enjoy a lot like say castlevania x68000 or the gameboy mega mans

If you're gonna play TAY, seek the WiiWare version. You'll find some enjoyment out of it if you temper your expectations and realize it's just a Japanese cellphone game. Interlude is utterly pointless. Don't even think about the 3D version, it cuts a lot of corners and misses a lot of content.
But think of the Final Fantasy sequels like those direct-to-video Disney sequels.

Everything is worth it up to FF9, except for the FF7 Jap only phone game you can't play anyways. Seriously though, everything after the PSX era isn't even Final Fantasy so don't waste your time. Play the Chrono games instead

I avoided X for decades because I'd heard so many negative things about it. Then I got it at a pawn shop for two bucks a few years ago and absolutely loved the battle mechanics. The story was more or less fine, too.

The battle system was ok, but 6-9 were better in that respect. No overworld, Korean MMO grind for equipment, and insect brained story make it a firm "no" from me.

Of those, the XIII sequels are the most worth playing, which should tell you about the quality of the rest.
