These games filtered me hard. I like shitty graphics like PS1 ones but the graphics here are way too shit. Not a deal breaker, but the gameplay is unfun to me. "Click the larva 5 times in 5 turns to get based XP points!" is really boring. I don't like mouse controls like that in general. I play a lot of retro games but this is one of the few ones that filtered me.
I loved New Vegas however.

One of the ways in which Fallout 1 was, in my humblest of opinion, a stronger title was that it had a much more more stronger sense of focus on tone of being a post-apocalyptic. It was around 40,60 years after the bombs fell, the biggest city is the Hub, which is just where caravans meet up to trade supplies. The closest thing to residents besides that were the Highwatch family (R.I.P.), junkies and the two criminal organizations.
The rest of the settlements in Fallout 1 still had a very small sense of scale, and was very western. Even Skull Junkyard (or whatever place the Gunners are), had Deathclaws and a toxic waste issue within it's borders. This contributes to the feeling of the original Fallout that isn't captured much in games, of the humanity co-existing and being dominated by nature, not the other way around.
Compared that to Fallout 2. People tend to focus on the references, but that's missing the trees for the forest. Because overall, the tone has gotten more cartoonish, less wild. There's no Deathclaws two map cells away from town, there's all sorts of settlements in which are big in scale, like NCR, New Reno, Modoc. People are taming the west, technology and living standards are progressing, and instead of just one crime family, there's four of them. Not to mention all the sex and shenanigans you can do. But the car itself is much more emblematic of the issue. We had to walk the waste our selves, now we have a car and have to refuel it. Not to mention San Fransisco being again, so cartoony. We went from taming to dominating the waste. It's a real shame that the only group to degrade was the Brotherhood of Steel: I wish everywhere else was worst.
This is why I find Fallout 1 to be better. Both games are great, but 1 transcends being a game and becomes a great experience, while 2 is just a game.

Is there a way to get rid of the flickering UI and performance issues I have with Fallout 1 (1.1)? Basically some elements of the UI (like the cursor) flicker in and out of existance and the game isn't as smooth as it could be.
I have no unofficial patches/ fixes installed apart from the Hi-Res patch (which I installed only because I read it did other things too and I hoped it would fix this problem, but it didn't).
Wrappers like dgvoodoo2 also don't help.
Unrelated, but
>tfw no up-to-date sfall for FO1
I really hate it when a really good game gets a sequel on an upgraded version of the same engine and every cool fan fix/ QOL addition only ever gets developed for the sequel because it has a "better" engine despite the original game being arguably cooler. Worse is when people even port the OG to the sequel to some degree rather than fix compatibility issues of the original game (games like Thief, Fallout or Myth for example).

How so, Dear NMA mega Autist? I know that Bethesda, especially since after 2010 or 2012, thinks most of its customers are stupid. However, I do not share your inherent seething hate for Bethesda, nor most of Fallout 2's humor. I'm not denying the compatibility issues of the original game, though. It's not the retro buttons per se. Taketh save load buttons in fallout one. There's a whole welded panel that could serve as the quit button, but no you gotta click an 8x8 pixel button. It worked in the days of mouse-only but it's annoying today. I refunded fallout 1 recently because of this and other, mostly UI/UX issues. The same issue is present in Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri but to a lesser degree and mitigated by the fact that the game is totally awesome.
