I love the psx and every year you enlightened trolls shine a light on at least a few new games I want to try out (I had no idea alien trilogy used modern shooter controls, now it’s on my list), however the 64 is just pure joy and fun to me. It’s the fun multiplayer games and honestly no other console did it better overall in this category. You honestly can’t go wrong w either system but gun to head, 64 for me.

I'd say that N64 has higher highs than PS1... but the PS1's library is so much more vast and diverse, that I could see myself choosing it as my only console at all if I had too, I just feel it's more worth it, also DualShock is more comfy to me than the N64's controller, it's also good, but it was an experiment, while the DualShock was a SNES controller with analogs and handles, safe, but essentially perfect too. Also, PS1 Memory Card and start up SFX are just peak SOUL and I can't get enough of it. Not having Mario 64, OoT, MM, Banjo, etc... it's a pain, buy PS1 has good options in all genres, so it makes up for it.

>> No.10211878

>>10211805
Well, the specific framing of this question biases it to ps1. After all, you can only pick one ever meaning I got to consider ps1 for the library. It's in disguise a "games to bring to deserted island" question.
I'd generally choose n64-but then occasionally I might want mvc or find some jrpg to try and I already played oot. Even then it's tough to abandon the idea of using the island time for replaying some n64 titles, maybe give a go to Pokemon Stadium, but mvc wins overall.

The N64 is carried on the back of three games. Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64. The rest is mid or made for retard babies like Banjo-Kazooie.

>> No.10212479

Console comparisons should be a retired topic unless it's comparing hardware or different versions of a game. It just leads to the same (inaccurate) talking points being repeated every thread, and it's not even useful to anyone now that old consoles are cheap and emulation is easy.

>> No.10212484

This.

I had both as a kid. I played the hell out of my PSX. Had a modchip, but also bought plenty of games too. The PSX library is absolutely enormous, and while there's some trash it is still surprisingly high quality overall. I consider the best of the PSX to be the top tier of all of retro gaming. Among many other great games, the PSX was the main platform of the golden age of JRPGs.

By contrast, on my N64 I played Mario 64, GoldenEye, Mario Kart, Ocarina of Time... and that's it. I had a few other games, but I didn't enjoy them. I also thought the PSX had more aesthetically pleasing "early 3D" capabilities. I don't like the *extremely* low-res textures on the N64. You can also palpably feel how the N64 developers were constrained on cartridge size. Just feels like there's little "content" in each game.

PS1 is my main console at this point. The shit I play and replay the most is:

A Tier:
Crash 1, 2, 3
FF 7, 8, 9
SFA 2, 3, MVC

B Tier:
Tomb Raider
Metal Slug
Metal Gear
Megaman 7
Megaman X4
Mobile Light Force

C Tier:
Spyro 1

I pretty much have around 20ish games I just replay the shit out of. Whats the N64 nerd equivalent of me? Like I'm probably pretty autistic and I know Mario and Zelda are really good, but man is there enough games for it to kinda be the only console you play for years? Not meme'ing genuinely curious.

Do they make N64 worthwhile to own? Hell yeah! Do they make it worth owning one OVER the PS1? No, not even close. PS1's library is just too rich, and for every major N64 title, PS1 had an answer, the same cannot be said for N64 unfortunately... still both are damn good and owning both is ideal, but if you can only have one then PS1 just gives more value.

This actually touches on the massive divide between ps1 enthusiasts and 64 troons.

64 troons are the people who just want to play the same 5 games for the rest of their lives. They're easily amused midwits and naturally this makes them goyslop consumers in other areas of life. They have nothing interesting to say because there's nothing left to say about the only 5 games they've ever enjoyed, yet they continue to blabber on anyway. This is what makes them so hated, it's obnoxious to blabber endlessly about the same old boring shit we've all heard a million times.

64 troons then project and assume the ps1 enthusiasts just replay mgs and ff tactics over and over, but actually the ps1 enthusiasts are novelty seekers always looking for a new "hidden gem" to unearth. There's always a new ps1 game getting translated, or one that flew under your radar because Sony was shooting games at you like bullets from a gatling gun.

We are not the same.

I think the only other console he had was a SNES and that's because he likes strategy games. eventually bought a PC and played civ and Warcraft etc.

Since you did not specify games, get the Playstation, it's at least useful as a CD player - the N64 is a paperweight if you have no games on it.

If you also have games for either one, but no accessories, then the N64 since it can save on carts.

If you have a shitload of memory carts, then the Playstation is the better choice.

N64, because my PS2 is backwards compatible.

The N64 has a very small, pitiful library, but a lot of the PS1's library is also better on the Dreamcast given that it almost always had the better ports, especially if they ran on Sega NAOMI gear. The PS1 still wins on virtue of having the most niche shit that even games like Doshin the Giant or NGE on the N64 can't really match up to. We're talking shit like Meremanoid, Kaze no Notam, Hellnight, Terracon, hell, even random platformers like Johnny Bazookatone have a lot more interesting things going on than your typical N64 fare.

Reminds me of all those 'hidden gems' reccomendations for the (s)nes or genesis, basically obscure stuff that is too shitty to play but people still pretend to like it as they ran out of the good stuff ages ago.

The N64's peaks are higher than the PS1's, but the PS1's library of solid 10/12 titles is so large that you won't miss stuff like Ocarina or Mario 64.

>> No.10217248

Was stated a few times before but indeed, the n64 does have higher highs, but the sheer size of excelent games on the psx gives it a preference.

But in the end any sane person would just play both though.

Since there are already two "which console would you prefer" threads here, someone should make another one asking "would you prefer the gamecube or the wii?"
Personally, I'd go with the wii, since it has Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario All Stars.

It also has backwards compatibility from what I can remember... which would make the choice somewhat pointless, though I could be remembering it wrong.

You are guaranteed quality with Mario. The average kid had between 10-20 games. The nintendo kid picking his games has an overwhelming advantage over the sony kid picking up shit like jumping flash and bubsy just from IP knowledge alone. The fact that all the smash hits on 64 are usually 4 player classics is a bonus. Sure there were rentals, but I probably only rented 20 or so games that cycle. I still feel the outcome would usually benefit the 64 kid unless they were well-read which most kids weren't. N64 to this day is the king party console, and if you were a sibling, replayability, multiplayer and a consistent brand with soul were essential. It's the best console for its targeted demographic.

>and for every major N64 title, PS1 had an answer
I don't know. There is nothing of the caliber of Star Fox, Wave Race, F-Zero X, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark Pokemon Stadium 1-2, Paper Mario, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mischief Makers, Mario Party 2, Mystical Ninja, or Goemon's Great Adventure on PSX. There are similar games to those on PSX, but they're not really the same nor better than those N64 games. I guess if you need a ton of games to play through, then a PSX is a must, but otherwise, you need both.

Honestly this is not entirely wrong. If you're a normal kid who only gets max 2 games a year, sure the N64 library is small but there's still enough good games. The library becomes too small when you're an adult who can buy himself 6-8 games a year though

Well... you know what? I think you're right, maybe I shouldn't have phrased it with the word "every" as it isn't true, there really wasn't a PS1 Zelda, Star Fox or Mario Party, besides mediocre clones, and obviously PS1 didn't have Pokémon, which was a craze at the time, though I consider the N64 Pokémon titles to pale in comparison to the GB and GBC stuff at that time, anyways while there wasn't a proper F-Zero clone, PS1 was still probably the console to go for if you were into racing in general, due to Gran Turismo, Need for Speed and Ridge Racer all being there, also while GoldenEye is a classic, PS1 had its fair share of good 1st person shooters.

I think the main issue with N64 against the PS1 is that, besides the classic Nintendo IPs that were always superb, 3rd party support felt 10x weaker than on PS1, most likely due to the use of cartridges, which I prefer actually, so regardless of what your favorite genres were, you'd usually have a ton more options to experience on PS1 than on N64, where you'd get Nintendo's own offers, which were usually excellent, but then that'd be it, while on PS1 you'd have option after option to rent and try out, N64 usually got the short end of the stick on multiplatform titles too, again probably due to developers getting lazy with the cartridge limitations.

Anyways, both is the best option, if you're a major Nintendo fan and really wants their IPs then you go for N64, but if you're an average video game fan in general, PS1's most likely to have more options for your favorite genres. Still, it was a terrific generation and its a shame to see it often get tossed aside as "not aging well" or something... just a shame SEGA dropped the ball on the Saturn's US support, could've been an even more awesome generation here in the west if all 3 had a proper fight instead of what we got.
