Going this week, not sure what to expect. Is it worth it? Any tips on how to navigate?

>> No.10200637

Is a tourist trap for "collectors" that follow what YouTube tells them, go to any hard off and you will get way better deals, though if you want something specific just go to super potato or gamers.

>> No.10200651

Tourist trap like any tourist site, local craigslist will have better deals

>> No.10200669

>>10200575
No. Try Kansai region instead. Found a ton of stuff over the years in Kobe, Kyoto and Osaka.

>> No.10200720

>>10200575
no idea but I know they have arcades and stuff to play there, probably not going to see a large price difference between that and elsewhere.
but for general collecting? definitely not ideal

>> No.10200726

>>10200575
it's absolutely worth seeing. Especially if you have a few drinks and visit any of the arcades that have retro floors. For shopping, yeah can be a bit pricey but an unbeatable selection of options arguably anywhere in the world.

>> No.10200731

>>10200726
actually maybe not the best selection unless you speak Japanese. There's some english games around though. Still super fun place to visit idgaf

I am jealous. It has been years since I've last gone, and I remember when that was a Sega arcade which I would imagine tough for me to see it no longer holding onto the name. Long ago it used to be a very cool place to be, but the deals are further out from the city proper. Youtube has been flooding my feed full of these game shopping in Akiba videos, and with the favorable exchange rate with USD to JPY now I really wish I could enjoy $1 games again: https://youtu.be/dF17qPpjDds but work has gotten so demanding for so few dollars now coupled with inflation that makes a trip there no longer feasible. Enjoy your time there as there's so much more than just games.

its not very good anymore imo, online buyers have kind of killed japan as a place to score deals. dont sleep on checking out the big bookoffs though

based, i also bought extreme power for 100yen or something like 10 years ago

>> No.10201493

It's worth seeing and you can still find good deals in the small dingy stores. Super potato is fun to walk through but overpriced. Nakano Broadway is a fun side trip as well.

>> No.10201504

>>10200575
its interesting to see at least; Not the mecca it once was, but pretty neat

>> No.10201764

Great for playing at arcades and seeing cool stuff, bad for buying things unless it’s something rare af that you’ll only find there

>> No.10201781

>>10200575
You can go anywhere for retro shopping really. There's tons of places. If you're dead set on Akiba then be sure to visit Super Potato.

On the contrary, Mercari has made it easier and cheaper than ever to buy retro games and consoles.

But of course you do, sweaty. That's why you have no experience in Japan and ignore well known problems while shilling weeb Meca as "the best city on earth". Tokyo rarely ranks #1 on any list of best cities for anything.
You don't see and understand the world by reading/watching shit about one place you're obsessed with, or even going there. You do it by actually traveling all over the world, getting out there, experiencing it for yourself. You've obviously never done that. Anyone who has would never say shit like "hurr durr teh best city evar!"

I didn't not find it, just delayed things by an hour by traversing the loop I made counterclockwise instead of clockwise.

Spent a month there in 91, weirdly *not* intending to go game shopping (for myself, just for friends.) Was just interested in music, and thought I had money for maybe a dozen CDs. Used shops I had no knowledge of.
Instead I returned home with a used MD in the box that could've passed for new with at least a dozen games, and a pile of CDs

This was 3 decades ago, I'm pretty sure I picked up these games while there:
Megapanel
Volfied
New Zealand Story
Valis III
Kujakuo 2
Mamono Hunter Yoko
Cuty Suzuki Ringside Angel
Star Cruiser
Quackshot

I might have bought some of these there, or they were pick ups for friends. Or I bought them soon after returning home, so it registers in that era of memory.
Sonic
Shikinjoh
AirBuster
Whip Rush
Arrow Flash
Forgotten Worlds
Truxton
Darius II

Random memory. I'm pretty sure I saw an MD Tetris in the case while there, and not the common bootleg with Chinese titling. But it was 7000 yen, so a pass for me. I did see a lot of Rambo/Tetris multicarts for 3000yen, but passed on those too.

That's not fucking true, there absolutely were video game stores and arcades, it just wasn't a tourist trap aimed at otaku yet. If anything, the 90's was the untouched Golden Age of Akihabara. This pic is from an Akiba game store around late-1995/early-96.

I will never understand why people would travel for stuff when everything is available online. in any city in any decent country you will have access to 100% of what you can ever want. even in countryside now that there's companies that can deliver.
traveling is like going to a museum, it's just to attempt to stimulate your physical senses, and you can live great things already where you live.

Everything was so cheap, plenty of stock because nobody cared. I purchased a SF2Turbo CPS1 PCB for 6500 fucking yen at MAK Japan back in 2008.
