Legitimately some of the worst controlling racing games ever made.

Absolutely, yes. They're antigravity machines rather than cars though, so you have to control them like you would a plane.

Yes they're still great with the second game probably still being my favourite.

Check out Wipeout Phantom Edition the enhanced PC source port for the original Wipeout

Also BallisticNG a a pretty good Wipeout clone on Steam

I don't get the "hit wall slow down" meme with WipeOut 1, if you're colliding with the perimeter that much then learn the course.

I'm thinking of filtering this phrase. If you ever use it, it tells us that you're not interested in retro games at all, you just want some clout by trying the classics but you're not going to play them with an honest mindset. Then you go to >>>/v/ and complain about how dated these games are because you refuse to approach them in their own terms.

No, they don't hold up, stay away from them, play the newest Gran Turismo or something, leave us alone.

Great, stylish af, great music and controls, one thing though.
First Wipeouts and Ridge/Rage racers do not support analog controller however, they do support NeGcon.

To get analog controls in those games, in emulator select controller type NeGcon and bind analog sticks of a controller you are using to analog buttons of the NeGcon and enjoy early Ridge Racers and Wipeouts with analog input.
Works even better with TOCA and GT2 which by default set up very large deadzones on analog input but NeGcon does not have this issue for some reason, plus you can select your own deadzone which is not something that you could do with analog controller.

64 is underrated IMO. The physics are slightly different than 2097. In 64 it feels more like the ships are skimming the air. You don't carve as "deep" into the corners with airbrakes, and it's a cool fast feeling. It's also very challenging in single-player unlike XL/2097. In 64 you have to be elite and have a couple perfect laps to get a measly 3rd place. Visually I think it's pretty good too, except that ugly jungle track, the one that's a redone version of Gare d'Europa.

XL and 3 are excellent games that definitely hold up and are fun to play to this day. 3 however has a very high learning curve and requires a fair bit of practice to get right. Wipeout 1 feels quite dated and clunky in comparison.

Wipeout is still incredible. I'm partial to 3, but it seems like people are all over the place with their opinions. The aesthetic in 3 is just so good and the sound track is nuts. X-pander by Sasha is too fucking killer. Playing this currently on a CRT, can't get enough.

Is there any information on source ports of the next games? Got into this series with this port of 1 and it's so good, I dont mind waiting for ports of the rest especially if I can put my own music in those too

>> No.10202441

>>10201909
Airbrakes push the back of your craft away from the side that you're activating. Imagine you're trying to go straight, and someone walks up from the side and starts pushing on your ship near the back. It changes your trajectory by swinging the rear, as opposed to regular steering which points the nose. You can use them for tighter turns, to make small adjustments, and also to swing/drift around corners with the right ships. But you gotta experiment with the physics and feel it out until it's second nature. Just remember that airbrakes slow you down, so also try laps where you don't use them much at all.

>> No.10202619

>>10202441
You don't have to use them all the time, simply stepping off the gas helps too.

>> No.10203381

>>10201928
I feel the same way anon. I've been playing for a couple years now and got hooked. 3 is my favorite as well because I like how clean and consistent it looks, but I am slowly converting to 2097 because the style is wild to the point of being almost psychedelic. Lots of colorful stripes and patterns.

Use the opposite airbrake on corner exit to correct

>> No.10203435

>>10201909
Not related to airbrakes but here are two things that helped me: 1) I was cranking too hard on the analogue sticks (I use a 360 pad) and kept pitching my nose up and down accidentally, which wasn't visually obvious to me and was affecting my turning, and 2) when getting a feel for the physics, it helped to let go off the gas after going over bumps and just pay attention to how the ship bobs.

>2097 Qirex
My favorite ship as well. I also like Qirex in 3, but it doesn't feel quite the same, and doesn't look as cool. It's cool but a different kind of cool.
